Whoa. This level of discourse is so unexpectedly high, it’s shocking…in a great way! This is a sophisticated legal discussion and some of the subtlety is lost if one doesn’t do the homework. I would argue that the settlement system and the notion of “disappearing” Palestinians is more analogous to the 19th century reservation policy of the US government towards Indigenous Americans, although that analogy (like all analogies) has its limitations.

The way you both were able to hold your faces and your mouths during this "question" needs to be studied. Too many people are unable to usefully process genocide, land and natural resource theft and oppression of people not their own has been studied but not wisely taught as a rule. The response Coates gave was an example of a dedication to patience, perseverance and a willingness to have all involved grow. Breathing deep tho. Questioning what to politically classify an old thing at this point in time is.... A lot.

I completely understand your point and I agree. But for the questioner it is personal. Him divorcing American slavery from the practices it was born from in the Caribbean speaks to a misunderstanding of history and the wider picture. Apartheid is Apartheid. Slavery is Slavery. Indentured Service is Indentured Service. The details or location don't make it a different thing. Unless you want to claim it, because you are different and special. The H word has been claimed and now cannot be used appropriately to identify the various examples of it without a specific group being involved. To me that is racist: our situation was special because we are better and special. I'm not saying he's doing all of that, but the desire comes from that root to me.

Excellent question and excellent comprehensive answer to a complex situation. I just gained some knowledge. As much as I wish otherwise, the future of the Palestinians is very grim with Trump as president. I have no doubt Trump will undo any current stipulations the US has in place towards a peaceful resolution. In doing so he not only gives Netanyahu the green light to proceed with his genocide but will also be providing the weapons to do so.

Maybe, it could be classified as a form of a caste system? Except, the dominant group, Israelis, are knowingly, and with major intent, forcefully, removing the existence of Palestinians in the two areas, Gaza and the West Bank. The wording needs to be stronger and more directed.

I'm guessing that the question asker is a plant, his question is so loaded with inaccuracies and frequently lobbed propaganda, i.e., that Palestinians citizens of Israel have full citizenship and are equal from a legal and societal standpoint from jewish citizens, which is clearly not the case. That is beside the fact that the charges of Apartheid are leveled against Israel in relationship to non-Israeli palestianians in the West Bank and Gaza, which are areas that are the equivalent of the Jim Crow south in terms of living conditions for non-Israelis. Finally, as Coates points out, he's far from the first to accuse Israel of Apartheid. Multiple international organizations have done the same, as have dozens of Israeli scholars.
