I would really love to see reading water as part of every "on the water" video you put out. If it does take experience (which makes perfect sense), then it will take thousands of videos over years of constantly sharing specific examples of what you see that makes you make specific decisions. Please!

I learned in grade school I am dyslexic, I think I must be when it comes to reading water too. Heard bluegill lipsmacking lilypads, tons of perch around and saw bass boil and still couldn't get a bite walking and popping a frog, punching, senko, buzzbait, and a chatterbait. Great topic Randy. I'd love to hear more on it from you!

Tough topic to talk through as you indicate with so many variables, clarity, temperature, wind, oxygen levels and the corresponding topic of structure, such as points, channels, brush, pads, lay downs etc…. and I’ve found what makes for high potential fishing may be different from lake to lake. I believe it’s more of a learned skill through experience rather than a taught skill. Having said that, it’s immensely helpful to learn from masters like yourself, particularly in understanding what we are experiencing when analyzing the overall fishing conditions. Sometimes we don’t know what we don’t know! Conditions may seem perfect but still not catching fish because some important variables haven’t lined up. Great video Randy!

Great video, it may not be the answer that is wanted for the “quick fixers”, but it is reality. As a serious recreational fisherman, I don’t put the fish on the boat as others, and with only 2 years of experience on the water with 2 on the bank…. I do know I have so much to learn yet. By this information shared, it gives me key words of what I need to look for while trying to learn. Failure still is learning. 😎

Great video Randy, I feel many of us would love to see more of this! I do have a request, I fished a lot with my Dad when I was still in high school and caught quite a few fish BUT I really didn’t know what I was doing, now at 56 years old I’ve started kayak bass fishing. Could you do a video on Rod, Reel, and Line combinations for a new bass angler, that’s looking to carry 5 or 6 rods. Obviously in the kayak we can’t carry a almost unlimited amount of rods, also many people just learning, that may have a small Bass Tracker type boat, are not going to have 20 or 30 rods.

So true about difference between locating and catching bass...90% of YT content is on baits/catching bass because 90%+ of interest by viewers is in that. "What are they biting on?" is the question I always hear. I'd much rather know "what kind of pattern are they locating on?" I struggle far more with locating fish on big bodies of water and thus would much rather watch that kind of YT content...that's why guys like you, Jonny, Matt Stefan are so much more valuable than YT channels that are just bait commercials.

Love these styles of videos I’m a jig maker and I own a jig company, so naturally I fish jigs probably 80% of the time I’m fishing between arky head football heads swim jigs and brush jigs I fish them all the time I’m a 19 year old guy with probably 200 hours on a jig, but I love videos like these where pros talk about breaking down water reading conditions and water clarity because that’s how you really go from catching a 2 or 3 fish a day to catching 5 to 10 (I live in CT for reference) to me it’s all about learning bass behavior and I’m kind of a nerd about it but I just wanted to say thank you for the content it’s helps a lot of people learn more advanced strategies in the sport and opens my eyes to things I never thought of before.

Thanks Randy. That is a tough subject for sure. Season is another variable in hard bottom pre spawn, shad present fall, deeper water access winter, shade summer. Just to name a few. Activity level of a area, birds present, it never ends. I think it becomes a 6 sense after years of fishing.

Randy I know you moved to the Skeeter ZXR ( and it is on my list of boats I would love to buy). $$ is a huge issue so I am looking at aluminum19-20 ft. When you ran the tin boat last year, what disadvantages did you have other than speed? I am looking at the Xpress X19 mainly and not too interested in the RT or others. If I can make the 2022 ZXR20 work that is my first choice but I doubt it will work. I just fish local tournaments and fun fish. Another reason I am interested in a tin is the very shallow water I can get to better but the main thought is once in a while to fish the intercoastal waterway here in NC once in a while. I appreciate your advice.

Trolling works for me. See it all, while fishing. Finds active fish, then concentrate on them with other tactics. Everyone fishes shallow. Find fish that don't see many lures. Deeper water the better, even if the fish are shallow in it. Deep water cover is clarity differences, and thermoclines, and wind currents. Do not do what anyone else is doing. You can find much larger untouched bass.

This is the ultimate question for sure, but it’s all about understanding habitat and the food chain... call me whatever you want, but don’t call me late for dinner. Sure structure, weather , water visibility are important , but food and bio diversity are key, I once heard Rick Clunn day “ if you want to know the owl study the mouse”.

I would say the easiest way to find bass is to locate vegetation or bank grass. Simple as that. The lake I'm by has one tributary with gator grass and thats about the only area you can get mainlake bites. Or fish the dam which usually has some smallies on it or LMB. Other than that pick up a spinnerbait and cover different areas

I’ve been fishing a long time and I think it sometimes works against me, focusing on what’s worked in the past. They were here two days ago, they must still be here, right? Uh, no. I often fish alone and when fishing’s tough I talk to myself. The most common thing I say is “why am I fishing where there are no fish?”

@@jaydoman7540 I think I sort of understand what you're trying to say. Do you mean that you have to spend time just pulling up to a spot and trying to get bit on whatever you think might work based on the conditions? Surely you need a gameplan on what you're going to throw, how you're going to throw it, and how long until you try something different? What in your opinion are the most important variables to focus on?

I have learn that if you want to learn water get out on the lake every chance you get. Do not have a favorite place. Here in northern Mi, where most of are water is pretty clear I will get out on a calm day on drive. I take no rods I just drive. Hubbard Lake on a calm day you can see apppox 10ft deep. I idle my motor on steer with my trolling motor. I went from 2-3 places to about a dozen so. But it takes a lot of time to do this. It took me a dozen trips and about 2-3 years to REALLY do my homework. Its not easy to get calm conditions!
