Dude, this is great! I was literally just talking about this with one of my students today and then jumped on the tube and happened to find this video. Going to send it to him to help reinforce our lesson. Thank you for posting this!!

This is a great video for anyone who has not been exposed to this... I was curious what you'd say... on the bass one might think its less important as you get patterns and transposing keys and even substituting/inverting can be done more with patterns... but I think too it's more mental overhead to not think in numbers :). And on the piano going from C to F# key is chaos unless have a different way of thinking -- with it transposing anything becomes pretty easy. I read this book "Writing Music for Hit Songs" by Jai Josefs many years ago and learned this system... its a great book to go deeper on this stuff, and for me became the cornerstone of improvising and coming up with songs.

Thanks Alexi Karuna. For me, thinking in numbers has drastically reduced my mental overload when it came to learning new tunes, understanding music theory, and even ear training. Especially when there's enharmonics involved. but even sometimes for transposing, i find that just using your ear to be the most streamlined approach. i'll often learn a melody or chord progression by just trying to sing it and get the sound in my head. once i have the sound in my head, transposing usually comes more easily for me. if there's an awkward passage that i'm having trouble with, knowing the numbers helps me find my way out. So, while i do use numbers a lot, i try to lean on using my ear first, then numbers.

??????? This must be understandable to those who play instruments that can play chords. I have tried time and again to understand but I can’t seem to catch on.
