Ive used this lock so much! Great video! I like to catch it right when they start to wrap ashi. I keep my hand pinned against the outside of my thigh when I see them going for it and they usually throw their ankle right over my hand. Then i can use that hand to push their leg inside and down further into a reap, that’s when lock it up. Hope you’re doing well coach Patrick!

Resting your hand on your own thigh sounds like a great set up. Can see how that would work. Def gonna try that 🤓 thanks Mickey, hope you’re good too!

Is this really a coubter cause he still has the lock on you as well, how do you escape?

Yeah you just gotta make sure to have a strong boot (leg extended and dorsi flexion) to survive the attack on you heel or Achilles. Regardless I personally privilege a defend and escape strategy rather than countering. So this counter is just one option to try out and have in the chamber for certain situations 🤙

Is that legal on white belt?

Depends on the tournament/gym rules. But generally the straight ankle is WB legal, but the toe hold is not.

Long answer: If you do this in the IBJJF ruleset when reaping is not allowed, the ref will almost definitely DQ (or warn) you for reaping yourself. As stupid as it is, you are generally going to be pulling your opponent's foot across your own centerline when you do this... which means he is now reaping you, but you forced him to do it, which is illegal. If you want to see this happen, Nick Schrock vs Leandro Lo at the 2018 World Championships ended exactly like this. Short answer: no

Interesting. I did this (blue belt) in training from belly down position. I cleared his foot off the hip and hopped over, then he went belly down. After copping it for a bit I took this grip on his foot and got the tap. Was wondering if it was legal. I don't really think I forced a reap in that situation. So maybe it's fine.
