Oh my gosh! This suddenly makes sense! I memorized “watashi no mae wa...desu “ years ago and now I get why they used that particle. “I am the one named”
@zaphyr1371
@zaphyr1371 4 жыл бұрын
The particle "no" used in "Watashi no namae wa ___ desu" is the variant that shows possession, as explained in video 13, translating the sentence to "My name is ___". It is different from the variant of "no" that has been discussed in this video, which transforms noun versions of colors or adjectives into their corresponding 'one' pronoun. This is my first run through Japanese, so my knowledge of the usage of particles is limited, but I felt fairly certain of my reasoning and thought I might be able to help clear a misunderstanding, so I decided to point it out :)

Great job on the videos. Really enjoying them. You remind me a lot of day9, one of my favorite casters, mixed with Saul Goodman. Keep it up, I'll be looking out for the next one. Btw, how would I say 'it's the one you like' ? Anata wa suki no desu ? Or is that totally wrong.... It looks weird.
@japanesefromzero
@japanesefromzero 8 жыл бұрын
DAY9 is the VERY reason I why I decided to start making these style of videos. He is fun to watch even if you don't play StarCraft. I even had a "Funday Monday" in the "Japanese Daily" series. Unfortunately with NA adjectives like like SUKI you can't make the ONE pronoun with NO like that. It's also a bit too much to cover in a comment here. I will make a video on this concept in the future in another series, maybe "Japanese in 5!".

You have "あかとあおのが…" but the other examples you give are mostly adjectives, right? I thought "あか" was a noun, and the adjective form was "あかい". Why not say "あかいとあおいのが…"? Seems grammatically awkward if red and blue are nouns there.
@japanesefromzero
@japanesefromzero 8 жыл бұрын
Good point. But the ONE pronoun can be made with adjectives and nouns. For Example: What kind of car do you have? にほんのです。 It's a Japanese one. So colors, which as we know 6 of them have noun and adjective versions, can use either form. あおのが すきです。 あおいのが すきです。 I like blue ones.

Given the context - been asked which one do you like - 'ga' is better, since you are replying "I like yours" and not starting a conversation with "talking about yours, ...", in which case 'ha' is better, I think. (p.s. english language do abuse in the usage of personal pronouns).

Memrise has いちにち? That is wrong for "1st day of the month". Correct me if I am wrong, but I think Memrise is created by crowdsourcing right? It's possible that person just messed up. IF you are counting DAYS like 1 day, 2 days, then いちにち is correct to say "one day".

If you're saying ”I like the black ones" which would be ”くろいのがすきです”, would it make sense to think of the "すき” as literally meaning "to my liking"? くろいの = the black ones, が = are, すき = to my liking (+ てす, obviously) Please correct me if I'm wrong, but for now this is what helps me to structure my sentences correctly. ありがとうございます!!

@japanesefromzero

Yes but in English if someone says "What color cars do you like?" It would be weird to say "A blue." SO we add "one". Japanese doesn't actually care about this "one" word. It's English that requires it. This particular grammar wouldn't make sense for some other languages that don't use a word similar to "one".

Is the font you're using a common one? It seems to differ quite a bit from the Genki books we use at school
@japanesefromzero
@japanesefromzero 8 жыл бұрын
I don't know which font Genki uses. Most Japanese text books like to use a serif font, which I have never been fond of. I am much more of a Verdana, Arial type font (sans serif). The font I am using is common. We use that particular font as it has the most standard looking characters, in my opinion. And they worked well with our progressive system.

It's not a huge gap between the two, but I notice such differences as sa and ki in the videos are connected by an extra stroke it seems. I think the obvious answer must be that both are correct, but as a beginner it can be a bit confusing at times :)

@robertwilfred636

I think for the purposes of George's videos, books and teaching, I'd say don't worry about it and use 'GA' as the initial default.
@RedXGaming1
@RedXGaming1 8 жыл бұрын
No, i'm pretty sure you can't. Because the subject of that sentence is "nihon to italia no kuruma" and it has to be marked with "ga". You can add a topic to that sentence "me" : Watashi wa nihon to italia no kuruma ga suki desu. Hope that helped a little!
@rcu007
@rcu007 8 жыл бұрын
I'm in super mega basic Japanese yet, but from what I have learned from this videos, but I can tell you that it depends on what you want to say. If you put WA, then it means that the topic is "Nihon to Italia no kuruma" you are saying something about that, and that is that you like it. When you put GA, it means that there's a topic already stablished and you are just referring to that topic with GA (taking about the subject: cars) For example: Anata WA Nihon to Italia no Kuruma GA suki desu. In your sencetce, it's just means that the topic ANATA (you) it's assumed or it's already established.
@Melbester9
@Melbester9 8 жыл бұрын
+Roberto Cardenas. Theres a few differences between wa and ga. Check out his wa and ga video, he explains it straightforward. Ga is used as emphasis in a sentence but Ga is used after a question word like Nani, Dare, etc. Never use Wa after a question word. Wa is also used when you begin a conversation then you use Ga the rest of the sentence.
@rcu007
@rcu007 8 жыл бұрын
Well, after reviewing the question Robert Wilford asked, if he put WA, it would mean like it's the cars that like something right? Like for example, if I write Neko WA suki desu.. would mean the cat likes... and watashi wa neko ga suki desu, means I like cats. Is that right?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe with these you can skip the "no" entirely. kore = this one sore = that one are = that one (distant) For these words the "one" is implied, so the "no" becomes redundant. "kore ga oishii desu" works fine on its own.

Each language has it's rules and structure and short cuts, honestly it's one reason I love listening to and trying to understand new languages.

I have a definite goal of getting through all of my books for videos. I now have over 700 videos released so I don't think I will be stopping anytime soon.

Hey George! I finally caught one of the live streams; that was fun! I wanted to say this again: I probably wouldn't be learning Japanese right now if I hadn't found your work. So really, thank you so much. So far (I know I have a long way to go), the only thing I'm struggling with is memorizing the vocabulary. Sometimes I just want to move on to the next grammar lesson... but even if I understand the grammar, I can't do the reading practice because I don't remember the vocabulary. Maybe that's a good thing though. Otherwise I might try to learn it all at once.

You could go to Memrise for remembering vocabulary. I'm using it for Kanji. Very useful I really recommend it.

Melbester9 sorry. I wasn't specific enough I think. I meant the days of the month. So 1st to 31st day.
