Thanks for making this video with the side by side. If you look at it from the behind view like this your argument is very compelling. So compelling that I went back and was 100% ready to retract my comments. I could not find a good side on view of Paul during worlds. They shot everything from behind. There is a side view of Paul 2 weeks later at GMC with the same form change where I would argue that he 1) starts his left arm move later than he did prior to worlds in relation to his plant timing 2) holds his left shoulder back more than he did prior so that it doesn’t hinder his disc getting into the pocket and 3) is more closed with the left shoulder further back at the hit (his chest isn’t as forward) after worlds. Happy for the discussion and pushback.

he basically said his normal left arm hold was screwing up his timing so just held it more passive in the beginning to help with the timing but yeh it looks like he used it even more than normal.

True Paul MacBreath did not use his off arm. He used his on arm the majority of the time when he won the Tour De France. But critics will say it was all his off arm. I’m kind of right in the middle. He most likely had some kind of electric bicycle . You could see some secret wires hanging from the rotator cuffs on the footage on youtube. Just my two cents

the offarm is not just a momentum builder or a thing you flail for follow through. it's a tension setter and a force multiplier. the reason you bring your offarm down and inwards right before you throw is you're increasing the tension / elasticity between your two shoulder points in that upper muscle group, and in turn, when you throw, you're letting that go and giving it mo' powah baby.
@ksu7595 Жыл бұрын
Completely agree. It would probably be more accurate to say that it helps pull rotation, than push rotation. And its not really the arm, more the shoulder protraction that causes the tension. Which means that players like Drew, Eagle, Paul and even GG, are still following the same core principle, even when using their off arm in different ways. The motion of Pauls left arm (and shoulder) is basically finished before he starts the actual throw. In my view, this means that as he is squeezing the left arm and shoulder in, he is resisting it with his coil (i.e. his core), to really strech the back. I have a suspicion that this is something that will be hard to execute for many people, simply because of lack of flexibility/elasticity across the back. Trying to mimic Paul (or other pros) timing with the back arm, will then lead to a much too early rotation.
@ViJt-oq5nq Жыл бұрын
@@ksu7595It does both, it's easier to spin faster when you're tightly compacted (look at figure skaters, dancers, etc) and you can increase the stretch in your upper back by bringing your shoulder in. I've seen Simon also describes it has a 'rubber band' while doing some teaching day with Eagle. So.. people saying the off arm does nothing are really just leaving extra power on the table.

Great video showing why the off arm is important! Remember seeing an interview with Paul after worlds where he discussed that he still used his arm during the throwing motion. That side by side really confirms it!
@NJT1013 Жыл бұрын
Looks like McBeth figured out the most effecient way to use his off arm. Less slag in his movement. Not saying there was a lot before but, leave it to Paul to tighten up what's already pretty close to perfection, right?

Great video. Off arm is one of the most misunderstood aspects of form. I still don't understand how people were saying that Paul wasn't using his left arm at world's, it's like no one even actually looked to see if it was true or not

In the video you're responding to, it was mentioned that McBeth said in an interview that he changed his form because "his off-arm was getting in the way." Do you have any comment on that by chance? (Interview clip: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g3rCoqSKa56Dg7Msi=dPCmfV1_zuOGOY-z&t=690 )

instead of disecting pauls form like a surgeon and trying to figure out how he throws wouldnt it be easier just to ask him? lol or does he keep it some big secret like kfc recipe.

Tbf, a lot of these pros have been throwing for so many years now, some since kids, their form by now is just second nature. It'd be like me asking you to describe all the mechanics your body goes through when you go pick up a cup. You might just describe you reach your arm out n grab it, but some scientist might break down what your legs and core is contributing to the movement 😂 It's why anytime you watch these pros actually try to talk about how they throw or putt, it seems like they don't even know what they do, it's why they all got coaches to tell THEM what they're doing right or wrong.

Overthrow: "If you disagree [with our opinion about the off arm], you are going to say but Paul McBeth has an active left arm. During Worlds last year, what did Paul do when he wasn't playing that good. He said in an interview that he just had to take his left arm out of the equation. So then you start seeing Paul have his left arm way more passive. He would walk up and not use his arm vs slinging that left arm in there. His left arm was getting in his way. How are you going to argue with that?" Well, this video shows that argument is bogus. The side by side shows that when Paul was throwing, nothing ultimately changed.
