One thing about modern Omega that I appreciate is how the wearers REALLY use it as a daily driver. I respect this a lot. My dentist is a die hard omega guy and his watches look like hell.

I respect your dentist, these watches should be bought, kept, and USED. A scratch here and there is only a indicator of its story. This is why for me, I prefer to buy new. I wish to have the experience of wearing the watch from its birth and let it shape through out its life. At the end of the day . Its just a watch. A very expensive watch haha.

I have an early Aqua Terra with the 2500 coaxial movement. The proportions are spot on, it really works as the one watch, but the movement is a bit sensitive. I find the newer ones a shade too beefy, more on the sports watch end of things because of the thicker 8000 calibers. Although the movements are better.

I own the Skyfall AT. Very similar to this model with the offset case and vertical grooves on the dial, but it has a framed date window and a fully brushed bracelet. It has not disappointed. It’s both versatile and fascinating to look at (i.e. not boring). It’s a watch I hope to own for a very long time.

I bought the Skyfall Aqua Terra for my 30th Birthday. My first Swiss Watch. Its a stunning watch as the blue dial really Pops and the polished hour markers and hands sparkle beautifully. Just bought the 3861 Moon watch as my second swiss watch and it’s amazing but not as beautiful as the Aqua Terra.

Wonderful video, and totally agree with you. I've also noticed something special about Omega's brushed surfaces, they somehow just look a cut above in a subtle, understated way, and don't show scratches easily. It's one of the main reasons my Speedy and SMP300 are my most frequent daily wears, along with the METAS criteria. Omega has really walked the line so well of elegant enough to feel refined, while sporty to the core.

Oh, and thanks for bringing out the detail on the indices. I'd noticed on the AT they really do pop and have noticeable light play, but had never seen them up close or with that explanation as to why.

Would you choose this one over GS? Trying to decide on another watch and it can't be a Rolex due to security reasons. I have Rolex, Seiko(unfortunately needs service) and Atlantic. Got promoted 2 times in a year, bought new car and house and awaiting for son to come nxt year so this would be celebration piece
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot Жыл бұрын
Congrats man, hope the next year will be as good as this year! So deciding between the two is super hard bc both look and feel incredible but in very different ways. Depends on which GS you're thinking of getting, but on the whole I feel like GS is on the dressier side of daily wearable watches where as the Aqua Terra is a bit more balanced. So if you have the dressy side of watches covered by your other watches then maybe the AT would be better but if not then a GS could work well. In the end it's all about how you feel about them physically on your wrist and how you feel about the other worldly GS polishing! Which way are you leaning?
@nash9625
@nash9625 Жыл бұрын
@Uglybeard depends on the GS but they..are..in..credible. Seriously I have a skyflake I bought an oem brushed GS bracelet for too and it is over the top - I would also categorize myself as a huge omega fan but these watches are just incredible. The hardest part is deciding which GS. AT is a great 1 watch collection but if you want something a bit more unique GS is badass.

19mm lug width is not that big of a deal. If the strap isn’t too stiff, a 20mm strap will easily fit. The bracelet and clasp are the issues for me. The shape of the links I don’t like, polished mid links are scratch magnets, and the butterfly clasp offers no micro adjustment or on the fly adjustment. The thickness of the case isn’t great but I can get over it since it doesn’t seem to wear thick. The clasp alone kills the watch for me. I’m also just not a fan of the overall design, even if the quality is insanely good.

Actually the practical advantages of modern 32xx Rolex movements smoke coaxials unless the insane 15K gauss rating is important to you for your job (all modern Rolexes are highly antimagnetic too, but Rolex doesn’t say to what degree) so your title is the other way around. 10 year service interval vs 5 years, advantage Rolex. +/-2 vs 0/+5, accuracy advantage Rolex. 3 day power reserve on all 32xx movements vs 60 hours for the dual-barreled AT/PO, 55 hours for other coaxes…advantage Rolex - and they do it with a single barrel. I owned the exact same AT, and it’s a fine watch…but practically speaking the only plus I’d give it is the jump-hour (and even then, some people would rather a quickset date instead). That being said I’d take it over an Exp (I did), purely for subjective reasons. Sold it down the line and picked up a last-gen Milgauss, which to me wears a bit better even though it’s technically not as impervious to magnetism as the AT. Love the comparison but don’t go down the road of clickbait titles my man.

I‘ve got the titanium model with the white dial and the blue hands. Beautiful watch, lightweight and comfortable to wear. The only thing I don‘t like is the lume of the minute hand. I like the way you present the comparison of these 2 watches. Excellent video. I think too that AT is better than rolex but there is one major deal breaker for me. It's still an expansive watch. Maybe I belong to middle income group of people so it doesn't make any sense to spend so much on a mechanical watch and to strap huge amount of cash on my wrist to walk around letting people see. I have the Tag Heuer Carrera that also has the butterfly clasp, have the exact same functions and purpose as the AT and datejust, but at a much affordable cost. IMO, the Carrera is a more sensible purchase over the AT and rolex 😁

Thank you so much! Glad to hear that you enjoyed the video! Yeah no doubt that the AT and the equivalent rolex watches are pricey, and while they can justify their price tags, they arent the only ways to have fun in the watch world! I used to own a time and date Carrera on the leather strap and i enjoyed it very much and honestly the vast majority of the time I'm enjoying the sub $1000 to sub $500 price points bc thats where most of the interesting stuff is anyway!

The Aqua Terra without doubt is a very handsome watch, with an excellent movement. But that case and bracelet, being largely highly polished, looks terribly scratched up. Ok, a couple of things which you missed - 1) The Omega butterfly clasp has no micro-adjust the Explorer has Easylink, 2) the 8500 movement may have a jumping hour hand but it has no quickset date, 3) the lume on AT is small and weak. Also, from a personal preference perspective the 38.5mm AT looks too thick to me. Finally, I owned an 8500 AT and the movement broke within a year. So not a convincingly better watch IMO.
@thewatchidiot
@thewatchidiot Жыл бұрын
Lol the entire last section of the video is about the AT bracelet being solid but how the oyster bracelet is better! But as for the lack of a quickset date, I can't think of any crown controlled independent jumping hour hand (flyer GMT) movements with a quickset date as well, including Rolex, Tudor, and Grand Seiko GMT movements. So since the 8500 is basically a flyer GMT without a 24 hour hand, the lack of a quickset date isnt a big deal since it's never been a feature on the flyer GMT watches I've owned. I do wish there was more lume but not at the expense of those incredible indices tho! Sorry to hear that the movement in your AT broke but this is my brother in law's watch that he's been using for 5 years without any issues and of all the omega watches my friends and I have owned over the years we haven't had any issues so I can only speak to our good experiences with the brand!

The AT always felt busy to me, how they cramp a whole bunch of design into that dial, could never get over the sharpened indices. As a huge fan of Omega, (I own a few, including the the Seamaster 300M), I have a major beef with this watch; or rather Omega's marketing/naming of it.... Why on earth have they named the Aqua Terra a Seamaster? To my mind this is where they often slip up against Rolex. It should have simply been named the 'Omega Aqua Terra'.
