The first real outing for my new camera, the OM System OM-1 and putting it through it's paces at Attenborough Nature Reserve.
This could be the beginning of a move to micro four-thirds for me I think.
Come and take a look and see what you think of the results and my thoughts on the new system.
Go check out Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust too at their website www.nottingham... - some great places to visit and get involved!

I enjoyed your video. You presented some nice images. I'm glad you are enjoying your new camera. I too am drifting from Canon to Olympus, although I have been using both systems for the past three years. I used the OM D EM1 MkII for my personal and travel photography and my Canon full frame for professional real estate, sports, and bird photography. I have invested so much money in Canon that I was reluctant to let go. The first push for me was an Olympus sponsored event at a local camera store where they lent out gear and hosted a photo walk for a few hours. I was loaned the OM D EM1 MkII with the original M.Zuiko 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO Lens. I took several hundred photos, including many of flowers. I was so blown away by the quality that it sold me, and I bought the exact same combination. I am sure you will be equally impressed with your ne updated combination. For me, the new OM-1 and recent 150-400 lens will push me out of Canon. As much as I love the image quality, I am getting older I no longer enjoy lugging my Canon 500 f4 over hill and dale. Good luck with your decision.

Thank you! It's taking quite a bit of soul searching to make my mind up but I think for my health's sake it's the right camera for me to use going forward. Definitely the difference in weight is something that's a real game changer for me - I no longer dread the days of pain after taking the 150-600 out with me! Definitely more tests to come though - hoping to get out to the peak district soon for some tests on the new 12-40mm f/2.8 PRO II lens!

Nice commentary on the OM-1, and absolutely beautiful images captured with that 75-300mm. In the past, I have seen many say that that lens isn't sharp, but the reality is, it is very sharp -- most people were trying to hand hold that lens all the time when IBIS wasn't all that great. I used to shoot mine all the time with a tripod, and got amazingly sharp results. Once I upgraded to the E-M1X, the IBIS is so good that it made the 75-300mm a new hand holdable beast. Obviously, it does really well combined with the OM-1. Thanks for the beautiful images and your impressions of this new camera.

Thank you Greg! The 75-300mm lens can be an amazing work horse as long as you remember it's equivalent length. Shoot at least at 1/600s and you can get hand held steady shots every time! The OM-1's IBIS and high ISO handling is just the icing on the cake really! Definitely more to come from this combo I think!

I have a 300mm f4 + MC14 (I seldom take it off) on my birding/wildlife OM1 and it is an amazing camera. Using CAF + TR + bird recognition I have captured images of Pheasants in flight that I could not capture with my EM1X, let alone my EM1.3. The OM1 AF locks on so much faster than the EM 1 series bodies. I use my other OM1 with my 60mm f2.8 macro lens and the improved EVF and LCD make macro a lot easier. For BIF fans, the 50 fps is no gimmick. I decided to give it a just a brief test a few days after purchasing my OM1's and haven't changed back.

The temptation for trying out a 300mm f4 is growing every day! Every one has said its the sharpest wildlife lens they've ever used! Paired with the OM-1 I think it could be a near perfect solution without increasing the weight too much!

Just stumbled across your video's and thoughts on the OM (baby) system 😀 Thank you so much for sharing your experiences and thoughts. I bought the em1 mkiii back in October. The OM-1 is sooo on my wish-list lol For me it was especially helpful hearing your thoughts on the 75-300 as a great alternative for lighter weight in the future.

Thank you Kim! Definitely loving the new system. I bought a used EM-1 Mk2 back in December and was blown away with the usability and quality of the images so when the OM-1 was announced I pounced on it! The 75-300 needs to be treated as a 600mm to get the best from it (min shutter of 1/640) but once you get that right it's a brilliant lens and easily up there with the results I used to get from my huge Sigma 150-600 full frame!

I have and use almost every single Pro Lens from Olympus and Panasonic, and they are fantastic! But the small and light 75-300mm is amazing, and I bring it with me every day! The combo OM1 + Oly 75-300mm is unbelievable good!

Hi Leigh. I am about to switch from Canon 60D to OM-1. Or Sony A7IV, full frame. Not sure yet. How much denoising do you use on your images?
@LeighWPhotos
@LeighWPhotos 2 жыл бұрын
Generally very little. If you push too far in low light though I do add a bit of denoise in my raw processor (RawTherapee or ART on Linux). The ability to recover so much in the images from the OM-1 makes things a lot easier to manage though and with a massive weight saving to add to the mix too!

Enjoyed watching- well done. I’ve Just purchased the OM-1 - big upgrade from my EM10 Mark 3. I have been trying out the same. Kit: OM-1 with the 75-300. One question: any chance of posting your settings a for your excellent pics? Presume Hogg shutter speeds - interesting to see what iso you are shooting at as it looked like a cloudy day.
@LeighWPhotos
@LeighWPhotos 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you Brendan! You'd be surprised how low I keep the shutter speed on a grey day! Most of the shots in the video were at 1/670 and f/6.7. The ISO varied from being up at 200 when the sun came out down to around 2000 for the shots that were more in shade. I did take a few at ISO6400 but it was just too dark where we were to get a proper exposure so didn't use the shots. I'm finding with a bit of noise reduction I can get away with up to ISO3200 without too many problems. Definitely an improvement over the E-M1 Mk2 I have and easily on par with the Canon 5D Mk4 that I'd been using previously with the 150-600mm Sigma lens.

@@LeighWPhotos Thanks.. I'm struggling to work out best settings for shutter speed/ISO/F stop with the same setup... though it's likely due to lack of practice and not being as good a photographer 🙃
@LeighWPhotos
@LeighWPhotos 2 жыл бұрын
My rule of thumb is to set the shutter to at least 1/600 - treat the lens as a 600mm not a 300mm to eliminate any chance of shake. The IBIS is kind of at it's limits at the 300mm range so it helps to treat it as the full frame equivalent. If you then shoot wide open at f/6.7 and let the ISO do it's thing in auto you should be pretty good to go in most conditions. You can drop the shutter speed down to 1/320 but be aware you might not get the sharp shots quite as often. Have a try and see how you get on - practice makes perfect!

Hi some really nice shots there if you sell your Canon gear then I would purchase the Olympus 40-150 pro and the MC 2.0 with the grip then you would have a very good portable compo. This would still be very light compared to your Canon gear and the images would be a lot sharper then the 75-300 just a thought.
@LeighWPhotos
@LeighWPhotos 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Wayne! I was considering the 40-150 but I'm also looking at either the 100-400 or possibly the 300 pro for a bit more reach. A few things to see if I can get tests with anyway before I make the decision which way to go with it but suffice to say it's definitely given me a new lease of life for wildlife photography!

@@LeighWPhotos there are no bad choices these days as far as lens capabilities. Every setup has pros and cons and the patient practitioner can figure out work arounds to maximize their success rate. I shot Canon professional cameras for a decade for event work but started moving my personal photography to m43 in 2012 with the E-M5. Ten years later I’m just as excited as I was back then and the OM-1 is also just as ground breaking in today’s camera world as the E-M5 was in 2012. (I actually have never NOT owned at least one Olympus camera since 1974 with the original OM-1 sitting on a shelf in my collection of family cameras going beck to the 19th century!) All the best. You will find yourself having more fun with this system and it will revive the old passion for photography. Thanks for sharing your comments and impressions.

Get the 12-100mm pro (it's amazing/sync is) and the 100-400mm and your set. Get a fast pro lens 1.2 or 1.4 (if you need it). I'm going for the om 20mm f1.4 and eventually 17mm F1.2.

100-400mm is definitely on my radar. Just want to see if I can get a test drive of one first as the 300mm Pro is also looking very tempting for it's sync is ability.

@@LeighWPhotos if you know you are only going to shoot at 300mm it's great. The 1.4x and 2x are great with it image quality wise. It does get very hard to track with 1200mm equivalent focal length. The sync IS on the 300mm f4 is amazing. I shot elks in very windy conditions that were knocking my camera and lens around. I still got very nice shots. Impressive really. If I could I would get myself the 150-400mm F4 pro lol. That's the dream
@LeighWPhotos

Definitely going to see if I can get a trial with the 300mm pro - I tend to only shoot at the longer end for wildlife so it might be the one to go for. As long as the weight isn't too much to carry around for me! The 150-400 would be amazing, but then I'd need an assistant to carry it around for me :D
