The early Northstars were nightmares, but the TTY nature of the head bolts are not the reason. The fine thread on them, in soft aluminum was. Soft alloys need coarse threaded bolts. This was solved in later engines. If you replace the bolts with coarse threaded studs, it's a heck of a fine motor.

They'll leak oil but the rest of the problems were normal wear and tear. The headbolt problem was 97-99 and could be mitigated with regular coolant flushes. The waterpump problem was caused by the tensioner wearing out usually by 80,000-90,000mi.The oil burning was cured in the 2000s when they mandated synthetic oil. Not a bad engine at all with regular maintenance. Them Northstars don't tolerate neglect so they're not good beater cars for college kids or anyone on a tight budget.

Update; I finally bought an LH2 version Northstar out of a Cadillac XLR, off eBay for $480. dollars total. Complete with everything, exhaust manifolds, motor mounts, all accessories, flexplate, underhood wire harness, ECM, ALL of it... They claimed it had 157k miles on it, but when I got done tearing it down, it was in practically perfect condition. Clean and well taken care of also. The only thing that happened was a main bearing bolt snapped off. So just as an experiment, I took the broken bolt, clamped it in a vice, and hit it with a 7/64 drill bit, and the drill bit cut it just like it was nothing, probably because it's only a grade 9.8. So I'll be able to drill it out no problem. And just as a note, all the head bolt threads were perfectly fine also.

I bought my 2007 DTS new. About 7 years in. The power steering pump locked up with no warnings. 2 1/2 years ago the transmission fluid line came loose at radiator. The lower one. GM's brilliant connector clip rusted out. Fluid went everywhere. 2-3 weeks later the alternator went out. Of course the tranny fluid flush haha caused that. Yes it leaks oil. I was doing 800 miles per quart. The miles are less after I did an oil change. Yet it still starts and goes with 280,000 miles. Just last week an ignition coil went bad. Of course it was on the rear bank by the firewall. YUK. Found another for $10. It was hard to find in my area.

@gabevee33 ай бұрын
Wow. I only had two Caddys with the N*. The first was a 1996. Its gasket blew. Before that I had to change the pump once, and the radiator. I suspect that because of those two things where I had the temp go up it exacerbated the issue, plus I used the green stuff, and since a couple of the head bolts were exposed to the coolant, the chemical reaction caused rust and bolts loosened. The second, a 2004. It's been ruining beautifully, and I have never had any of the other issues mentioned. It does consume oil about a quart every 3-4 weeks if I drive a lot (though of late only drive once a month or so I go 700-800 miles highway to visit my mom) , but it is a hi-output, high cylinder compression engine. It happens. I do have a tiny coolant leak somewhere but it's negligible and I make sure to keep the overflow tank topped off with only ever Dexcool. But no other leaks to speak of. And I don't floor it or drive much over 60 MPH like many do. It's too bad they didn't address those issues until after 2000 because tin spite of the advertised specs, I get better than 25 MPG on the highway.
@CMAG33 Жыл бұрын
This was by far not gms first Dual overhead cam engine. Chevy had the LT5 v8 in the c4 vette long before the Northstar. A lot of people don't realize it but overhead cam is nothing new. Overhead cam engines came before pushrod car engines in most manufacturers. Chevys had overhead cams in the 1920's. That's also not how the torque to yield bolts fail. The bolts are fine if you want to check the stretch on the used ones they will still be in spec. The head bolts on the Northstar fail because the aluminum used was too soft and the expansion of the block and heads pull on the bolts and then contraction they push on the bolt threads until they start stripping threads. That's the reason you'll find helicoils in a lot of the head bolt holes. It's not the bolts it's the threads. Check the threads on the bolts when you pull them and you'll see the aluminum that's been pulled from the threads in the block all over the bolt. It literally pulls the threads right out of the block until it can't keep enough pressure on the head gasket.

@@jjshebanow the Lt5 was designed with lotus not only by lotus. It was a joint design so still chevrolet like I said. Your right about mercury marine and from what I understand chevrolet used them because mercury was more conistant with producing aluminum blocks, heads, ect with less core shift as chevy didn't have much experience with in house aluminum blocks and heads at the time and instead chose to have them done by mercury because it was cheaper. A very cool engine no matter who made it or why and it's a shame more people don't know about them.

Yeah that engine has a few design flaws but since a lot of people are not looking at them, first, we can say that GM made the coyote before the coyote was a thing.... And you can now buy yourself a 32 valve Northstar for way cheaper than a coyote and the design will take 1,000 horsepower. Not a problem. It's literally if a LS engine and a k20 engine made a baby And maybe they were cousins lolll like the full crank galley is just amazing. You can push so much boost on that crank, to 52 teeth reluctor you can tune it with any GM ECU. Yes they do have a head bolt design issue. There's some really good kits out there. Just do that and you got yourself an amazing engine for way cheaper than a coyote able of just as much and it'll fit straight on a 6l80e or a standard 6-speed. In my opinion, if you have to build an engine to put into something and you wonder what I think that's a great contender to a lot of supercar engines, if there's someone that can manage to slap a flat plane crank and that thing it would sound amazing!

It is not raspy like an exhaust leak. it isn't anything like what I have heard out of lifters, but is very steady with the engine RPM. Some seem to think it could be the oil pump starting to go bad, or the timing gear. My thought went to timing as it sounds a lot like the issues the Pontiac 2.5L vtech engine had with the plastic timing gear. Since beginning to drive for her I have been keeping an eye on it like I would my own personal vehicle. That's not bad for an engine weighing 300 lb more or less. And if you twin turbo it, you can get probably 600 horse & 600 torque at the crank. WOW......a whole lot of smoke you're blowing up you're viewers tailpipes. First: Torque To Yield cylinder head bolts have been INDUSTRY STANDARD since before I started turning wrenches proffesiinaly in 2001. Their metallurgy fatigue is not the cause of blown head gaskets. The bolts perform as designed. The root cause is lack of maintenance! The cooling system was overlooked. Ethylene glycol based coolant has a service life of 3yr/36k miles. The propylene glycol based Dex-cool has a longer life of 5yr/75k miles. When left to breakdown and deteriorate the coolant hoses from the inside out....a laundry list of components can and will fail. However the most dangerous is the electrolysis that occurs from the charged coolant in the system. Electrons are transfered back and forth from the aluminum to the coolant mixture(all the metal of the car maintains a negative charged as it is grounded). The fight for more negatively charged leaves voids in the aluminum in high stress areas surrounded by the coolant. Namely the head bolt threads near the bottom of the water jackets..... The weak aluminum looses its grip on the threads of the bolts and you have excessive lift of the cylinder head around that bolt hole at the deck surface. THE BOLT DOES NOT FAIL DUMMY! With the cam cover removed, a good known and calibrated torque wrench set to 50lb/ft, and a 10mm extended length 3/8 drive Snap-On socket.....attempt to tighten the head bolts in sequence of the suspected head. One or more will spin. If you had any experience, or sense to not speak in ignorance, you'd see the aluminum threads on the bolt when removed. TIK TOK....SMH SECOND: Oil leaks.....😂😂😂😂😂 clown! The valve cover gaskets don't leak! "Cracks" if any.....are inflicted. The rear main seal has a 5% chance of failure. The lower crankcase is where the oil leaks occur. Mainly the anaerobic sealant used to seal the main bearing cap bed plate dries and cracks, and THAT IS WHERE THE NORTHSTAR LEAKS OIL FROM! FINALLY(because I can't stand to listen to anymore wrong information) OIL Comsuption: The Northstar came in a "Y" and "9" version. Both over 10:1 compression, both high output, but one higher than the other. The engine design was ahead of its time alright. Premium fuel was required. Used....nah! The ECM detected knock and therefore retarded ignition timing to keep the engine safe. The target demographic was not ready for a high performance, high maintenance, performer like the NORTHSTAR. Cadillac over shot that by about 10 years too soon. 98% of the clientele at Ken Batchelor Cadillac in 2002 was over the age of 70, accumulated less than 7k miles per year on their luxury sedans, and very seldom got the engine to operating temperature in a single drive cycle. What that lead to was excessive carbon build-up on the 2nd and oil control rings. A service set of rings was experimental, and used a 2nd Napier oil scraper ring as the only difference in an attempt to decrease oil consumption. Passing along false information like your video is what's wrong with America. Shame. The NORTHSTAR is an amazing engine. Much more amazing than that 2 cent 🧠 of yours.
