The deadlift is one of the most fundamental exercises you can include in any strength program, but is it killing your gains? In this video, I react to the recent interview Robert Oberst did with Joe Rogan on the JRE podcast in which the world champion strongman stated that unless you were a competitive deadlifted, you should avoid the movement all together in your workouts because the risk reward ratio is not worth the potential injury particularly if you are a professional athlete.

I think it’s fair to start by saying that I have been known to bury a few bad exercises in my iron graveyard. Specifically, I believe that the upright row and behind the neck shoulder press are two of the worst exercises you could ever include in your workouts and should be avoided at all costs. Not only are they highly likely to lead to injury but there are superior alternatives that nullify even doing them in the first place.
That said, the deadlift is not one of those exercises that I would suggest not doing. I believe it is one of the most fundamental movement patterns for not just our training plans but for every day life. The need to perform it correctly however is magnified due to the fact that the loads capable of being lifted on this exercise exceed what may be able to be done on any other single exercise.
I do think it’s helpful to apply some context to what Robert is saying however. He is coming from an experience set that demanded he lift as much as he possibly could in order to win whatever competition he was competing in. The difference between first and second place could come down to lifting a weight or not. If a compromise in form was needed to do that, so be it. The end result however was that along with some titles came some unwanted body breakdown that could lead to regrets down the road.
The comments made about the reality of pro sports weight rooms are very true. I can tell you having spent a great deal of time in professional sports training athletes that these guys are not often the best lifters. They got to where they are because of their incredible innate talents and physical gifts. Often times, they learned poor lifting technique at an early age and their ability to compensate through it makes it difficult to spot as they make their way up through college and to the pros.
Forcing these athletes to perform lifts that are supposed to be good for them when their bodies may not be prepared for them properly, could lead to repercussions that could cost them their careers and the purpose of why they are where they are in the first place. This is especially true when you realize that there are other exercises like the power clean and hang clean that can give a training effect with fewer side effects if they are dealing with deadlifting limitations.
This all underscores the importance of redefining what strength really is. It is not simply adding more and more plates to the ends of the bar. Instead, it is realizing that strength is founded on stability. The ability to keep your body free from compensation and lift a weight as mechanically intended without subjecting areas of the body to stresses they shouldn’t normally incur. This doesn’t always manifest itself as blatantly bad form. As discussed in the video, it can be a lot less obvious.
The bottom line is, the deadlift is an important exercise that I believe should not be avoided. It should be learned and learned early however. If you’re looking for programs that teach you how to do this important lift the right way and program it into our day by day workout programs, be sure to click the link below and pick out the ATHLEAN-X program that best suits your specific goals.

Absolutely. I got great gains on deadlifts using what would be a 10 rep max for only 8 reps. Other than warm ups, just one set per week, an 8 rep set, 2 reps shy of failure. I slowly moved the poundage up only when that 8th rep still felt strong. Never had a lower back issue. Basically, guys gotta stop doing heavy singles and triples in deadlifts unless they're competing.

When done responsibly and smartly, this exercise can be the key to a strong core. 25 years ago I suffered chronic lower back pain - each morning I woke up with pain so bad I could hardly breathe. I started deadlifting, very light at first (135 for 10 reps), and slowly added weight over time to remain within a 12-15 rep range. Within 6 weeks my back pain disappeared, and I have never suffered with it since. Deadlifts became my core power exercise and I eventually was able to lift 455 for 4 solid reps then finish off with 365 for 10 reps. At 48 years old, I'm not afforded the regularity I would like in my training due to my career, but I still use the deadlift as my core power exercise, and it supercharges my workout which is typically followed up with chest or shoulders and abs. As you mentioned, context is key! I recommend everybody learn how to deadlift properly and incorporate this key core strength exercise into a regular routine.

Please make a video on how to prepare for deadlift and what to do after deadlifts? Like what exercise to do to get strong and prepare for deadlift and what exercise to do after to prevent any issues for the low back and others body parts involved. Please share your knowledge. If a video could be sanctified this video should be made a saint. I'm 51, 6'2" and in the last 5 months through VERY careful deadlifts I've fixed my low back pain and stability issues 100%. 20 years of back pain gone as if it was never there. In my case apparently I had major movement pattern problems - the nerve issues started with that - wrong way of moving. My work is in tight spaces and bent over or on my knees. A few hours of that an most people will develop low back issues anyway. What I did in the gym the last 5 months is 1 hour long sessions of deadlift singles - every 1-3 minutes, depending on when my pulse slows down. The stress is on form and especially BRACING. The prolonged workout does wonders. Your body learns to move properly and it seems to not "forget" when you walk out of the gym. 8 months ago I could not walk, drive, or lay down normally for 3 whole months - the low back pain had flared. Getting in bed took full 5 min - screaming and in very slow motion. Same with getting out of bed. I had started to think that I'd be crippled for life. Thing is - if you can actually sustain consistent gym visits (no injury to stop you) just deadlifts make you grow like crazy. I'm completely natural (only medicine I take is a low dose thyroid med) and I've had a low carb diet the last 3 months. About 10 days ago I was shocked to see that my old knee pads do not fit any more - my quads had grown in the last 3 months! I could not lock the knee pads at all - my legs were just way bigger than a few months ago! Same goes for chest and back. Back is directly stimulated by the deadlift but the chest probably grows because of the massive release of hormones that the deadlift causes + speed benching with very light weight for 1 hour with 2-3 min rest between sets. Once again - it all hinges on being able to go to the gym week after week (I deadlift once a week). It is truly impressive to make visible progress doing mainly dealifts, being 51, natural, working physical work long hours, and being tall. If anything should be said it is this: The mindset is #1, before everything else. Exactly as Jeff says - you need to know WHY you are deadlifting. Also because at the end of the day nobody gives a flying shit how much you deadlift.

@@alansmith4655 Never a problem. Today I drove 150 miles. Sitting is the worst for low back pain. And did 9 jobs requiring extensive squatting, bending, being on my knees, weird half bend postures leaning to one side, carrying weird shaped heavy equopment... You get the idea. Zero low back back pain. If anything - I believe the abs just like any other muscle need to be trained to activate without you thinking about it. Recently I actually learned to use my back muscles and whatever upper back discomfort I ever had is all gone. I suggest you watch the videos of a bodybuilder mountaindog1. There are many lessons how to learn to activate all kinds of muscles. Pure gold content. Good luck.

Jeff addresses this, basically, but IMO the biggest problem with deadlifts is that, even more than lifts like bench, or even squats, you are more likely to hit your best deadlift numbers with poor form. This is because your lower back muscles, traps, grip, and quads will tend to be strong enough to move a weight that will curve your spine. At a high level, that doesn't seem to happen as much with PRs in the other major lifts as it does with deadlifts. That's not to say that walking out a heavy squat isn't just as dangerous, but, though the squat can still injure you if you have perfect form, you're less likely to hit your best squat with "bad" form, compared to the deadlift. With a squat or bench if your form breaks down, you tend to just miss the lift--there isn't as much room to grind it out with broken form. If more gyms had proper glute-ham and back extension apparatus, rather than just the 45 degree ones, there would be more readily available, effective, but alternatives to the deadlift for effectively developing spinal erectors. Unfortunately, that's isn't the case.

6:20 in the video was the key take a way I got. Functional strength is a person's TRUE strength. How well can you pull a deadlift raw without putting your back at anterior pelvic tilt/lumbar disc explosion risk? Is adding another 20 pounds worth it or does mastering the weight with steady progression have higher significance?

Jeff you are by far my favorite coach and Industry professional ... and this is a brilliant episode. I do feel the OPT Model is the underlying basis of content. The Optimal Performance Training model completely lives on that premise. STABILIZATION is the foundation of all exercise; lifting, cardio, flexibility ... and all CPT graduates live in that body of information.

At age 61 I started training to compete in senior masters track sprint events. I came across a strength protocol for sprinters created by Barry Ross a well-respected trainer for many amateurs and professional athletes including Alyson Felix fastest woman in the world. At the center of the protocol was the deadlift done heavy (85-95% of 1RM) 4x3 sets reps with a maximum of 8 seconds under load for each set, then rest for five minutes. Barry tested ground forces produced by those who used his protocol and found that they produced more ground force than other lifting protocols which backed the Mass Specific Force model used by Dr. Peter Weyand to predict speed based on the amount of force applied to the ground in a quick manner relative to the mass of the athlete. Long story short if you want to be the fastest runner possible start with heavy deadlifts to get the needed strength to apply force and defeat gravity. I'm 73 now and still deadlifting and sprinting. A Super Deadlift bar or a Hex bar can be gentler on the back too, and just as effective.

I use a Rogue Hex bar for deadlifts now since having a bone spur removed from my spine. It places less stress on my knees and lower back. Performing deadlifts with a hex bar keeps my form consistent and stable every time, and has made me considerably stronger.

As an intermediate lifter, I too avoid the direct deadlift due to the risks involved. Instead, I use the hex bar, as it shortens the route and is much easier on the lower back.

Thanks for insight, what i learned and of course will aply. For commoners like me, focus on good form and posture, keep the stability and not just focus on strenght only. I see a lot of people make a mistake by ignore the form and use momentum just a sake to add another weight but ignore the foundation n isolation. Thanks a lot for insight
