Same here. But i do admit that the way how katara yelled at sokka by saying "then you didn't love her the way i did!!" That was just messed up in her part, her mother was also's sokka's mother! Her mother got murdered by a cruel fire nation soldier who showed no mercy. I really loved this episode for two reasons, this ep showed zuko finally proving his loyalty by helping katara find the man who killed her mom, and most importantly is aang saying a powerful message about forgiveness.

Idk if you watched Naruto but Sasuke does this verbatim to Kakashi, and kakashi was like “boy I been an orphan before it was cool” lol it’s just what ppl who experience trauma often do so I just think it’s good writting. Most of those people (from ATLA) didn’t have their loved ones violently murdered directly in front of them, so while they can relate to the loss of a loved one they cannot relate to that level of trauma but as this video mentions there’s always a reason doesn’t mean it’s an excuse. Katara needs help with coming to terms, processing her emotions and becoming at peace with the murder of her mother and at that time that peace she so desperately craved she believed would come from murdering that old man. She just needed help understanding and finding a healthier way of doing so, but they were all children and she needed a delicate voice to not trigger and tbh none of them not even Sokka was equipped for that.

@@schecidnavarrete3036 Back in the southern raiders episode, back in 2008, I never understood why everyone was surprised and startled by Katara’s revenge intention. Why should Katara being full of rage surprise us? Why, because throughout the show we are shown how loving she is? I didn’t think anything of that crap because no matter who you are, everyone has a dark side; even the nicest of people; shouldn’t all of us know that? Everyone is complex. Back when I was 7, I had a reading tutor who would hit me with a hammer anytime I got a question wrong, at 14 in 2008, I was punched in the jaw by my aunt for something I didn’t do, and when I came back home from school to complain about the bullying I was experiencing, my aunts and grandparents did absolutely nothing, I suffered in silence of no one wanting to hear me out and you know what my principal told me? How is it after everything you went through, you remain respectful to all the elders and teachers at my school and never get into trouble at school and never showed any abusive behavior towards women? Back then I remember thinking what kind of stupid question that because my problems has nothing to do with others and it’s not right to be mad at others for my problems because they aren’t the center or cause of it. People are complex, I am complex and you don’t know what goes on people. Katara’s quest for revenge is nothing to be surprised about; we all have a duality. This should be expected.
@avadrause55764 жыл бұрын
The reason that she annoys me is because she undermines everyone else’s issues and puts her own above them. For example Zuko very rarely brings up how it wasn’t his fault what his dad did or how much he lost during the war but accepts the hatred he gets just for his blood and you do not see him lashing out at other people for things they can’t control. But when Katara does it she places her issue above all others.
@avadrause55764 жыл бұрын
Also i’m not trying to defend Zuko because he did do bad things that can’t just be forgotten, but I am saying he was physically and mentally abused by his own father just so his father could gain power and constantly watched him praise Azula when is just another form of mental abuse yet he never uses this as an excuse during the show even when it would be valid just as how Katara wouldn’t annoy me as much is she didn’t use it as an excuse for hate and anger and made others issues insignificant compared to hers which in itself is mentally abusive if you truly think about it but to a lesser scale. Imagine your mother dies and then your sister tells you that your feelings aren’t valid because you don’t want to act in revenge and anger and that you don’t deserve an opinion in the matter because you couldn’t have loved her if you felt any other way besides her own. That’s messed up and though the show doesn’t show it in real life that would leave a lasting effect no matter how mature you are because it makes you question your own feelings all because of her need for revenge.

Katara is definitely a well written character, and a realistic one. But it felt undeserved for Katara who up until this point was that caring mom-friend, to automatically just get forgiven. Sokka was older he knew their mom longer, he had a close relationship with their mom. And Katara just shut that down, and then when she gets her feelings sorted out. She doesn’t even apologize. Not once. The once caring and mom friend and close sister doesn’t apologize. Zuko changes, everyone changes. Except her, why?

Yes No I don’t agree. Throughout the whole series Katara is completely insensitive and oblivious to everyone else’s trauma just because of her own. I also don’t like how she treats Toph in the beginning. Although Toph started off rocky Katara should’ve understood that Toph hasn’t really ever worked in a team before. She should also understand that Toph just got away from her clingy parents and isn’t looking for a new mom. I believe Katara let’s her feelings get in the way of the mission which she agreed to help with. She constantly goes off on her own missions because of her “need to help” and just distracts everyone from the main goal. I was furious in the pirate episode when she stole the scroll for “Anng” . I am also mad that she gets mad at Anng for learning water bending to quickly. She also masters water bending and blood bending way too quickly for it to just be skill. It was the writers who quickly made her OP for the sake of the plot. Going back to my point earlier, Katara acts like she has it the worst of all the characters because her mom died. She invalidates everyone else’s trauma and talks about her own way too much in my opinion. Zhukov definitely had the most trauma when it comes to family but you don’t see him using it as an excuse to act out. In the end he changes for the better and helps team avatar. Katara doesn’t change at all in the series and just holds everyone back. I don’t like her as a character and prefer Toph much more because she doesn’t baby the avatar and gets what need to be done, done without a whole story. In the end I believe Katara blames a lot of her shenanigans on her mother’s death which is just one of the things that bothers me the most about her.
Aang grew up without a family as a monk who denounced worldly attachment. It's why he was fine despite the loss because he already established far closer ties with his new family. He really doesn't understand.

And tophs own parents treated her as if she was helpless and hid her away from the world because they were ASHAMED of her. Sure Katara faced trauma, but so did everyone else in the gaang. :(

Personally, I think Katara says that because in 'The Runaway' Sokka admits to Toph that he cannot remember what their mother looks like, and unbeknownst to Sokka and Toph, Katara overhears this. Almost everything you see in this show finds a way to be tied back in later and becomes more significant than you originally think it is. Another example of this is in 'The Chase' when Toph (rightfully) blames Appa's shedding for Azula being able to follow them so easily, and then in 'The Desert' Aang irrationally explodes at Toph for not saving Appa and even saying "You never liked Appa! You Just wanted him gone!". Whenever there is conflict between the main characters, it never just comes out of nowhere; a small seed is planted, and later on it begins to sprout and we see the consequences. The writing of this show is absolutely genius, nothing is wasted and everything we see almost always has some purpose.

Toph was born blind and her paretns were treating her as a weak child in need of protection that can't do anything on it's own, hiding her the world from her. Zuko's dad wanted to kill him to become the Fire lord and left a permanent scar on his face, as a reminder of his pain and embarassment, that he will wear for the rest od his life, also banishing him from his own country. Aang's whole nation have been killed by the fire nation. Not a single person the same as him. Not a single airbender. All the people he has been in contact with are gone. Everything he knew 100 years ago is no longer the same, expect Bumi who is close to death. Members of the Gaans has it worse than Katara, but never have I heard Aang telling people he has met "Yea...my whole nation has been killed". Kataras whole emotional range is based on her mother's death. And than Soka. Older brother in a close relationship with his family. The fact that he was older at that time must make him feel guilty for not being able to protect his mother. He is not bragging about it like Katara cause he doesn't want to bring back the memories. Just like he said "it is not the day he likes to remember". While Katara boosts her emotinal power and rage by remembering it constantly. And saying that his maturity and the fact that he is not thirsty for ravenge is cause by "not loving his mother enough" is just.. disgusting.

For a child, knowing your mother died for you is pretty scarring. Zuko, Toph, and Aang all went through a lot of messed up stuff that was terrible, but their experiences don’t take away from the fact that Katara felt like she was the reason her mother died. What she said to Sokka was super messed up but she’s just a 14 year old girl. Trauma effects everyone differently and just saying that “they had it worse and they didn’t react like that” erases a) characters personalities: of course they react differently! They’re not the same people. And B) that fact that she went through anything at all. Her father was absent for a lot of her life and she lived in a secluded village in the South Pole. While she was definitely in the wrong in that situation, it’s plain wrong to wash away the stuff she went through by saying other people went through worse. IMO, she’s a well-rounded character and there had to be some moment where she lost her cool a little too much because we saw that buildup throughout the series. Just my opinion, though, and I think your perspective is fair too :)

She's 14 and actually the most empathic character in the show. Sokka admitted that Katara essentially replaced their mother for him and she didn't die for him so there actually was less of a connection there. Also he did want to let a village die. Aang was born as a monk with a culture that prioritized inner peace and detachment with no family. He had a stronger bond with people he had only known for a few weeks. Toph still had her parents. Zuko was actively trying to capture or literally kill them nearly the entire show.

Not @ y'all forgetting she's a kid in the show that never dealt with her trauma properly and had to become a caretaker and head of the family since a young age, never having guidance as to how to heal those emotional wounds along with being a teen makes you, you guessed it, emotionally stunted and immature. I mean personally I do believe Katara is the mature sibling. I feel like his sexist, oblivious, and inconsiderate nature holds him back from being more mature than Katara.
@Dinnos1004 жыл бұрын
Katara and Sokka are simply different. Katara is a very emotional person which at times makes her very stubborn. However, she also is very caring and will not turn her back to people in need. Sokka is a misogynistic douche at the beginning of the show but grows out of that and starts to consider everyone's opinions. He transforms from a boy who wants to play leader to an actual leader, stepping out of his father's shadow.
@VenhedisKaffas4 жыл бұрын
I think both are just mature for their age. No matter how stupid Sokka can appear, there's no doubt he's one of the smartest people on the show. He single-handedly attempted to protect their village after the older men of the village left and there are moments in the show where it's very clear that he's actually the oldest person of the gaang (besides Zuko and Suki eventually). Katara, on the other hand, is younger but was, like Sokka, forced to grow up quickly. She became a mother-figure out of necessity after the death of their mother. Both of them grew up quicker than others their age. I think this is also why the age difference between Katara, Aang and Toph seems so obvious before they all mature more. Aang matures a lot throughout the show but before he was frozen in ice Gyatso tried to make sure Aang could still be a kid and Toph didn't need to grow up quickly because of how she was raised.

My issue, upon rewatch, is that she didn't apologise for her really shitty moments. say what you want, I can understand her being pissed at Aang for being better than her because from experience I was in a lot of situations, and rewatching the series, I could see why Katara got pissed off. What I'm referring to is the blind joke and this mom moment because it killed the mom friend trope for me. Like sure, a lotta people say bad shit when their emotions are boiling over, but fam, you apologise afterwards when you overstep your boundaries. While I respect your decision to assume it was off-screen, I don't like things implied in series. @@ijimenez1951 Katara was honestly less responsible than Sokka, objectively speaking. Her strong point was her empathy, which is why everyone places her in the "mother" role: she connects with a character's pain and understands them (she's basically like Naruto but with a necklace instead of a swing). Meanwhile Sokka has priorities, duties, responsibilities to their goals, diligence, persistence, and is overall thoroughly pragmatic with a taste for plans, schedules, and punctuality. He's a comic relief character so his depth is downplayed for comedy, but he's always the most realistic one out of the group, ironically feeling like the only adult one there (I call it the "Squidward Effect"; I used to think Squidward was boring asf and mean when I was little, but now I vibe with everything he says). Whenever they wanted to stop and have fun Sokka was always reminding them how they didn't have time for fun because of what was at stake, essentially stopping them from being "kids". Whenever they trusted people too easily he was always suspicious, got turned on by Aang and/or Katara multiple times, then was ultimately proven right every time (like with Jet: Aang trusted him *immediately* and Katara was head-over-heels in the first 3 seconds). He was the one responsible for risking his life to find out what day the eclipse would take place on, as well as the one who wanted to get the Earth King's help when everyone else wanted to leave, as well as the one who came up with battle plans for "The Day of Black Sun". Gotta say that out of all the fictional characters that influenced me as a little kid, Katara is pretty high on the list. When I first watched ATLA (as a seven year old girl, a few years after the series ended) there weren't a ton of great female characters in child-friendly media. The female Marvel heroes weren't really fleshed out yet, and Disney had only just started making their princesses into actual developed characters. Most female characters were either tagged with Stupid, Morally Righteous, Nerdy, Mean, or Physically Strong, with no further layers. Katara had more depth to her. She wasn't always likeable (she could be pretty intense), but she also had a more fun, gentler side. She was very smart and a fantastic bender, not because of innate ability, but because she developed those qualities. Her leadership skills were great, and she didn't hesitate to call people out when they were wrong, but she also knew when to be more tactful. Growing up, I generally saw the idea that flawless female characters were "good," while troubled ones were "bad." She had some great qualities, as well as some deep flaws, and was therefore one of the first realistic female fictional role models that I saw. Honestly, that was some really fabulous character design, and while rewatching the show as a teenager, I can really see how she influenced my ideas of how to be a "strong female character" in real life

I think I don't hate Katara there but she was definitely a bitch at that moment. Katara really crosses the line when she's angry and it's understandable but it doesn't make those occurrences okay. I do hope she apologizes every time she upsets someone. I think Kya's death just affected Katara more obviously than Sokka because 1) Sokka and Katara just have different ways of dealing with that loss 2) It got way more up close and personal for Katara. She saw the one who murdered her mother up close before they took her mother and Katara was also the person they were looking for in the first place and she knows that her mother sacrificed herself for her daughter. I do very much like Katara as a character. She has some very obvious flaws built on trauma but also just general personality traits. But she's also just a good person. I feel like most people did not GET the motivation behind Katara's actions in the Southern Raiders ep that's why I see a lot camping here showing their hatred which is childish and questionable. The episode was blunt to throw the message that Katara's behavior was wrong and she herself knew this. But Katara saying "Now that I know he's out there, now that I know we could find him, I feel like I have no choice." speaks volumes on how long she waited for this moment. Kya died for Katara, her mother died for HER. Of course, you can't imagine the grief and GUILT she had to carry growing up while also taking care of Sokka, Gran Gran in her old age, basically her whole family because Hakoda is also away. She hated her father so much for leaving them at the worst time in their young lives yet she understood perfectly why he had to. That's why she broke down in tears after confronting him. Katara has this motherly traits because that's all she's ever had to force herself to build while growing up. She's been holding everyone together since they all met but she messes up for a moment and suddenly she's annoying. For instance, she was on Toph's business at first because Toph wasn't cooperating. Granted, that she left a nice life just to teach Aang was a valid reason but she did not want to get into the dynamics of the team she CHOSE to go with. Of course, Katara would be mad, it's like taking care of a teenager with a mature mindset but doesn't want to act like it. You were all in her business for reprimanding Toph but didn't even compliment her for advicing the earthbender master to try a positive reinforcement teaching method that led to Aang standing his ground and finally earthbending. And the other situation where she held the whole team together in the desert when Appa was taken; Aang was too heartbroken to be rational, Sokka was high, Toph couldn't anything BUT KATARA PULLED THEM THROUGH. Even when Aang was yelling at her, she's composed because she sympthatized with him, she felt him. That's why she wasn't shocked and scared that Aang subconsciously entered the avatar state after confronting the sandbenders. She's always trying to see the world in her team's perspective while weighing it with her own. She misunderstands them time to time but at the end of the day, she's always self-reflecting and chooses to take the high-ground by reconciling with them. I am saying this because Katara completely being taken over with the idea of getting revenge on her mother's killer and undermining her morality for a while was, in fact, UNDERSTANDABLE for her character. She's wrong, but that's a given. She's so morally composed that she had to HAVE a FLAW. She's difficult to win over after being wronged because she put her TRUST on people that even endangered her life. She did not trust Zuko right away because he helped Azula and his decision ultimately led to Aang's death. How is that difficult to digest? It should've been given that she'd make it difficult for him BUT she had all the right to do so. Her deciding to go on a travel alone with a man she didn't trust SHOULD have given you ideas how MUCH she wanted that day to come. She got an opportunity and anything in the way to get that would be put on the spot by her. Sokka did not deserve the words Katara said to him but that statement was an emotional outburst because she thought Sokka would agree with her but he did not. Although they're both her children, it's obvious that their GRIEF WAS DIFFERENT. Sokka achieved his closure long ago and started seeing Katara in their mother's place but Katara had to be in this position where her morals were questioned after finding out that the reason for her inner grievances and struggle was out there and she had to take this journey and face him to finally realize that the version of herself facing him now is someone who is too strong to NOT take the life of someone who ruined her. At the end of the day, she learned to forgive and not forgive, Zuko and Yon Rha. This is why it's the ending of her arc.

You said everything that needed to be said. The amount of people still getting mad at her and making fun of her really irks me. And saying they like Toph better because she's "tough girl" makes her seems better the Katara (from what I gather in the comments) since she doesn't "complain" she's a better character then Katara. When really Toph also let's her emotions and immaturity get to her too. She avoided the team's warnings about Zuko and got her feet burned. Even if that was an accident she did it without informing the team and could've been in a even worse position if Katara wasn't there to heal her. I love all the characters and a the mistakes they go through and learn from. Characters don't ALWAYS have to be good or in the right to still be compelling and likable. I can still like Sokka even though he use to be a sexist asshole. I can still like Aang even though his anger towards the gang and his reactions to enemies when Appa was stolen was extreme. I can still like Zuko even tho he is in fact a colonizer and contributed to the genocide and tyranny of the fire nation. And I can still like and even understand Katara because during that episode she's holding back her extreme anger at the guy who tried (and almost succeeded) in killing Aang, he invaded her home and destroyed villages and who knows what else during his conquest (and his family conquests) And his betrayal that really crippled her trust. She's allowed to be angry, shes allowed to be emotionally angry (and I dont see ANY of yall complaining about zukos betrayal and Aangs almost murderous behavior in the desert).

We need to remember that Katara is younger then Sokka. The younger kids need their mother more than older, especially when Sokka had his father as a warrior idol for him, so his mother wasn't that important. Sokka said that when he try to remember his mother he sees Katara face, becouse she took her role. But who was a mother for Katara? I feel most ppl watching this show forget that these are children who grew with war and rage. But Zuko was also a character who had immense flaws, I remember when he would always blow up on Uncle Iroh, even though he knew he loved and cared for him. So why is it that the one moment where Katara is also pushed to an emotional edge any different? Katara is just a very emotional person, and that has its good and bad sides, which makes her a GOOD character. You don’t have to have her as your favorite, but I hate when ppl try to argue she’s poorly written or “too much”.

@mj22084 жыл бұрын
let’s not compare trauma... trauma is in the eyes of the beholder. the severity of it is a completely personal thing, and not something for outsiders to judge as “not as bad.” What she said was wrong but try to have empathy for her situation. She lost her mother at a young age because her mother sacrificed herself for katara. Katara knew this and most definitely had some survivors guilt. she didn’t know the exact reason why her mom sacrificed herself until later but still. She was forced to become a mother to Sokka’s at age 8. Her childhood was robbed from her. Yes sokka went through the same loss but it’s important to understand that everyone deals with loss and grieves differently. Her grief made her feel isolated and angry whereas sokka put all his energy into being a warrior. They both never had time to process their grief and trauma and because of kataras grieving processes, that left her with a lot of nasty emotions thus causing her to say those things. Hating her isn’t the right response to what she did.

I think “that” line is meant to show just how tunneled Katara’s vision gets when she thinks of revenge. Her saying that Sokka wouldn’t relate to her pain is such a baffling moment, because with even a split second of thought the entire statement falls apart. Same thing with Aang, since he is the last survivor of a mass genocide. Factually, she is wrong on all levels and crossed a line she shouldn’t have. So, why did she say it? She is normally a very empathetic person, so it is almost out of character for her. But the thing is, we are seeing her at her lowest mental point so far in the series. We are seeing what she has kept inside her all these years and it’s surging out all at once. Katara acts cruelly to Sokka and Aang because for so many years, she internalized her hatred as the way she grieves for her mother. She wrongfully concludes that Sokka didn’t love their mother as much as she did since he didn’t seem to have the same internal hatred as her. That’s why it’s such a huge deal when she lets her anger out all at once during the rain scene, because once she does she is able to see clearly again. She was able to see that killing would not do anything, and even if she didn’t forgive the killer she kept her integrity till the end. As much as “that” line makes me cringe because of how awful it is to say to someone, it does a great way to establish how aggressive and vindictive she can be at her worst. It isn’t until she releases her anger was she able to act as her true self, rather than a vessel for her revenge. My biggest gripe is that Katara 100% should have apologized to Aang and Sokka for belittling their hardships. Even if it was as simple as a hug, or a “I’m sorry,” it would have been better than nothing. I don’t know if they ran out of time because Katara had to reconcile with Zuko or what, but it is a little strange that such a heavy moment early in the episode is left hanging indefinitely.

At what point did Katara belittle Aang or Sokka’s hardships in that conversation? All she said to Aang is that “he wouldn’t understand” and to an extent she is correct. Aang never grew up with a mother or a father, and whilst his people were indeed killed, he wasn’t present for that traumatising event. Katara actually saw her mother’s killer and what was left of her mother after she had been killed. Not to mention that Kya died to protect Katara, not Sokka. After Kya’s death is was Katara who took on all her responsibilities like the cooking, cleaning, sewing and even town midwifery. She even helped Sokka hunt as well. Comparitively, the loss of their mother had a much more profound effect on Katara’s life than Sokka, since she had to be strong and mature for him in that situation. Of course I’m sure Sokka loves their mother just as much, however I do see Katara’s point. Not to mention that it’s rich of Aang to get all high and mighty with Katara about “not seeking revenge”. Which is what she knew would happen and why she said “I knew you wouldn’t understand” because she knew Aang wouldn’t be understanding of her need to face the man who killed her mother. Which is ironic when he got to have his revenge on the sandbenders after kidnapping Appa, and also blew Katara and Sokka off the mountainside after discovering what happened to Gyatso.

It honestly didnt shock me when i first watched it. Mind you, i was 14/15 when i first watched the show. I had been forced to take the maternal role for my two sisters when i was 12, and no one seemed to care about them or their safety except me. So when she blew up at sokka for not loving their mother THE SAME WAY she did (not that he didnt, just that it wasnt the same), i related to that. My mother would constantly complain to other people that she did everything and we were lazy when in reality i was raising my sisters, taking care of our mother, and trying to keep them from killing eachother because one of my sisters and our mother were bat-shit psychotic. Katara was forced to step up and act like a mom to sokka. In an earlier episode, he even admits he cant remember their mother. That when he tries, all he sees is katara. Dispite being the younger sibling, maybe even because of it, she held onto the vision of their mother with a tighter grip than he did. Listen to her again. "You didnt love mom THE WAY i did." Not accusing him of NOT loving their mother. Just stating a fact that, while yes was hurtful, was still a fact. And we could argue that the only reason hes the more mature of the two is because katara gave up learning to be an adult to make sure he got all of the life lessons. Being forced to be the parent, she ignored what she needed to be mature to make sure he had he opportunity to get what he needed. This is the one time she breaks. The one time she needs something, and they try to tell her no. Ang didnt even ask if she was wanting revenge, he immediately assumed that just because she felt like she wanted to kill this man that she would follow through without question. Undermining her and her true character.

comparing other people’s trauma is not ok to do, just because other people have experienced more pain and deaths in their life than the other person does not mean they don’t have the right to still be traumatized. everyone handles situations/traumas differently, that’s why katara and sokka had completely different affects. this makes her characters actually pretty realistic. i mean yeah, what she did say to sokka wasn’t right and was completely uncalled for, but ever since her mom died she had to take on the motherly figure without a choice and no one could tell her what she was doing right or wrong. she didn’t even grieve properly as hakoda had to leave after her mother’s death which made her angry.

Honestly, Katara is suppose to be one of the most compassionate characters on this show but I didnt see that until later in book 3. I can understand her feelings, but that seems to be that's mostly what it's about: HER feelings. She can feel some sympathy for others, but not empathy. She mainly understands people's feelings based off of her misfortune, but not understand their pain as if she were having them herself. Like, how Aang was actually understanding Katara's feelings as if he were experiencing her feelings himself, while she accused Aang of all people for not understanding hers. You mean the boy who lost not just a whole clan, but a whole race!? WTF Katara!? Aang tried to coax Katara about dealing with her issues and she tried to make him feel better about killing someone and got frustrated when he walked off. And that was after her confrontation with her mother's killer. She couldn't bring herself to kill that man either. Aang is a child who lost a whole entire race, and was forcfully dragged into fighting a war and was expected to abandon all morality to commit homicide and she tells him he doesn't understand HER pain and gets frustrated with him when he was experiencing anxiety and stormed off. Screw Sokka's feelings, screw her dad's feelings (and he had to go to war not too long after his wife's death), and screw Aang's feelings and everyone else's feelings, because if she's feeling bad, well then you don't want her to feel bad. I don't want to trash on a tragic character for their trauma and who didn't learn to cope with it in a healthy manner, that's not what I'm trying to do. Though trauma is an explanation, not an excuse. It isn't excusable for horrid behavior towards people who basically experienced trauma as well and are trying to cope with the pain themselves, not just her. Her trauma gives reasons for her actions, but those reasons are still ultimately selfish. I don't like how she is constantly excused for her behavior. Even towards those who did her no wrong. Sometimes it feels like she ignores other people's problem and would rather focus on her own personal issues. Now don't get me wrong, I love characters that aren't perfect. I love characters with flaws, but most of all, I love characters who acknowledge these flaws. I did start appreciating her more after this episode and I'm happy for her when she was given closure after facing her mom's killer. Especially the part where she coaxed Zuko to talk to his uncle for the first time in a long time and put Azula in her place.

@Elio yeah. It's like a person with a small splinter in their finger tells a man with a cluster of swords in his back, "you don't understand my pain", but the man with the cluster of swords in his back actually shows empathy towards them since, wouldn't you know it, they actually experienced that pain tenfold. After the Southern Raiders episode, I really didn't like Katara as much as I once did...pretty much for all you said. I don't like how she treated her dad in the first episode of Season 3 either. She was giving her dad sharp answers and being rude to him, and when Aang asked if she was angry with her dad, she was oblivious to her own behavior! She made up and explained her anger, but sheesh...the directors sometimes made Katara act awfully selfish whenever her feelings were hurt.

Katara's my second favourite character in the series after Azula but she was a total bitch for several episodes in Season 3. Most of her bitchiness was aimed at Zuko but what she said to Sokka was inexcusable. They should have shown her apologising because that was a terrible thing to say and could have permanently damaged her relationship with her brother.

Katara's haters need to stop... In recent years with the new generation of avatar viewers, an alarming amount of unnecessary hatred towards Katara has grown, at first I did not give it a mind as they only made fun of Katara mentioning her mother a lot similar to how some people made fun of of Zuko's honor, but then they began to spawn comments about how Katara was annoying everywhere for no reason, they just left that there and left, and in these times a genuine hatred for Katara has arisen (whose reasons are very pathetic and can quickly contradict) the first reason for hatred is that according to some she is very annoying. And really, how can you be sensitive enough to be bothered by a character whose personality doesn't revolve around being annoying like Sakura from Naruto?. The second reason (the most pathetic of all) is that according to some it bothers them how she mentions her mother all the time, those who say this have not seen the series because Katara only mentioned her mother FIVE TIMES in the entire series and According to some what bothers them is that she mentions her mother as if it were only hers, which could not be further from the truth, because the few times that Katara mentioned her mother she always said Sokka and I or our mother, but we continue. The third reason is that according to some their powers grow too much because of the plot, and it really is as if after 15 years they had not seen the series. Katara was a prodigy in her own right, she alone without training discovered the basic principle of waterbending which is "push and pull" or like when she discovered healing innately that as Jeong Jeong said is a sign of being a great bender, without Telling that she had a lot of raw power as a result of her emotions in a few days with professional training she managed to be in line with some of the most powerful benders and even after her training she only managed to defeat Zuko under the full moon, she was defeated by that earthbender general, and she only managed to be at the level of Azula at night (probably full moon), and if so many are concerned about the plot because they do not question Aang dominating all the elements innately even earth, in short they should be grateful that they have a character female as good as Katara unlike other franchises.

People forget the entire series takes place in a little over a year. i never hated katara even in this moment. It simply showed that she was grieving and traumatised over the loss od her parent, something she personally witnessed, and it also showed that despite her kind, nurturing motherly, side, she had a darker side. Yes, what she said to sokka was hurtful, but given her situation it was definetely understable. I say this because i can relate to her in this moment. Iwon I have personally said something very hurtful to my father, last summer ( while i was 22)all because i was insensitive and selfish. And that was nothing compared to the giref over losing one's parent. the viewers shoudn't hate katara, point out that she did wrong, yes. but hating her is way out of line.

that moment didn’t make me hate her, it actually broke my heart. like yeah it was wrong of her to say those things and they were hurtful to both sokka and aang but to me it showed just how isolated her grief and trauma made her feel. it’s truly a tragic moment. when it comes to katara too many people lack empathy. acknowledging what she said was wrong while also recognizing, understanding, and validating her pain are two things that can and SHOULD coexist.
@SurenBhandari324 жыл бұрын
Yes I completely agree. She was isolated in her suffering and grief over the mother's last moments not Sokka. Sokka definitely felt the loss on equal terms but it's different with her because the grief that Katara carried throughout her life seems to be not shared by Sokka who didn't see his mother in a state of terror. On top of that he responds to the possible confrontation with the murder as something he doesn't care much about, and this is what caused her to be so baffled by Sokka's apparent lack of strong feelings.

It affected him, of course, but he handled it differently than Katara did and I think that's s u p e r realistic. I think if the writers made them both have the same reaction it would ruin it, but that's just me. Yeah, Zuko's father tried to kill him and ended up leaving a permanent scar to his face and Aang's entire family and nation wiped out. But one thing to not do, is compare other people's trauma. Katara took hers and Sokka's mothers death in a different way and I'm honestly glad they did that. It added more to the storyline. Anyways thanks for coming to my TED Talk. :') ♡♡

When they are doing GAang things, Katara is always the mom-responsible figure and Sokka´s the class clown, but just like you said, Katara has a hot temper and has a lot of childish behaviours (well she´s a child after all) but in those moments, Sokka´s the one who shows how mature he really is. A common thing I noticed is that Katara doesn´t know how to speak with adults, she tens to lash out and even talk back escalating a lot of situations, unlike Sokka who can always have conversations with said adults and change their opinions

I just think it's funny how Katara gets bashed for her selfish moments as if she can't be human, yet Zuko is so easily forgiven, admired, and babied because he "redeemed" himself, as if his atrocious moments of betrayal and evil aren't somehow 10 fold worse than Katara's smaller moments of selfishness. Zuko-the-little-sasuke-wannabe b*tch isn't bad because he helped the Gaang all the way at the end of the war but Katara is bad and annoying because even though she was a critical factor in saving the avatar and helping the Gaang from day one, she had moments where she was emotional. I think why I find katara annoying sometimes is because of her place in the show Everyone in team avatar is imperfect in ways but she seems like she has the most moments of imperfection and just straight up rudeness and no one is there to tell her When someone is wrong and needs to overcome their flaw katara will be the first person to lash out at the (physically with water) or slap them or something but no one is there to do that to katara It makes me want to jump in the screen and tell her herself when she fucks up like this because no one does so E. G. When katara wanted to help that town in book 3 she is in the wrong here no doubt - they risk their mission for a town they can save among all others by defeating the fire lord - it only worked by like But why was the portrayal that katara is a sweet angel and sokka is selfish and not as caring 'Sokka you really do have a heart' Like I don't hate her but she is just unnecessarily bitchy sometimes and no one puts her in her place and if the show just had sokka tell her off a few times too she would be much more better
