The recording of The Old Vine Conference, Jumilla Edition held at the Jumilla Wine Museum on the 23rd April 2024, with the following presentations:
"Old vines in Spain: Buried treasure" by Sarah Abbott MW, co-founder of The Old Vine Conference, who explained more about the mission of the Old Vine Conference, the importance of old vines in Spain and how the work carried out by the Old Vine Conference in association with members like DO Jumilla aims to raise awareness of their value and keep more of them in the soil.
"New adaptation strategies of Monastrell to climate change" presented by Rocío Gil Muñoz, Lead Researcher in the Department of Viticulture at the Murcian Institute of Agricultural and Food Research and Development (IMIDA). She spoke about how Monastrell's strengths and adaptation to extreme conditions has led to the development of new grape crossings designed to cope with the challenges of climate change.
"The role of soils in Jumilla's terroir" presented by Dr Joaquín Cámara Gajate, PhD in Soil Science, Assistant Professor at the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Dr. Cámara explained the concept of terroir and soil's role within it, before introducing the geological make-up of the Jumilla region and the heterogeneous soil profiles seen in his study of four different vineyards across the region.
The session ended with a round table moderated by Sarah Abbott MW, opening up to the floor for questions and comments.
