Actually, it's not technically an 8-point game. The defining factor of a "play" is time. A play is an activity of a team on the court in a certain period of time. Which is the time that elapses between the start of the clock and the time it stops. The free throw points were scored before the clock started, so they cannot be add on the next play

I was really surprised when Draymond didn't get the call overturned. Usually once a player informs a ref that they blew it, they quickly retract the call, apologize, and give the ball back to the team that committed the foul. That's just how it's always worked in the NBA.
@Rufgaudas Жыл бұрын
Especially if a Player shouts in the Ref face - that is a solid undeniable argument and refs must act accordingly by retracting the call.

Correction: Larry Bird actually hit 3 clutch shots in the game you are referring to, he hit the 1st that was waved off due to the timeout call, then a 2nd after the timeout to tie the game and send it to overtime, the he hit a 3rd and final clutch shot in the second overtime to seal it. the date was November 7, 1987 bird finished with a staggering 47pts 8reb 7ast 2stl & most importantly 3 clutch shots to ice it. L3g3nd.

@@Blk_Yonko right, that is the very correction that i made above, it wasn't 2 "game winners" as stated in the video but rather 2 back to back clutch shots to send the game to OVERTIME and then a final clutch game winner in 2OT for a total of 3 clutch shots one of them the "game winner". the reason people keep making this mistake is because they are watching the same video that misstates the facts and edits the wrong two shots together omitting the 3rd clutch shot altogether from this game, the final game winner you see bird hit on this video is actually not the one after the timeout but rather the one he hit in 2OT to win it. all of these clutch shots being 3 pointers as well for the record.

Theoretically, it would be possible to have infinite points on 1 play. If you get an and 1, miss the free throw, get the offensive rebound and another and 1, and that process repeats itself over and over again, you could, in theory, get hundreds of points on one play.

As you point out midway through the video, a "play" and a "possession" aren't the same thing. So it's an 8 point POSSESSION that consisted of two distinct PLAYS. Zac Collins was fouled on the first play. He makes his resulting 2 free throws. Additionally, the 3 technical foul free throws are made. That's 5 points and the first play is over, but the single possession continues. When the ball is inbounded, a second play is started. Two plays, one possession. Still pretty rare though.

Correct me if I am wrong, but a singular play along with the ENTIRE PLAY could technically be all from one player and score from that play could technically be almost any number. Hear me out: Let’s say player A shoots a three (and he also is also the best free throw shooter on the team). He is fouled during the shot. The player who fouled then argues and gets a technical. And likewise the coach does as Kerr did. Gets two T’s. AND a third player now also gets a T on the same team. So player A, being the best shooter, now takes 4 technical foul shots. Then takes his first two free throws. He has hit them all so far. So he now has 9 points. He then shoots his last free throw, to miss and gets his own rebound, backs it out to the three point line, shoots, hits the shot and is fouled again. Now he has 12 points, PLUS three foul shots. And repeats the same process. Hits two free throws. Misses the third and gets his own rebound again! 😳😳😳 He now repeats the process. At this point, he has 17 points. And could repeat the process, technically again. I realize the odds have become so astronomical at this point, that scientifically, it is considered basically near impossible. But even if it is like a one in a trillion odds, theoretically it could happen, until the other team runs out of fouls and players (because eventually all players possible, would be ejected off of fouls). But really, the limit is truly unknown how many points could actually be scored on one play, by one singular player. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🏀🏀🏀

Eight points isn't the limit either. This could actually go on indefinitely. Let's say that when Layman hit the final three of this sequence he was fouled. Let's say the foul was ruled flagrant due to an improper closeout. That then results in a FT plus possession again. So the Blazers would be up to 9 points with the chance to hit yet another three. Or if Layman was fouled and missed the FT but the Blazers got an offensive rebound and kicked it out for another three that's an 11-point play. Etc. There's theoretically no limit to how many points could be scored in a possession. It just becomes increasingly less and less likely.

Five point plays really aren't a real thing. In the two examples Ty Lawson did connect on a 3pointer and a tech was called, but Randy Foye actually made that FT. Ty Lawson made a 4 point play but, yes, 5 points were scored by Denver in the possession. In the case of Kyrie vs Westbrook, Kyrie makes a 3 point shot, but when he misses that FT, the rebound he grabbed was the start of a new (very short) possession where he scored two MORE points. Only 1 assist and 4 points can be achieved on a single possession but theoretically many rebounds and steals can occur.

This is why I don't watch his channel - pure fluff and fanboy comments. Kyrie made an OFFENSIVE REBOUND. AKA second chance points. WASTING TIME "debunking" Reggie Miller 6pt play! Fuck this channel😊

Cool video, great storytelling, but to me if the shot clock is reset then that's another possession. If we count a team being given another possession as the same possession then a 40 point play is possible if a 3 point shooter continually gets flagrantly fouled until the bench of the opposing team is empty.

Sure, why not. As long as all the fouls happen at once without play continuing. It's impractical, but not impossible for the opposing team to get so mad at the foul calls they keep getting more. Just like happened here but more. But if enough of the bench gets tossed I would assume they would just call the game so that's a limiting factor. Obviously there are arguments to be made on "is this a play or not" but in the end you gotta call it something. And it's rare enough that you might as well just call it a play.

Incredible video, Jxmy. One small, curious phonetic detail: Steve KERR, Seth CURRY, Steph CURRY, all in the same game...The odds of that...😂😀

I feel like this (more than 4 point plays) has happened a lot more times it’s just not formally tracked so we have to rely on anecdotal remembering them all, I’m almost positive I’ve seen many times where teams make a shot get fouled miss the free throw get the rebound and score afterwards, also just any time a team scored and retained possession because of a flagrant

6:27 Hypothetically, with this system, you could have an infinitely high number of points on a single play. Well, not infinite. You would be within the bounds of the 48 minutes that you get in a game. With this system, you could technically beat a team 150-0 without even giving the other team a possession for the entire game if you just kept on shooting threes, making every single one, getting flagrantly fouled on each shot, and making all of your free throws. I apologize for rambling

Rarest thing I’ve ever seen was just last night I played rec with all randoms and we all missed two or less shots and scored 110 points with no turnovers the whole game we wasn’t in game chat talkin or in a party we all just hooped

That first one with Larry bird actually happened to me. I was 12 years old, we were down by 2 with about 20 seconds left. I had the ball on the right wing right next to my coach, he signaled a time out while i was in my shooting motion and I drained it. Ref said it didn’t count. After the time out we ran a play and my team mate got the ball, he dribbled down to the left corner and pump faked a three, with about 7 seconds left he passed me the ball. I got the ball and put up a contested fade away 3. I banked it in. 2 game winners in the span of 1 minute

I cannot believe he is so easily discounting the 25 point shot by Curly of the Harlem Globetrotters from half court. Easily more than triples this in one singular play, and for some reason always against the Washington Generals.
