The Jmod is of real benefit to your transmission-it's healthy for it to have this done. Removing the lower springs drastically reduces the clutch slip between gear changes, and the holes that are drilled make the transmission operate more efficiently and "breathe" easier in a hydraulic sense.

Hey I have a 03 gt with the 4r75w. I just did your mod exactly how you did. took me about 2 hours total from start to finish. (I double checked with the video a couple times, to make sure I didn't miss anything!) I have to say, This is the easiest write up/video on this that I came across. I was dreading this mod because I have never did any work with auto trans before. I am very pleased with the outcome, GREAT under normal driving and EXCELLENT under hard acceleration.. BARKING TIRES FTW!

This procedure is called a J-mod properly because it was named after Jerry Wroblewski who participated in the design on the 4R70W Transmission. Since it's Jerry's Modification it's call the Jmod.

My 2004 Marauder has a tune and a very aggressive transmission shift. It is made even more pronounced by solid rear control arms and 4.10 gears. My 2004 Town car is a low mileage garage queen and completely stock chassis-wise. On both cars I use your transmission fluid pump technique to change the fluid occasionally especially in Florida where heat kills auto transmissions. I just consulted this video this morning for a fluid swap on the Lincoln. It only yields ~4 quarts so I did it three times and used a case of fluid. The color change is quite impressive!! Thank you for posting this and sharing your knowledge and expertise!

While not exactly the same as the crown vic trans you are doing here. The principles are pretty much the same.Many thanks to the Thunderbird form as well. I used their layout to drill my plate.

I am in the middle of this jmod on my 2003 p71, this video has helped ALOT! I have just gotten to 37:39 and am going to be calling it a night. I really believe that the hardest part of this whole mod was getting those two rear bolts out of the transmission pan to drop that pan...and I am no good with transmission gaskets so I hope everything seals back up alright. Thanks again!
@Jmodderator
@Jmodderator 11 жыл бұрын
The 4R70W transmission has a lot of clutch slip between gears and this is what creates that soft seamless shift most AARP members prefer, AKA "The Grandma shift." With the Jmod, you get a quicker shifting transmission with firmness you can control through throttle application and a longer lasting transmission too.

Started with this on my 06 P71, ended up rebuilding the whole trans. Turned out my direct clutch was smoked due to a internal hemorrhage caused by the case being worn where the ring seals on the output shaft ride. I had the case repaired with a steel sleeve and totally rebuilt it adding an extra friction and steel in the direct clutch and of course doing the J-mod. Totally different trans now, shifts much firmer and mileage went up, who knows how long the direct was slipping. Dig the 70's porn movie soundtrack on the video.

Very well done. I had this procedure done on the advice of my rebuilder on our Saleen S281 Budget a few years back. This mod, along with a couple other mods and and what the rebuilder called a Police Interceptor torque converter, really woke up the slush box. Hated having an auto trans in a Saleen, but at least the boss was happy and could drive the car frequently. Just picked up a CV LX Sport for my son. A well cared for one owner 211k mile car, I'm sure we'll be looking at a trans rebuild down the road. The car is SO clean that even a $1500 rebuild/mod on the trans is money well spent. Thanks for the great info and insight. Again, VERY well produced video! Sending it to my buddy who is a rear wheel drive platform engineer at FoMoCo!

I performed this exactly as shown in the video and all went great! I must say this is a great shift improver.. No neck snapping shifts. Proportionate to the throttle pressure. Just right.. also DO drill the plate for the reverse engagement. It eliminates that annoying delay! Great job on the video and thanks a million. I bought my VB gaskets and 8 check balls from the ford dealer and they were spot on.

@@tony_5156 yeah rewatch 28:00 where he explains it. But basically you take your drill bit and very gently ream out the holes on the gasket because just like the valve body previously, the gasket hole(s) are the same size that the holes in the valve body previously were.

Research the Softer Mustang Spring. Their trans was set for more of a Sport shift. This spring has less resistance than the stock FIRM CV/GMQ spring. NO ONE I have ever helped do one or done one on has asked for one after. I'd tell you to Do the entire process, Pull both bottom springs. If you do not like it, As shown, You can reinstall the bottom 1-2 with a simple pan drop.

ARP Pro flex plate bolts, Mr gasket TC nuts, Ford Racing bell housing to block bolts, 2400-2800 stall converter. I busted the motor mounts getting the transmission out so new pioneer motor mounts. Royal Purple Max ATF, magnafine in line filter, SCT tune, all new sensors wiring harness valves etc, As soon as they are available Im ordering the SR performance transmission pan +2 QTS............All because I watched this Jmod video.

Yes, and to anyone doing the 1-2 accum procedure the valve body does not have to come out. A C clamp or bottle jack can keep the accumulator from popping out. Search for TSB 97-11-11 on google for the correct springs for your car. Also, all these trans should use ONLY branded MERCON V to stop trans shutter! On some years you can remove the torque converter screw and easily drain all fluid. It was doable on my 95 tbird. I heard newer 2004?? units don't have it.

GREAT video, I have a question. I am installing a good used 1998 4R70W in my Mark VIII. I want to do this J-Mod but I only find 94-97 Drill specs which are different then what you mention. More holes and about 6 different size bits Vs only TWO sizes on your video. That said for my 1998 4R70W should I just drill the six holes you mention and in the same sizes as mentioned? I don't want to screw up anything. THANKS in advance!

Just did this on my 99 grand marquis and even found the factory dipstick tube plug sitting in the pan. Sure brought that crappy slush box alive! shifts great, still not as firm as the C6 in my truck though.

For the 1-2 Which is considered the "Lower' spring as I have read some have just used that spring but not both. Thanks
@Jmodderator
@Jmodderator 9 жыл бұрын
If the video is unclear, The lower refers to the spring you see first when you remove the caps that retain them both. Imagine the car in it's on the ground orientation, and not upside down like the video shows. The lower is down or closest to the trans pan.

Hello, is the whine at full throttle that I hear in my CVPI coming from the serpentine belt or the torque converter in the transmission? Your response greatly appreciated!!

Great video. A good friend of mine owns a trans shop in the Detroit area. Builds some pretty mean Chrysler and other race trans. I'm local too, (Troy). I recently acquired a super-clean 1994 Crown Vic LX. Have 25,600 on the clock as of yesterday. My trans developed the nasty 40-45 mph shudder/vibration, I had the unit flushed and filled with Mercon V per the Ford TSB. About 1000 miles later, the shudder is back, somewhat gentler, but has got progressively worse in the space of 50 miles. Car has an at idle very subtle "lope" as if it had a performance cam. This is a departure from the Grandma car smooth idle. Something is up. It looks like tear-down trans time. I'm going to have my friend Tim rebuild it for me. I watched your video, love it! Way to share great info. Finally my last question: When performing the J-mod on a 1994 transmission, where can I find solid info on what holes to drill in the seperator plate and what size?

This is not applicable for the AOD transmission.

Thank you for the response. As of last night, my trans builder friend sent me outside to look at the door tag, and my trans is a "P" or an AOD.

He's right in the aspect you should have a very clean environment, And you should avoid all debris when you reassemble the VB. Having said that, When we shot this is was wicked cold,we only had two small electric space heaters,it was the second time we shot the video and all 3 of us were sick. No one cared about surgical cleanliness on a film prop.

Hey rizzo. I have a 2000 mustang gt and i just did my transmission. I followed all the steps according to the instructions that came with the kit and your instructions, I put everything back together the way it supposed to. Now i started the car and when I put it on reverse the engine turned off. I can't switch any gears because it turns off. Any comments on what's the problem or how can i fixed it i will appreciate it. Thanks

On the 2-3 shift bore area, concerning that round piece that you bend the tangs on to hold it in place. Is there any chance it could get cocked in the bore crooked during normal operation? It looked as though you had a little trouble setting it flat(ish) in the bore so I was just wondering about that since I don't really know what's going on there. Thanks in advance
