No Nick, then Earth being in space does not mean that nothing is north of the equator, that would be stupid. North and South are determined by the earths magnetic poles, and the equator is the imaginary line that is equidistant from both, so something 'north of the equator' is something that is closer to the earths northern magnetic pole than it is to the earths southern magnetic pole.

That's not correct. The earth is also rotating and can be oriented by its rotational axis; it goes trough the geographic north and south poles. The equator is defined by this measure, not the magnetic poles, which are actually variable. You can also differentiate between poles rotational direction. Still, symmetry apart, all that is arbitrary.

The actual answer is to signal first and then go for it only after the other driver sees you. If they try blocking you on purpose, they see you and will stop to avoid a collision if they can, and hell, some you'll even let you pass. If you don't signal, you can cause a serious accident if the other driver is distracted. Signaling while you turn, though, is the stupidest thing you can do: everyone that sees the signal can already see your fucking car turning, so what's the point? The whole reason for signaling is to warn other drivers that you'll do something unexpected so they have enough time to react. Seriously, use your signal or don't, but don't pretend that your fooling anybody, or worse yet, that you're not an irresponsible asshole, by signaling as you turn. I swear, it's like people that do this are completely acritical. "We were going to get mad at you for putting our lives at risk, but you pretend signaled while doing it. You rascal got us good. Good show." You imagine us saying as you pat yourself on the back... Literally worse than Hitler, you. I hope some asshole in a truck does this to you while your having a coughing fit or otherwise don't have enough time to react properly and you die in the wreck.

wolfspam Noo you got it all wrong if you let them know your intentions thats when they react by speeding up to stop you from changing lanes. However if you are clever you do what I do and indicate as you change lane and you just check that its safe first before merging its easy they dont need to react and it doesnt matter if they are distracted. Princess Harmony Moonlight my big problem is... why does it matter? Why does everyone feel like they have to get to their destination 0.5 seconds earlier than if they let someone through? Just let some people be assholes and get around to reduce the risk of accidents.

Yeah I agree it saves almost no time at all by pushing in front of a car going the same speed so if anyone indicates and I have the chance to speed up I slow down and let them in, cant believe how selfish some drivers are but really they are just putting their life more at risk every day and are likely to get fines

Yeah, I meant that if you're already doing that, there's no reason to signal anybody: YOU'RE ALREADY VISIBLY TURNING YOUR WHOLE, INFINITELY LARGER, GODDAMN CAR, WE CAN SEE THAT! THE FACT THAT A TINY LIGHT IS BLINKING DOESN'T HELP AT ALL. Also, it does matter if they're distracted because if startled a driver may swerve and cause an accident on a different lane or, at the very least, slow down, which causes the well known phenomenon of "phantom traffic"; that is when traffic is very slow on a stretch of road for no apparent reason and then is fast again, which is in fact a wave of bad traffic moving backwards through the normal traffic wave, usually caused by such inconsiderate drivers (look it up and help prevent it). Look, I live in a city known nationwide for its violent traffic and huge pedestrian death rate, I know how frustrating it is for people to interpret your signal as "please speed up and block me", but your way is no solution at all, you're just contributing to worse traffic. When a motherfucker speeds up towards you, you can force your way: he already sees you, he WILL slow down if possible. If he doesn't, and the next one is also an asshole, force a little more etc until you're let through or get through. In fact, by the rules of traffic, when you signal, you're not asking permission to turn, you're informing that you're about to do so and other drivers are required to slow down and let you pass. Of course that doesn't happen, so sometimes you gotta force the issue, but subterfuge is not a safe way of doing so. I have to do that every single day because my route involves a U turn (properly signaled with traffic lights) in a highway followed by immediately crossing 5 lanes of fast traffic and aggressive drivers so I can turn right in less than 100 meters (the U turn deposits me in the leftmost lane). It's not easy and usually a few assholes will honk or get mad at me, but that's what must be done. You signal and you go, slowly and safely, until you reach the other side. And to paraphrase RebelWinterwolf, there's no need to try to shave a few seconds of YOUR commute at the cost of, at very least, leaving a wake of bad traffic behind you. If you can't get in front of one guy, try the next, and the next until you're through. Sometimes you'll lose 30 seconds in a 15 minute commute. Is it worth adding that same 30 seconds to the commute of everyone in your literal wake though? PS: I wished that, "when its safe", it would quickly stop being safe by whatever reason (e.g. another asshole startling a driver down the road for extra poetic justice) and a distracted truck driver lacks the time to adjust to both everyone slowing down and a new car swerving into his lane. Maybe because he was tired, maybe because he sneezed that very second, there are always the possibility of an honest distraction.Of course that's just a sarcastic way to tell you how you can literally lose your life because you think you can disregard both every traffic engineer in the world and every single driver in your city. But how could I expect rainbow dash to actually think of other people, pick up on subtext or have self awareness...
