Just my 2 cents. Old anime tend to be good because the ones that still get remembered today are the good ones. I'm sure for every Yu Yu Hakusho there'd be at least dozens of trash that simply got filtered and forgotten over time. Just to add onto the beginning discussion, I feel like everyone included here is nitpicking. Old anime that I saw as a child had a lot of still images, even more than most anime today. Even Yu Yu Hakusho has still images! They did things like sliding the camera across a still image, rolling it around, and playing a small animation over and over again. And when it comes newer anime, it also heavily depends what you are talking about. Not every anime show is the same and the quality can vary drastically depending on the budget and who was working on the project. But they certainly haven't magically downgraded. I personally believe that nowadays anime has only gotten better, with the exception of CGI being overused at times. And one thing Charlie said that really sounded wrong to me, was people being used to bad fight scenes... What? I can't recall a single good fight from like post 20's with the exception of Cowboy Bebop that aired like 1998. The oldest ones are like a punch, some sound effect and screen fades to black at times. But I can't confirm this too much besides clips on youtube and my memory. Your thoughts?

Talking about how good anime looked back then compared to now, it depends. Some modern anime look as good as the older stuff while others don't. Heck I've seen a couple of anime from the 80s and 90s that don't have the best fight scenes. It really depends, but it looks like Toei animation is one of the worst when it comes to modem anime fight scenes surprisingly enough.....
