I heard and read a lot of horror stories about chemo so I went there in very bad spirits. As it turned out, the effects were negligible, just cold feet. And yes, half of hair was lost but now it has grown back and better than before. What I admire in dr. Christine's insights is that one should see cancer as just one of so many diseases. The patiënt AND his family and friends.

So well put! It's my hope that those sorts of questions come up much less often! You definitely have a way with words! Perhaps if folks are curious, maybe they can educate themselves to become more proactive and helpful . Good intentions sometimes come off as hurtful and condescending. The more people that can become educated and informed, the more we can perhaps come at THIS disease and combat it. I still can't get past your early experience with doctors that didn't dig past their book of statistics. I to had an early melanoma diagnosis. Doctor of course wanted to argue with me, initially the cancer was missed, a year later, you know the story. Always trust your gut!!! Best wishes to you!!

Oh my. I would never ask such a thing. If I know someone has cancer I try to not ask questions but make general definitive statements such as " you're looking cheerful today" ( if they are) "sounds like you're doing well" ( if they volunteer information ) "i' m glad you have family to give you a hand. I don't ask questions, I listen and try to give an upbeat answer. I figure the person will volunteer what they want you to know, and its rude and invasive to grill them.

Very true. Prognosis is just a statistical figure that concerns past pathologies. I was diagnostisised easophageal cancer in 2018. I didn't want to hear a prognosis and the doctors were tactfull enough not to begin talking about it themselves. Now everything is fine, without easophagus but actually in better overall condition than before the treatment. After all, when you survive this, a prognosis is meaningless. And also if you don't...

Ohmigosh! 😮 and besides it’s none of their effn business!! Hello! … my husband asked the doc my prognoses - I didn’t, but he did and the doc says she has - like I wasn’t even in the room - he says she has a 40% chance of living 5-years and a 25% chance of being here 7 years. That info is always completely unproductive. And it’s always dated because stats live in the past. That was in 2007. So do the math sister ❤❤😊

If you get cancer in the future see how it feels when you are asked. Health care professionals should always try to think how someone receiving bad news would feel. well intentioned I think because so many different cancers now have pretty decent outlooks, or can have anyways. so much marketing and awareness goes to breast cancer, and yes that IS still a huge killer but not how it used to be. despite being well intentioned, it is not a great question to ask and frankly I also don't ask the doctor. Any new doctor I let them know right away they can keep their stats to themselves.

The truth is this cancer happens fast. My dad passed away from it. I think 6 months is average. I understand from the patient’s perspective, not wanting to think about that. But also, the family and loved ones left behind, I wish my dad and his main caretaker had prepared more. I found out he had a DNR when he was already in the ICU days away from death. That hurt. Sorting his small estate was a mess that tore my family apart. He thought he had more time and seemed to be in a bit of denial about the whole thing. The rest of us were left to sort it out, and it didn’t go well. Being honest and communicating well, while also trying to be optimistic that you’ll be an exception and make it. I think communication would have helped. It’s been 5 years, and my mom and I are still very traumatized by the whole thing.

@@jessicah3450 you know what you may have been in denial too if you were the one with cancer. You can only think about how you feel. If that was how u felt, then great but u don't need to project your thoughts of someone elses disease on them. It's called having some tact, manners, and general respect for a fellow human being. I think you might be in denial of how offensive this came across to some people. Sometimes not saying or commenting would be better than saying anything at all.
