I bought a new film camera, as I am want to do from time to time. This camera changed my perspective on point an shoot film cameras. One of my favorite genres of film camera is the premium point and shoot. A compact film camera, with great build quality, simple controls and a sharp lens. The only trouble for you and I thought is that with film photography's recent comeback, cameras like the Contax T2, the Leica C1, or the Ricoh GR are all becoming prohibitively expensive. In this video I talk about the merits of premium point and shoot cameras and show you a few that are worth looking at buying.

My current film P&S is the Nikon L35AF2. All plastic and lightweight, but I've been pretty happy with the images.

Other notable mentions that have a prime lens and autofocus: Konica Hexar AF with 35mm f/2 Fujifilm Klasse W with 28mm f/2.8 Fujifilm Klasse S with 38mm f/2.8 Fujifilm Natura Black with 24mm f/1.9 However, if I were to bring a camera on a trip with kids, the camera I would bring would be the Konica Genba Kantoku (現場監督) It's seldom mentioned in the West, but most Asian film photographers would know about it.

Just got the Konica and was impressed with the shots I got from my first roll. And it's dead simple to use.

You mentioned the G1 - I just shot my first roll of Vision 3 and Kodak gold 200 on my new to me Contax G1 today - I cant wait to see what my scans give me back. Thanks - great video.

Hey dude , great videos man. You definitely need to get yourself a rollei 35 man it’s so good and possibly smaller than the t2 👍. Keep on shooting on.

I had a Minolta Freedom Zoom 140ex that I found for $5. I was amazed at how good the images were. I sold it because I felt film was too expensive for point and shoot. I got a amazing point and shoot digital that don't eat my film. If you go with a point and shoot film camera just make sure you like the results enough to feed it film (which these days it true of all film cameras).

I’m sure one of the things you LOVE, and by love I mean loathe, when you have a list of cameras you recommend is putzes like me saying, “but what about”??!! But if you are talking premium point-n-shoots I would put images from a Nikon 28ti or 35ti up against your Contax T2 all day any day. And you gotta admit the styling on the Nikon with the aviator style display is cool AF! Also mentioned a few times in the comments is the Konica Big Mini. That camera punches WAY above its weight! Wished I wouldn’t have sold mine. 😞

I have also unhealthy obsession with 90s premium point & shoots. I think they are overpriced but not overhyped. My favourite camera is Leica Minilux. The viewfinder sucks big time but the 40mm F2.4 lens is excellent for the size.

My hope is that the new cameras from Mint/Rollei and Pentax really aim at those 90s premium point and shoots. They will range between 600-900$ but I think they should be able to pull it off. In technological development we have over 30 years of evolution behind us. Theoretically with more automation it should be possible to achieve.

As somebody that currently has 3 contax G1’s, sold a t2, and has had multiple Olympus point and shoots, the best point and shoot camera is: A cheap canon rebel in auto mode with a 40mm 2.8 EF pancake lens. It’s a cheap but good camera, tiny, and the lens will work on other Canons…and the 40mm pancake is absolute fire and can be sold if the camera body were to die. Can’t do that with a true point and shoot.

My favorite that I've settled on is a Nikon F80 with a fannypack carrying one alternate lens. I carry a 24 2.8D and a 50 1.8G, both "compact" lenses. This setup gives me a fairly compact package, good selection of focal lengths, a feature rich camera with decent metering and autofocus, and the lenses are sharp as hell and somewhat fast. Also it's basically a point and shoot with the AF and aperture priority.

One film point and shoot that I've always been impressed by is the Konica Big Mini 301. Build quality can be flimsy but I've seen absolute keepers from my friends online shot with the camera. Visually very pleasing as well.

I'd like to mention that I've had a hell of a good time recently with my Pentax Espio 120SW. Super Super small (pocket of all sizes friendly) and honestly the AF is good. Great little adventure camera, great photos. I got it super cheap as well

I have a Konica Big Mini F which has a very sharp f/2.8 prime lens, and the camera itself is tiny. I’m going to invest in a Fujifilm Klasse S or W soon, which is arguably the most modern point and shoot (ceased production in 2012 I think)

Totally agree! That's why even my main medium format camera (the Fuji GA645 Professional) is basically a point and shoot camera (not pocketable, but very compact too!)...

Isn’t the f 2.8 actually an auto aperture mode that CAN go as low as 2.8 but it doesn’t force it to 2.8? That’s why I decided to go with the Contax G2

I had a contax tvs, loved it so so much, until 1 month later the ribbon cable behind the lens broke, and the camera is dead. Also it was too expensive to repair so i had to let it go. Since then i refuse to own any premium point and shoots with retractable lens.😂 I am living a peaceful life with my Konica Hexar AF now.

LOL, yeah maybe if I ever win piles of money in the lottery. What we need is more hype for them to make them even MORE expensive… I’ll stick with my SLR’s that I can afford, and are probably more reliable anyway.

2:50 Is there manual focus? When you say you can just take a picture. My gripe with most point and shoots is that their auto-focus *always* makes me having to wait too long.
@Overexposed1

It has manual focus but it’s electronic, and you have to gauge the distance and use a setting on the selector knob.

@@Overexposed1 Thanks! Good to know. IMO point and shoots devolved when auto focus became a thing. Before you had to (or: were able to) zone focus and then all of a sudden for most models you had to rely on the auto focus all the time.
