I agree with Leo Major that Montgomery was incompetent. He was not fit to pin a medal on a man like this. Just look up the debacle that was operation Market Garden. He got OVER 10,000 allied soldiers BUTCHERED because he wouldn't listen to intelligence that there were Panzer divisions in the area & that the paratroopers were being dropped too far from the objective, over 8 miles away from it in fact!! It's worth reading up on. Or if you want a dramatized version, the movie "A bridge too far" is about Operation market garden & the ensuing slaughter.

The Korean saga has Leo Major attached to 2 PPCLI. This battalion along with the Aussies and New Zealanders were awarded a presidential Unit Citation. PPCLI has 3 Presidential Citations and they are not American.

@@tomjones2121 Actually that is very true, there are quite a few war movies based on actual events that minimize or eliminates the Canadian roll, look up the real story on The Great Escape and then watch the movie, Canadians played a big roll in that event but in the movie the only mention of a Canadian is when one gets slapped around by an Aussie, there are many more examples. Having said all that it's not up to Hollywood to tell Canadian stories that is something that Canadian film makers should be doing.

It is sad that Leo Major was not taught in school. I only learned about him a few years ago and am so proud to call him Canadian but also dismayed there are no monuments to this man. A well-funded movie would be amazing too. In Korea Leo and 18 men under his command took and held that position against 12,000 Chinese soldiers. 12,000 for real

@@CountryLifestyle2023 Audie Murphy single handedly stopped a Nazi company at the Colmar Pocket for an hour (at one point firing from the turret of a flaming tank about to explode) as the Nazis retreated a wounded Murphy linked back up with his soldiers and personally lead the counter attack despite being low on ammo, wounded and (according to some accounts) suffering from malaria. He was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor 🏅

He's now sold as a french-canadian hero by Quebec nationalists⚜️🤩 (We have so few). He's call "Le Rambo québécois". The reason there's no movie on him is that is french-canadian and that will boost nationalist among white people. That's not possible in a "post national state" (Trudeau) with multiculturalism (communitarianism for non Canadian readers).

Leo actually went AWOL from the hospital, after he fractured his ankles/back, for like a month, and hole-up with a Belgian family, think it was (who likely helped him escape the hospital, considering he could probably only crawl at that point)...Word is, he had a girl friend, might have been Belgian or Dutch? There are conflicting accounts... Then he just magically reappears with his unit... No reprimand, nothing... The COs are like, 'Leo you're back, eh?... That's good'...

Leo Major has never been given the recognition he truly deserves. His story needs to be taken up, and told to people as part of Canadian history. Another great Canadian story is The black Watch Snipers, recommend you give it a watch.

I would propose that because he was Quebecois there is less support in making a movie about him. Just as Angelina Jolie made the movie 'Unbroken' about Louis Zamperini, someone should make a movie about this man. [Unfortunately, I think who ever would make this movie would turn it into an unbelievable, hagiographic film of a brave, oppressed French Canadian instead of viewing him as one of the bravest & most effective soldiers of WW2 & Korean War, who, by the way, was French Canadian.]

The actor was Lee Majors. The character was Steve Austin. He was based on a real-life test pilot, Bruce Peterson, who was badly injured in the crash of an experimental lifting body in 1967 that would lead to the development of the Space Shuttle.

Haha Canadians in war is a whole other thing. There’s stories from WW2 that show we are still polite - eg carefully escorting German people out of whole towns - then burning the town down as revenge for the killing of a fellow Canadian soldier

The truly remarkable thing is that this is all completely true. No embellishments were needed to make this an amazing story. It's well documented in military dispatches. Furthermore, Leo went home never mentioning his exploits even to his wife. As a matter of fact when the Dutch Prime Minister paid a visit to Canada, he demanded of our Prime Minister P.E. Trudeau, to meet Leo and even Trudeau didn't know the story. Leo's wife was even more confused about all the fuss as she knew nothing of any of it.

I believe there is a statue of Leo in the city of Zwolle. The Dutch sent a government delegation to his funeral and his wife, who had never heard Leo talk about his WW2 and Korean exploits, had no idea why they would be there or why the Dutch press would be interested in him. Imagine her surprise at hearing all this.

The Quebec government only recently acknowledged Leo Major---finally. In Canada we prefer to erect monuments to communists like Normann Bethune than Leo Major. To be fair, Major went to war only to prove to his unloving dad that he was a real man. There was a strong isolationist movement among French Canadians in both WWI and WWII. Major was a very low key person. Never bragged. Never uttered a peep. (incidentally he was born in the USA!)

Check out the Black Devils and Tommy Prince, The Black Devils were what the Germans called them but First Special Service Force or FSSF is the official name. It was a WW2 Commando unit made up of Canadian Commando with mountaineering skills and the best of the best of USA new recruits. This unit is what led to the Navy Seals, Green Beret, our JTF2 ect. globally. Canada had already been in the war for nearly 2 years when the US decided to stop supplying the Nazis and join us for the Win. The Devils were formed specifically to take Italy and fortified mountain positions in Italy. FYI this UNIT received the Congressional Gold Medal among MANY others but look up the Congressional Gold Medal.

@@SilentStorm4U There was a separatist movement in the french province of Canada (Québec) that led to what is known as the October crisis in 1970. Diplomats were kidnapped and one of em was killed. The prime Minister invoked the war measures act and eventually the second diplomat was released. Following these events two referendums about sovereignty were held. Québec stayed part of Canada but to this day there is political group dedicated to making Québec a country of it's own. Kids in Québec are not really taught about the October crisis nowadays but kids in Ontario (the neighboring province) do learn about it... this and other things are being seen by some has means to keep those discussions buried and Québécois's pride... I wouldn't say in check but you know not high enough to reignite those ideas of grandeur. Hopefully you get the idea. There is a lot more to it then just what I wrote here...

The only time the military was brought in, was to deal with Quebec....who we cater to like a spoiled child....tired of them winning and complaining that Quebec is targeted, not treated fairly, oppressed.....fuck off and leave if you feel like that. speaking of one eyed so I am sitting in a resturant eating, when a lady sitting nearby when all the sudden she seem to be choking on her food she stood up and was caughing and gagging, something flew toward me and by reflex I caught it. Looking into my hand I notice it was a glass eye, I returned to the lady and she thanked me. Later as I was paying for my food. the cashier said that my meal was paid for by the lady, she was still there so I went and told her she didn't have to pay for my meal. He just happens not to be from an English origin and will always be an outcast from the Canadian army. I was in the Canadian army for 6 years and the only ever "thank you for your services I ever got was from an American.. Thank you English Canada for your support...
