Two Manhattan West, the latest addition to the Manhattan West complex, symbolizes the completion of an ambitious saga in New York City's architectural history. From its inception in the 1990s to its recent unveiling, Manhattan West has been a testament to human ingenuity and engineering marvels. Built atop a network of bridges spanning active rail yards, this project demanded innovative solutions to overcome its challenges.
The genesis of Manhattan West dates back to groundbreaking in January 2013, with the Qatar Investment Authority acquiring a significant stake in 2015. The collaboration between Brookfield Property Partners and QIA aimed to transform the area west of Penn Station into a dynamic mixed-use space. The completion of the $680 million platform over the rail tracks in 2014 laid the groundwork for the development of six primary buildings, including residential towers, office spaces, and a hotel.
The engineering feats behind Manhattan West are awe-inspiring. The construction of the platform over active rail yards required precision and creativity to minimize disruption to train services. The skyscrapers, including One Manhattan West, showcase innovative design and structural engineering, with SOM leading the way. Meanwhile, Two Manhattan West, completed earlier this year, stands as a testament to sustainable development, aiming for LEED Gold certification and utilizing renewable energy sources.
The completion of Manhattan West marks a transformative chapter in New York City's skyline, demonstrating the power of collaboration, innovation, and vision. As the area evolves into a vibrant hub, it stands as a testament to human ambition and the enduring spirit of urban development.

I'm glad you noted the structural differences between 1 & 2, but its worth saying that the differences continue above ground too. 2 Manhattan West is basically an all-steel structure (braced steel core and perimeter steel columns) similar to the original WTC towers and 30 Hudson Yards, whereas 1 MW has the unconventional base, but above is a standard steel perimeter column, concrete core structure (typical of modern high-rise office buildings).

3:51 I can't quite believe that I'm saying this, but the futuristic for the late 60s beige concrete sloped façade is (when clean) eminently preferable to the (yawn) common or garden shiny glass refurb. Ooh! Reflective, shiny, glass curtain walled office block. Haven't seen one of those before...

why keep adding office space inventory. NYC is lacking in HOUSING units, not office space. infact office space is in excess with entire office buildings sitting vacant. just rennovate those office spaces if needed.

as an European born 1991, with a knowledge of what happened, I am aware of the high demand for another twins - I see what they did there. It does look good and fits well, but the same time... is a liiiiiiitle... wrong/off also-it gives me the vibe that during this video we all kind of pretend that it has nothing to do with the wtc

The fact that the bottom of the building is so close to the underground trains passing through is quite concerning but I'm sure there's hundreds of buildings which are built very similar due to how dense everything is New York and Manhattan especially.

What is the expected life expectancy for those concrete/metal "coverings"? You don't want to put a Highrise on top, if it's falling apart in X years. Does anyone know?

“Affordable” units mean subsidized by the building. Folks in those apartments aren’t paying $4k, which is market rate.
