You are very fortunate to be able to do this kind of activity and to produce a wonderful film. I am sorry you painted such a grim picture of the Great Glen Canoe Trail. I think it's inspiring for a lot of people out there, at least for the beginners like me. By going to places in the high North is wonderful, but it may also put people in harms way through lack of experience, by them thinking its easy to do this. But, a really negative part of making such a lovely video like this, Is that will also attract people who have absolutely zero respect for the environment, by leaving their crap (literally) laying about with their other trash in these pristine environments. they just don't understand the meaning of "leave no trace"

@Adventure-Outdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@grahamkyzer253 Cheers Graham, glad you enjoy the videos 👍. The drone is a DJI Phantom 3 Standard, I've had it for about 5 years now. It shoots in 2.7k but I've always just used 1080p. They can be picked up for around £150 second hand on eBay these days but they're huge compared to some of the new drones available at the moment. Hope that helps!

@Adventure-Outdoors3 жыл бұрын
@@grahamkyzer253 hi mate, the canoe is an Old Town Camper 16; a really nice canoe but they discontinued them a few years back as the factory that produced the light weight ‘Royalex’ plastic closed down. They rarely come up for sale in the 2nd hand market though. I’m not too familiar with alternatives to be honest but the UK company ‘Silver Birch’ seem to make some nice boats. 👍

Really inspirational stuff for those who haven't had the opportunity to explore Scotland by canoe. I've not paddled any section of the Great Glen Canoe Trail despite living in the area. I've always chosen the remoter regions of the Highlands. Perhaps it's because there's too much infrastructure that distracts one from experiencing a remote canoe trip. As for Assynt/Inverpolly in the NW; I find the treeless landscape too desolate for my liking , although stunning on a gorgeous sunny still day. I generally feel great sadness when traversing through Scotland's wet deserts, but do have a glimmer of hope that one day the lost Caledonian Forests & wetlands will once again return. Sadly it won't happen in my lifetime. Anyway, on a positive note, there are still stunning locations to explore in Scotland. Loving your work, and keep it coming. cheers, Fred
@Adventure-Outdoors3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Fred! I agree with you about Assynt and the North West, the desolate landscape doesn’t hold much appeal. I can imagine the area would’ve once looked like the Sarek region of northern Sweden. I’m currently canoe camping on Loch Tay and the wooded shoreline is much more interesting to paddle along. All the best, Ben.

I hadn't heard of canoe barrels, thanks for that one! Beautiful camera work
@Adventure-Outdoors3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I think they're storage barrels for oil and stuff like that really, but they're pretty handy for canoeing. I also think that they would add extra buoyancy in the unlikely event of a capsize!
@kenhutson37443 жыл бұрын
@@Adventure-Outdoors what made you opt for the barrels rather than dry bags? What are the pros/cons? To my inexperienced mind they just seem bulky and more difficult to portage.
@Adventure-Outdoors3 жыл бұрын
They're definitely bulky and difficult to portage, although I've ordered some carrying harnesses for them. I think the major advantage is that you have ready made tables around camp and you can be 100% sure your gear will stay dry come what may. The downside I found is that they're difficult to pack due to the shape, all the 'soft' gear goes in fine like sleeping bags, mats etc. but I had my cooking gear in one of the 60L barrels and was left with about 30L of air in there in between everything. I'll stick with them for a while, see how it goes 👍

Hi Ben. Such inspirational footage of what looked like a breath taking two weeks. I follow all of your adventures and I've I love every one of them. I have a couple of questions. Awesome trip and video Ben, inspiring. Can I ask if you have any recommendations on gumboots? Looks like you lived in them for the trip rather than wetboots and camp shoes.

Cheers Dave, it was a great trip! I was wearing a £10 pair of Dunlop wellies that I’ve had for years. They aren’t very comfortable and started to leak during the trip so I’m also on the look out for something else. I’ve been looking at ‘Muck Boots’, they’re a bit pricey but might be better for the winter months I reckon. Atb, Ben.

Just love your videos mate Knowing the adventures you had before COVID the lock down must have been killing you both ! But what a way to come out , must be up there as one of your best , the filming was great the location was epic . What make drone do you use ? Do you worry about leaving your truck ? Are the parking ares secure or do you let someone know and ask them to keep an eye on it for you ? Oh and you and your kit !!!! you must have a lockup some where now you have more kit than Go Outdoors 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
@Adventure-Outdoors3 жыл бұрын
Cheers David! Yeah the lockdown was tough and it was really good to get away for a couple of weeks again. The drone is an old DJI phantom 3 standard; pretty old technology these days and it's huge compared to the new ones. I just park the truck up and leave it, usually in a carpark or just by the side of the road. I do worry about it but there's very little car crime up that way compared to what you might find in the cities. I spoke to the gamekeeper up at Loch Veyatie and he noticed the truck had been there for days but said it was normal as loads of folk head out into the hills for days on end. Aye I've got way too much outdoor gear, I don't like to sell stuff I just hang on to it just in case 😂👍.

That looked like a really nice trip , beautiful scenery. I was wondering , how does that canoe cover attach to the sides of the canoe ? Did you fish yourself on that trip ?
@Adventure-Outdoors3 жыл бұрын
Yeah it was great! To fit the cover you have to drill a number of holes and then fit a patch with a loop, the loop goes through the hole and the patch gets glued on the inside. Then it's just a case of tying the deck on through the loops. I didn't fish as it's fly fishing only in the Assynt area and I haven't got a fly rod. I'm getting one though and we're going back in September to catch the end of the fishing season 👍.
