The soldier was Hiroo Onoda, an intelligence officer for the Japanese imperial army. The guy held up in the Philippine jungle for almost 30 years. He was originally with two other people, but one came out of hiding and the other died. Hiroo killed over 30 people thinking they were enemy soldiers and raided villages for supplies. He refused to believe that the war had ended, and thought it was just a ploy from the pro U.S. Tokyo government. The military tried for years to get him to come out by giving orders over loudspeaker into the jungle, and air droping fliers bassically saying "the wars over dipshit". He came out when his commanding officer came out and personally ordered him to stand down.
