I struggled for a long, long time with modes and scales and the frustration of understanding how piano players seemed to just know that a chord is a major or minor. I thought they were all doing it by ear. Mr. MacPherson, your explanation has been an immense help in this regard. Now I'm going to be like Dory in "Finding Nemo" after she memorizes that address; I'll be waddling around the house saying, "145 Major, 236 Minor, 7 Diminished. C Major, D Minor, E Minor..."

Hey Warren! I just stopped by to tell you about my experience this morning as I did the homework, so to speak, for the C and D major scales using the number system. It was intense! I was so happy to see it unfold that I fought back tears. Lol! I'm no crybaby but that was huge for me! Sometimes, while studying your tutorials, I think of a music teacher from years ago who abruptly paused ... I'm telling you ... she paused with a gasp like something was wrong! My heart jumped not knowing what to expect ... but in the middle of the second lesson, she said what she was teaching me was only taught to students after a year in the program. What she said next is what comes to mind (from time to time) when I study your tutorials. She said, "God is uncovering something in you!" So with that, I just want to say AGAIN ... and I'm sure there will be many more AGAIN(s) lol ...I am truly grateful for your generosity to share your knowledge about music and your wisdom on how to use music to serve God and bless the people. I'm not religious, but this is you ... "A man's gift makes room for him and brings him before great men" Proverbs 18:16 Amplified Bible Classic Edition (AMPC).

Dear Warren, You have been a great inspiration to me through your tutorials. I have all the 97 video tutorials you uploaded on youtube on my laptop. And some that I downloaded from your site. They have been great blessings to me and have helped my piano playing so much. As touching this Number System, this is great. It serves as eye opener for the beginners. But can I make this request from you? Can you continue this tutorial next time by spelling out all the chords (and their uses) for each of the number on diatonic scale? Though you have all these scattered in many of your videos, but I have been looking forward to seeing a particular tutorials where you deal with all possible Chords for tone 1 on the major scale and their purposes, Chords for tone 2, for tone 3, for tone 4, etc on a diatonic scale. The same can be done for tone 1 to 7 on minor scale. I learnt things like this from Germaine Griggs of Gospelkeys (Gospelkeys DVD 202). I am enjoying you all the time. You are doing a very good job to help the worship of our God globally. May the Lord continue to increase you, preserve you and empower you to do more. From Dr. Kilanko Oluwaseun, Covenant University, Ogun State, Nigeria.

Nice Warren . Easy way of explaining the things . I too hate the transpose button . I always play with all keys . To be honest I use the transpose when I’m playing fast and the songs some times fall in sharps . Rest I never use the transpose . I welcome your advice /guidance to the pals who use the transpose button . Once again a nice lesson . God bless you . 👍
@PianoLessonwithWarren5 жыл бұрын
Thanks bro. PS: never use the transposed button, even on fast song in sharp keys, Just pretend it doesn’t exist. It’s better you fumble your way on those fast songs in keys than use the transposed button. There’s a lot to learn when you push through those fast songs in unfamiliar Keys, don’t rob yourself of the learning experience 😊👍🏽🙏🏾

What a coincidence! The number system has interested me for a few weeks and I watched or read everything I could find on the Web, some 30 links. For a beginner discouraged by the classical notation system, it seems that this is the ideal. I read that it is related to the Chinese notation system more than 2000 years old. I hope you explore this topic with practical examples.

Probably the best video on this topic from all I watched. Only couple of things I would suggest to it. I think in this case it is better to speak about keys on the piano instead of "half steps" because not everybody already knows what it is. The practical meaning remains but the same. And if an example of chords are given it would be better not to use inversions and bass notes, since newbies will start to thing about it and have feeling, that they didn't understand something.

@PianoLessonwithWarren5 жыл бұрын
No, it's either in C major, or it's in A minor, but not both. The chord resolution is different based on the key - also, when a song is A miinor the G# is often used which gives E7 resolving to Am.

Hye Warren, i have a weird question : my guitar teacher doesn't use the number system and doesn't wanna hear about it. When I barely talked about it, he said "you are overthinking, don't think too much". He can play by ear and find chords and melodies to a song. I find it very very odd that a music teacher doesn't even use this simple and effective tool. I mean everybody use the numbers, in every genre from pop to gospel to jazz and so on. How does a musician communicate with others if he doesn't use the same terminology ? How would he say "we gon a put a 2-5-1 to the 4 and 5 to go back to the tonic" ? It has been puzzling me for days. He gives me a chord progression to learn. And I say "it is a 1 6 2 5 progression". He would be like "we don't care you think to much...."

Sounds like it’s time you get a new guitar teacher David. You’re paying him, not the other around so no need for you to suffering under his tutelage especially if it doesn’t make sense to you.
