We're continuing the work on the harbour of Port Douglas - developing the major bulk of the harbour's oil industry. First up we've gotta rectify some of the issues identified in the last episode: the freight rail network needs a revamp, as the current ramp is way too steep!

If you want to buy Cities: Skylines or any of its DLC and support me at the same time, you can do so at www.nexus.gg/i...
What's the rationale behind this project:
What happens if a washed-up-used-to-be-KZbinr gathers a bunch of "generic" looking assets (though mostly inspired by Australian / Canadian cityscapes) with the hopes of creating a Cities: Skylines region full of towns and cities that both look realistic and are inspired by Australia, New Zealand, Canada and the USA, while at the same time don't really replicate any one particular style? No idea, let's find out.
Join me in this Cities: Skylines modded gameplay / let's play / timelapse series as we expand the region, and build new infrastructure, highways, public transit, industrial pockets, NIMBY-neighbourhoods, sprawling suburbs and bustling downtowns. And of course, use tress excessively to cover up any imperfections!
Q & A:
Do you have a MOD/Asset list?
Not at this point in time.
Which map is this?
Anahita Pass by Owl - although slightly modified
Which Theme and LUT are you using?
Theme is Los Angeles by OWL, slightly mixed with Grass and Pavement textures from the NotSoRocky Hills theme by Khanador. LUT is Coastal by Ronyx69.
How do you place residential buildings so fast in suburbs/neighbourhoods?
I use a tag-based trick with the Find It mod, I've made a tutorial here: • Build Cities The FASTE...
Which visual MODS do you use?
Here's the full list of enabled visual mods (I don't know if some of these cancel out others): Relight, Render IT!, Ultimate Level of Detail, Clouds & Fog Toggler, Daylight Classic, Adaptive Prop Visibility Distance, Softer Shadows, Ultimate Eyecandy, ShadowStrengthAdjuster, Sharp Textures, Sun Shafts, AD Cloud Enabler, Shadow Distance Fix, 8K AD Clouds Pack 01.
Which graphic settings does your game run?
Everything is set to high, 1440p resolution.
Hardware specs?
3080, 32 GB ram, I5-12600KF.

Prince Nasir Al-Subaai looks across the room, before asking: " _What are they thinking, my brother and these American lawyers_ ?" Bryan Woodman: " _What are they thinking? They're thinking that it's running out. It's running out... and ninety percent of what's left is in the Middle East. This is a fight to the death_ .” - Syriana, 2005 As always, I would greatly appreciate a LIKE and a COMMENT, thank you all! - Moving forward, Patrons get early-access to future episodes, since I sometimes create two videos within a few days, and have to arbitrarily wait a bit to make the second video public since I want to space out content (and since the almighty KZbin algorithm seems to punish day-to-day uploads harshly, if not done consistently). It's just another little perk to being a Patron - and as is the case for the other perks, it's available to all tiers, starting from 1$ PETRODOLLAR a month. More often than not, those early-access episodes will probably be made public within a few days, so it's nothing crazy! If interested, take a look over at www.patreon.com/infrastructurist - thank you! Hope you all had a safe entrance into 2023 - and that 2023 will flesh out good for all of you!!! Much Love, Infra

This looks great! I especially love the Kennebec Lift Bridge. 😉A few ideas. First of all, I think you should swap the rail bridges over the road before you get to the water on the way to Port Douglas. The truss bridge over the roads on the original line look older and the steel girders over the road on the line you just put in look more modern. That said, this is a pretty minor and inconsequential change (although probably also easy!). Secondly, in considering the approaches to the old bridge I think one needs to consider the history. Before this bridge there was probably access to Port Douglas only by ferry (or perhaps also by some floating bridges that washed out in storms). The bridge was built by necessity of a rail line to the new port they were building on the island that was the only place in Coniferia that would have good access to the "newer" deep draft ships of the time. So the whole rail line was put in from scratch and is pretty straight and level. Where did they put in the new bridge? Just downstream from (closer to Port Douglas than) the old ferry line which was put in just "upstream" where there was the shallowest and narrowest area of water to cross. So the "old highway" should actually be much older, curvier and follow contours down to the water upstream from the bridge to where the old ferry was. And you can have a hard turn from the bridge itself to a ramp down to the old ferry where it meets up with the old highway. (In other words, the highway over the bridge actually has sharp turns at the end because the old bridge itself was built afterwards and had immediate connections to the "real" older highway -- and those road connections were secondary to the real purpose of the bridge which was to put a rail line in. The road on the bridge was making smart use of the investment that was actually needed for rail.) You already have a road on the Port Douglas side hugging the coast and that was where the old ferry came in and, until the new motorway and bridge was built many decades later, the original road route into Port Douglas. Anyway, that's my backstory for that. Later as passenger rail was growing in importance to the large city of Pine Harbor the new rail line project was built specifically for passenger rail to accomplish two things: allow more frequency of high speed rail not encumbered by slower freight trains plus remove at-grade crossings from the old rail line that was causing increasing havoc with traffic as trains came in more often. No need to do this for freight rail because it's not traveling through Port Douglas traffic anyway.

Lovely post-NYE vid. You should definitely add some oil drilling to the Port Douglas island itself. It never made much sense to me why you would chose to make such a big town and all this heavy industry on an island instead of the mainland. So if there’s oil drilling somewhere on the opposite side of the island, it would make more sense that the island is populated and has such great infrastructure connections to the mainland.

Happy new year! I think you came up with a very good fix for the cargo rail, mate. However i‘m not sure if the cargo station sitting next to the Oil industry main building is still connected/useable. It looks as if a train would have to „change direction“ at the second cargo station, if that‘s even possible. I‘m excited to see you take your attention for detail and apply it to the Oil Area. Nice start.

I'm likely thinking about this all wrong due to sleep deprivation, but I don't believe your cargo train terminal is properly connected to both send and receive deliveries; at least, I know in my experience, there are always issues using single lane train traffic.

Wow, that's one way of implementing my suggestion. I was tinking of an even shorter and older bridge. But you definitely made this bridge that looks like it's from the early 20th century work. An oil industry is an interesting choice and could actually be a point of contention between Port Douglas and Pine Harbour. The location of the local oil company headquarters alone could be an issue. Then there's the perception of one reaping the benefits of the economic activity that the company brings, while the other suffers more of the environmental consequences. I smell some community involvement in the near future. Also, it's an easily overlooked thing, but you seem to change the introduction of your video's a lot. I think that this is a good thing.

Hi, first of all I love your videos and great job! It’s great to have you back on KZbin. I have two smaller additions to the oil harbour ( 27:14 ) which could make it look even more realistic: Usually, there is only one straight pier (called jetty) on which the pipelines reach from the storage area into the water. From there the ship attaches its own manifold system onto the harbour infrastructure (there is no need to have the smaller network lead off to the right. The ship has its own pipeline on deck which distributes the oil into the cargo holds.). Furthermore, would it make sense for a larger oil harbour to have additional smaller jetties to allow refined products (like diesel, gas or chemicals) be transported via ship. A great reference port is the major oil harbour in Alaska (Port Valdez) or the city of Freeport in Texas. Maybe it is worth checking it out to get a better idea. Love the series!

For the offshore pipeline, there will only be one set of pipe needed to transfer liquid bulk cargo since the cargo-manifest (where the cargo is discharged from) is located amidship and there's only one onboard. Also, a longitudinal peer will be used for mooring, and mooring buoys furthur off the peer for longer vessels (located infront of the bow, behind the stern for mooring line to be attached) Another good idea is that the three set of bridge don't need be have height restrictions so large vessels can pass under, cargo vessels can come in from the other side and all the bridge can be lowered.

Great job as always. It would be cool if the old bridge had a different alignment compared to the new bridges - more perpendicular to the strait so that the actual bridge section is shorter than the angled new bridges. In the past a shorter bridge would have been more technically feasible. This would also give an additional benefit to the new bridge - a faster/more direct alignment that was considered necessary to shorten passenger rail trip times

With the 4 tracks going into Port Douglas Station, perhaps 2 tracks could be used for if the population expands to other parts of the island. That way, trains can be used for express services into the CBD of Port Douglas while trams can continue to be used to transport passengers over shorter distances.

i just discovered this channel - and I am amazed! I love the style of the videos and the way you build! There are only some additions I wanna mention regarding the railway infrastructure. First of all, the new harbour connection is a big step towards realism and I think it fits the setting pretty well! But the connection to the existing network (built in 11:58) is kinda odd, because you use a very straight route and neglect the terrain, which is the go to method for newly built high speed rail, but as that is the old line, I would love to see a little bit more curves. Also, when looking at the real word, bridge and ram structures out of concrete or steel are avoided as they're very expensive, instead a normal railway enbankment is preferred. (examples of overused bridge structures: 13:27, I would end the bridge segment after the road is crossed, or 14:33, where you have bridge stucturess just obove the ground which seems unrealistic to me) I hope this is some helpful feedback haha, love your videos

U doing a nice Job with ur series! Only note i would point out, that the cargo track is too long for just being single track. U could do double tracks apart from the bridge or create pass sections. Once the hole Harbour Section is filled, u may otherwise have Cargo trains blocking each others way.

Impressive work infra! I don't have any names but some lore 🙂. Coniferia Petrol is a subsidiary of a much bigger logistics company called Coniferia Logistics. In 1928, Andrew Martin, the owner of Coniferia Logistics at that time, decided to open Coniferia Petrol to boost profit. He chose Port Douglas because there were more people living there than Pine Harbor. He also opened an oil production area in the outskirts of Coniferia. In 1940, the business wasn't doing well and the business almost closed. But funding from other companies saved it. In 1972, an oil boom happened and profit skyrocketed. Of course the housing crisis happened and there were no places for the workers to live so Bob Davis, the owner decided to build housing to the workers. All the homes were the same. And that's how Coniferia Petrol is today. I hope you have a good New Year as well and peace out.

I think with bridges for both cars and trains they try to keep the bridge part as short as possible and have an earth mound support it wherever possible. Building on earth is much cheaper than building an elevated track or rail. This is why the bridges in Port Douglas always felt a bit too large, in my opinion. Otherwise a great build!

Cool build, I would probably change the part of the old road that isn't on the bridge. It just doesn't look like a road that once connected capital to the region. I would imagine something more American-highwayish. The old bridge itself would be sort of a bottleneck.

In relation to the pipe harbor: The pipe area is not cyberpunkish at all, this is excaktly what was buildt end of 22 and ready to use now in 23, in north Germany to import oil and gas from the U.S. If anything it's old school, because we moved away from the far out dock piping, but due to the crisis this was fast and it's working.

Golden rule: Trains especially the cargo/freight trains (in real life) can work with 1.5% slope gradient. The lower the better. Else it will be difficult for them to climb. High speed railways allows 2.5% to 4% gradient. These are the golden rules to make your railways realistic. Hope these helps Also trains in general needs wide curve radius of 125m as minimum, atleast in NA. But then again, it’s just a game 😂 don’t be pressured about it. Just imagine your trains are superior than other types of modern trains😂😂
