We had to sell this phone at any cost, like give some gifts with the phone, etc. The battery life was bad, the underscreen fingerprint sensor was worse, but the cameras we're really good if you knew how to use them. But even with the luxury feel of the phone, it was just bad. Good ideas, REALLY bad execution.

Problem is: HMD *clearly* hasn't looked at the landscape, hence their phones representing their history of making poor decisions. Currently, in the midrange sector, what do people of said demographic want? • Properly optimized OS w seamless integration of features. • Visually appealing and intuitive UI design. • Decent and well maintained performance. • Great battery life. • Decent and consistent camera performance. • Comfortable build. • Proper future support. Brands who make phones in the midrange category typically don't nail all of the aforementioned. Why? It's not because of "lacking budget," as many would believe. It's actually this range that many buy from. So there is a strong incentive for manufacturers to keep making phones of this range, as evedent in the mass of this range. It's because nobody bothers to... Like... really. Nobody bothers to make something that's 'perfect' for this sort of price range. Except for Nothing, who does try to do something. Samsung's clunky and unoptimized Android skin bogs down their already subpar hardware. Xiaomi and Oppo's top-end quality consistency doesn't trickle down to this range either. Techno and Infinix are niche devices with little support. Like, if HMD dedicated 2 years into refining the hell out of one product instead of just running around like a headless chicken, then maybe they could make a comeback. Not to mention, Windows Mobile's UI has a *VERY* distinctive and appealing design that many have fallen for, yet they didn't bother to pick that up? When what HMD needed was an *'IDENTITY?'*
@aquaponieee4 күн бұрын
HMD Global IS the same smartphone division as Microsoft Mobile and Nokia Mobile. After Microsoft left the smartphone industry, they sold the division and patents back to Nokia, and Nokia separated it into a separate company they licensed the brands and patents to because they were not interested in the smartphone industry either. HMD Global had to scale back operations by moving manufacturing to China and laying off a lot of divisions, but they still are a Finnish company made out of former Nokia employees that was once Nokia Mobile. This year, the brand licensing deal expired, Nokia Networks sold some of their parents to HMD and left the smartphone industry for good this time. HMD owns a whole bunch of Nokia/Microsoft Mobile patents, which they finally used on the HMD Skyline.

I still have mine. It can take fantastic pictures, problem is it only takes fantastic pictures about 8 out of 10 times. Outside in a bright day is what it’s best at. And for some reason it’s great at car museums when cars are underneath LED lights, the paint comes up really well. Camera app also crashes when it drops below 50% battery. And the processing drains the battery from 100% quickly. Also even though 5 cameras fire at once, night pictures are surprising bad. One thing it is good for is black and white pictures though.

And the same here with this Nokia, I liked how organic they looked, I like to see pictures how my eyes see them, I don't want shadows to be lifted, highlights and sunshines erased for food, not to mention the horrible sharpening OEMs have forced on us.

But in that time the Nokia 9 raw were maybe the best ones. The JPG engine wasn't great if you were looking for banger instagrameable images, as nearly any camera except Fuji and some old DSLRs. Could you try editing the raw images and compare with phones of the same time? It would be interesting.

Snapdragon 845 couldn't handle it and so they worked closely with qualcom to develop a solution to make it work, It delayed the launch that early snapdragon 855 phones were available by then . As an owner of this phone, I liked the camera for what it was...a concept phone. However, there were some issues there. Fingerprint scanner was trash. Battery replacement would damage the either the display cable or the fingerprint scanner - making it poor design. Lack of software support for the camera. I still boot mine up periodically and really like the design, screen, size and the cameras. It was on overhyped concept phone masquerading as a flagship...that was my biggest issue with it. I won't sell mine though.

I'd love to see a modern approach of this idea with newer ISP's and camera software, faster processors and storage and the small sensors for the current smartphone generation. At the time was said the monochrome sensors could capture much more light than a conventional RGB, I would love to see modern smartphones using this technology to improve low light performance since that now it's super common to use more than one sensor to capture pictures in our smartphones.

To me these images look pretty sharp, with good balance of saturation and exposition. Yes, colors don't pop, but that's generally a sign of a good camera, since in real life colors don't pop. That being said, it's generally not possible to judge a photo without seeing the original scenery for oneself. And to judge a camera like this it's better to provide a comparison. Show the same shot from an iPhone 16 Pro, and from some modern chinese phone, like Vivo X100 Ultra, perhaps then I could see how bad the camera is for myself.

By this point, Huawei was on its third generation of computational twinning. It was a bit comical on the p9, it just made darker areas look a little more gritty, but by the p20, the mono color blending was completely transparent. Seemed to matter more on the P20 than the P20 Pro, and in some conditions, the P20's more closely matched twin system gave better output, but Huawei dropped the mono for the P30 and simply chased bigger sensors and mult stacking because customers wanted that extra ultrawide more than a mono camera. Pity. Those tiny 1!2.9" monos Huawei used are still better at resolving detail than many main cameras today.

They only provide security updates that too quarterly. Till 2020 Nokia was number 1 after Google in terms of providing fastest android updates as per counterpoint research. HMD really went downhill after Juho Sarvikas left and joined Qualcomm. Most of the key people from HMD left and joined Apple. The HMD India Head is now the Head of Apple India. My Microsoft Lumia 950XL produces images (in good lighting) that are comparable to my Samsung S22 Ultra (which I turn off all enhancements), since I feel that the PUREVIEW system is more natural processing and not over-processing as Samsung does.
