It's Only Money kicks ass, not at all "cringey". It does a good job of giving the album a break from it's gloom and speed. Dave Sherm singing like Phil Lynott is spooky, gritty, and awesome as fuck.

Great review! So good to hear that you know the history of some of these great underground bands. I'm wearing my Vitus tshirt today, and so good to hear a new Obsessed album!. And I agree that it's best when these older bands do a new album and do it like they did at the peak of their game. I want it to sound like The Obsessed! Thx again, good work!

Wino has consistently released good music for years. His involvement in the doom / stoner scene is unparalleled. The new album is great, and I hear a lot of Victor Griffin influence in some of the tracks, which is always nice. Great review, glad to see the band back. EDIT: You should review the new Satan's Hallow album, it's fucking fantastic.

I really got into Victor Griffin's Place of Skulls band. "With Vision" that has Wino in it. I think it's right up there with WIno's top releases. He did one album with Place of Skulls but did not follow up with them because he had is new band at the time, The Hidden Hand.

Another great review. Sarah is out here killing it with her reviews. I'm more mixed on this record than Sarah it seems. The vocals just don't do it for me much. Perhaps because I strongly prefer vocals closer to the 'ring wraith' style than most non-black metal tends to effect. That said, I did think this latest Obsessed record is so fucking on point in instrumentation- great grooves and somewhat timeless sound.

Good review you know your music. This album is the best music I have heard in an a long time. I must disagree with you about the song "It's Only Money" which is one of the strongest on the album. I suspect you don't like it because it is not in your comfort zone as it is unlike music on previous Obsessed albums. I did not realize it was a Thin Lizzy tune thanks for letting me know. This entire album has hooked me I am so glad to hear it.

I think that was Dave Sherman with the "stick em up!" lyric, witch after getting to meet him a few times it didn't surprise me that he would say the because... That's Dave lol. sadly he is no longer playing with The Obsessed, however he is currently working on some new EARTHRIDE! :D

"It's Only Money" is probably my favorite track on the album. lol I LOVE Wino but I'm not really on board with this album and now what the lineup actually is now. I don't say much because I'm friends with their manager and a few people in the Maryland Doom scene. I wasn't happy they they changed the name from Spirit Caravan to The Obsessed. It made no sense and the only reason they did it was becaise The Obsessed is a bigger name than Spirit Caravan. Now that certain members have left the band it's actually really not Spirit Caravan and it's become Wino's band. The entire thing is kinda fucked. I got a copy of this from a friend last week and I DO NOT like this album as a whole. Not enough Doom for me and too Rock & Rollish not to mention that the production seems very wrong. I dig a few songs on this album but unfortunately it's an album I will stop listening to and never go back to it again. Maybe that's why Sherm left and went back to his other bands? Could be. I just know this is one of my least favorite Wino endeavors and that sucks.

Moses Garner I had to give this a few listens before it grew on me, but I did find it a little underwhelming at first, and I was pretty disappointed Dave Sherman left the band and the confusing line up changes that followed. I guess it is what it is. hopefully the new Earth Ride is good at least.

While I very much appreciate the thoughtful review, from what I heard I would say the rating is at least a full skull over-rated. Guitar work was solid, but the vocals seem pretty weak-sauce. Arrangements also seem meh. Keep up the good work though. I never miss an Overkill Review!

I think you guys need to re-think that 5 skulls rating scale and move to an ordinary 0 to 10 scale; don't be afraid to give zeros; and don't let people with fan bias review the albums. Do you know why? because I really don't wanna listen to that album, it's pile of s***, but it's rated 4.1/2 out of 5 ... how?

Genuine Q: How would 10 be any different from 5, really? 4.5/5 = 9/10. Not sure it's "ordinary" either. "5 stars" is a pretty standard measure in reviewing. But we are open to comments, suggestions.

If you just think that meant you'd just double everything, then yes, it would be the same. Who suggested that? not me; you just assumed it. However, if you had any logic in the rating at all, for example, you had pet names for the ranks, like: "0 = mediocre", "2 = very weak", "6 = just above average" etc. you'd know that a 10 is different from 5. Being ranked 2 on a 5 scale and being ranked 2 on a 10 scale is dramatically different in this instance.
