How far north can you ride in 24 hours?
Restrap ambassador Josh Reid takes on the challenge to see how far north he can ride from Restrap HQ by latitude. This is The North Race.
A balancing act between careful route planning and self sufficiency, Josh planned his route through the Yorkshire Dales, Cumbria, Edinburgh and beyond with the aim of getting close to Aberdeen. You can find his route here: www.komoot.com/tour/1521954200
-
We invite you to plan and execute a time-trial as far north (by latitude) as you can within 24 hours starting from the Restrap factory in Leeds. Balance marginal gains, comfort over distance, route-planning and minimal stop time to push yourself as far as possible within the timeframe.
This challenge is open to anyone, costs nothing to enter and the rules are simple.

I dunno ... some pretty stunning places in the North to inspire riders - usually verdant countryside bathed in peak Summer sun near a body of water of some kind. There's a reason The Lakes, Peaks and Dales are heaving with cyclists around that time!

It is surprisingly comfortable and the weight distribution sits high up on the back to prevent issues. Also the longer you use it.. the less food and water is in it ;)

Sounds like a good challenge, regardless of start point. With Leeds just under 400km from my house, my North race will pretty much end at your factory door. If i make it in 24 hours (brief Google check says 22 hours cycling), can i at least get a sticker? Extra context, I'm 54, overweight, and last years London to Brighton is the furthest I've ever ridden!

@@Restrapltd I'm trying to be green and cycle from my home in Somerset to the factory. Will get train home. Otherwise, I'll have to train/drive 400km to your factory, then cycle 400k north, then drive/ train 800k home again. Plus, I was only hoping on a sticker! 😜

Well … how unsupported a ride is, when it is filmed, hence accompanied by a crew in a car, is always difficult to answer, . Especially at night it makes a huge psycological difference. I wouldn't have written this comment, if he wouldn't have started to talk about how isolated you feel during the night - right after he had talked to the camera-man during a break. That is not "alone in the dark", sorry.

We expected at least one comment like yours don't worry. It was important to us to film his attempt as a source of inspiration and marketing for both our challenge and new product. It was still self supported and we won't be retracting Josh's insane effort in those 24 hours :)
@kstoeb
@kstoeb 25 күн бұрын
@@Restrapltd Thanks for your reaction, especially for its kindness. I wasn't content with my post, because it lacks nuances. (English is not my native language.) Another try, hopefully more differentiated: 1) The whole "motivation/marketing"-reasoning is completely obvious to me - and legitimate IMHO. And i am totally aware that I am a KZbin-watcher; so part of the ecosystem. 2) This is not a race, but a very nice idea of an endeavour. 3) What bothers me is more the exaggeration in the words, wich is so common in the outdoor-movie scene. Everything is a bikepacking adventure - even if they have obviously no baggage on their bikes, are acompanied by a crew-car and sleep in hotel (everything sponsored) … This is not the case in this movie! But you couldn't withstand the temptation to babble about "the loneliness of the night-ride" and the "complete darkness" when obviously there is a car driving behind the rider, with car-headlights brightening the street, and a camera-team the rider can talk to when ever he feels to. 4) All that said, I still hope it was "selfsupported" in the sense of "no help/clothes/food/water from the car, and no sitting in it during breaks"; and even if not, I am still in awe about his feat :-)
@Restrapltd
@Restrapltd 25 күн бұрын
@@kstoeb Hey don't worry about the language nuances, your comment is totally valid! :) The film might make it look like we just drove next to him the whole night but the bits we filmed are the only parts we saw him, the rest of the time Jack (Cinematographer), Jon (Driver) and me (Photographer) were driving along the route searching for potential good compositions for when he came past. We also had a sleep in the van in Innerleithen (where the timestamp shot was taken) and the next time we saw him was when he told us how cold he got. He was genuinely alone for most of it :) All of his kit was on him and his only resupply for food was the Gregg's in Edinburgh. Thanks for your comment! :)
