How To Set Cam Shaft Timing on a Northstar V8

Setting cam shaft timing on a 1997 Northstar V8. This applies basically to all Northstars, with minor differences through the years.

It’s a Christmas in July to have a upload from the Northstar Master 😂🎉 thanks for the video! I noticed when doing my engine, the engine came out of a 98 Deville but might’ve been newer since it was a dealer replacement for the previous vehicle owners. I didn’t remove the cam sprockets to throw the chains on, would’ve been way easier. Also my cams wanted to spring to their neutral positions bad! But I have flat tappets also next time I’ll have that special holder tools or make my own. I wanna build another Northstar now

Thanks for sharing! I own a northstar 2005 Cadillac Deville! I bought it recently it been rebuilt,engine, struts, water , radiator, ect ! I glad I learn a lot about these engines and transmission!!! I bought the car and there is no other ride ! On this USA highway that so nic😢👍💲 a room 6 people no problem for hours on interstate hwy ! Keep sharing! ☮️Houston Texas USA

Hey Jake very informative video thanks for sharing. I do however have a question or two for you. On my left bank 93 4.6l I have two le sprockets does this affect anything? I was unsure if not having an intake sprocket matters or not?? And second question what would the procedure be if the timing chains are already installed thanks for your time.., Mike Vance

How many elavones does it have from the intake cam to the exhaust cam?

I used a square to line up the cams 90 degrees, it looks perfect and according to the square it is perfect, however I end up with 7 links between the sprockets (15 chain pins from LI dot to LE dot). My square can’t lie right? Guess we’ll see how she runs.

Yes. Front wheel drive I take it? It helps to have the cam timing plates for the rear bank to do the job in the car. Not sure if you can find them on ebay but you can also make your own if you're in a pinch.

Hi,hopefully you see this and respond..I’m doing this same job on a 2007 model..is there something I’m missing because I did pretty much everything you did and first time I started it it was really rough with an advanced timing code..second time same result..I can pay you for your help.thanks
