I suddenly have a question and I can’t find any answer on the internet: How does the frill gene pass on to the offspring? I live in a country without most canary breeds and no show so I am just pairing what I have. I have one frilled and one normal, both not recognized as any breed, their chicks look like they have a very small curvature frill but I don’t really know. If I get to know how the frill gene works I may figure out the offspring feather features more clearly.

The north dutch frills certainly are an interesting breed of canary, I've just got into breeding fife canaries but further down the track if i'm confident enough I wouldn't mind branching out into something like this. I'd love to get into breeding red factors too because over here in Aus you can sell them for $60-$80 each

Which breed of canary has the best song or does it vary? I love how my dad's canary sings in the morning

I've kept quite a few different breeds and there isn't much to choose between them. IMHO the best ones were the early small red factors in the 70s that probably still had a touch of red siskin in them, but UK breeders tend to like their birds on the very large side of big, so Norwich was bred into them and the song changed dramatically. Worst singers were Lizards. Very high pitched with not a lot of variety. I now keep Rollers and Irish Fancy in separate sheds and very few people appreciate the Roller song. They are not free singing birds and sing a monotonous repertoire at very low volume. Definitely a Marmite variety. In short I would try to find out what variety your dad has and go for that breed, if you know what it is.

@@johnwalker3252 He just got it from a pet shop so it's a little tricky because the label probably just said canary £29.99. However his bird is rung so maybe there's some database you can search. It's a slim little bird but it's song is long and changes. I might buy a hen and ask to breed him

If you're confident enough to catch the bird then try to get as much detail as you can from the ring. The colour of the ring can sometimes let you know what year the bird was born, although the year is usually also stamped somewhere on the ring. Look for the club initials on the ring. My Irish Fancies, have "IFIN" (Irish Fancy International) on them, and my roller canaries have "NC" (National Roller Canary Society) stamped on them. Some breeders also have "IOA" (International Ornithology Association) rings, in which case the breed may be impossible to tell. Breeders can also buy closed rings from people who make them commercially, personalised to their own requirements, and not associated with any particular club. Wish it was easier than that, but unfortunately it isn't. Another issue is that there are often several different clubs that cater for the same breed, and the stamps on those may be different between clubs, although the ring colour and the year should be the same in most cases.
