How to befriend an ork in three simple steps: Step 1. Get into a knock-down drag-out brawl with the ork. Step 2. Win, or at least give your opponent a serious challenge and don’t die. Step 3. Say “that was fun, let’s do this again sometime.” The ork will laugh, say something along the lines of “yer alroight, ‘umie,” and is now your best friend. The better your performance in combat, the more likely your chances of pulling this off. Be aware, the ork will expect you to brawl again repeatedly whenever you meet, and will be very offended if you try to refuse.

Eldar are too prideful, Dark eldar are too (also will flay the tau for shits and giggles), Orks will fight everyone for fun and to eat them and their own dead and grots after, Tyranids will eat everyone and everything, necrons want to kill everything in the galaxy and the old ones are dead space toads. All the other xenos? Horrible monstrosities. Everything remotely cute and cuddly either died during the war in heaven or during the age of strife.

It would be scary if Tau would be able to actually "figure out" the orks. Why? Blood Axes. Imperium and Eldar never consider long term utility of ork mercenaries. Tau have a whole Caste dedicated to researching diplomacy, (maybe) 20% of their population. All they need to do is point orks in direction of biggest fight/juiciest loot and at the same time pretend to be weak pacifists not worth fighting to dissuade orks from betraying them. Ork would never hit a pacifist, what if it's infectious? Shooting a pacifist on the other hand...

It technically works on paper, but in practice Orks fight themselves as much as they do the enemy so they'd have no qualms about beating up their allies unless sufficiently bribed. Sadly our favourite murdershrooms are too much of a wildcard in the long run to make proper allies.
