The episode was written by Jen Celotta, who was also a co-executive producer on the show and would go on to be co-show runner in latter seasons. In the “Office Ladies” podcast, she discussed how this was a particularly challenging episode to write because Michael is going through so many emotions. She ended up writing a chart to help herself keep track of where Michael was emotionally at each point in the episode.

I just love it when you can spend a whole episode laughing and rolling your eyes at Michael and then, boom, you feel so sad because he's sad. I'm always, like, "Why am I choking up, here?!?!" lol

In the parking lot today, there was a circus! The copier did tricks on the high-wire. A lady tried to give away a baby that looked like a cat. There was a Dwight impersonator and a Jim impersonator. A strong man crushed a turtle. I laughed and I cried. Not bad for a day of the life in a dog food company.

AMBER, I'm sure someone has mentioned it already but in case they haven't the actor who plays the guy that gives Jim a hard time in the other office is one of the main actors in "The Hangover" movie franchise!! Very funny guy!! You guys should definitely check it out!!❤❤

This was the very first episode I caught as it was airing. I think I had only heard of it in passing. I thought they were being so mean to Michael and stopped watching after the intro. Of course, a few years later, my wife and I began watching from the beginning and were hooked.
