I once cross country skied into Skoki Lodge at 7,000 ft. in Banff National Park. It was the first time I truly saw our galaxy. BREATHTAKING.

My plans when I go there and stargaze: 1. Get a good powerful telescope that can see very far 2. Find a good spot 3. Make sure there isn't a cloud where I wanna look at in the sky My goals when I get there: 1. Spot the Andromeda galaxy 2. Find the Magellanic clouds and spot them 3. Try to look at the center of the Galaxy and see what is there 4. Find the Moon and look on its surface 5. Find Saturn 6. Find Jupiter 7. Try to find the ISS. I just love astronomy and I can't wait. 6/4/2021 Edit: haven't been yet lmfao 12/21/2022 Edit: a lot has happened since then. The only thing I'm in the process of doing is getting a good telescope. I have my dad's telescope that he gave to me because he never uses, but I need one that is more powerful than what he gave me. So I'm currently waiting until I move again which will be about 1 to 2 months, then I can get a driver's license, and then I'll get a job and start making my own money. I know that the magellanic clouds are only visible in the southern hemisphere, so goal 2 will have to wait atleast until I can go to the southern hemisphere. New goal. 8. Observe stars and planets, and acquire my own observations and data. (Things like parallax measurements, apparent magnitude, so on.)

The Magellanic Clouds are most visible the Southern Hemisphere. Goals #4-7 can still be done in your backyard with light pollution.

I use to live at the Furnace Creek Ranch. My late husband was the Master Electrician there, and did the wiring in the cafeteria and up at the Furnace Creek Inn. I remember sitting outside my trailer and looking up at the night sky. Seeing is truly believing. I met the late Ken Curtis from Gunsmoke there, and my late husband met the Son's of the Pioneers there also. It really is a different way of life. How many people do you know who can say they played golf on the world's lowest golf course?

I've heard that time lapse videos and photographs of these skies are usually enhanced to make it look more vivid and cooler. I want to see visit places like this but I'm skeptical it won't be anywhere near as cool. Yes there will be more stars to see than closer to cities, but just won't look as great as in the photographs :/

I used to think this as well and while they are touched up, seeing the actual milky way for yourself is absolutely breathtaking. Its better than any photograph may look. You can sit and look up for hours and just be mesmerized. Do it you won’t regret it
