Jan, no matter what Canon does you know there will still be people who will not be happy. IMO the Canon R5 Mark II and the R1 are cameras that offer great features, once production cameras are available, and photographers who are knowledgeable use these new cameras then the cameras will speak for themselves. 👍👍😎

Having full 14-bit RAW files at high speed in the R5 Mk II is a huge advantage over the original. I pre-ordered a R5 Mk2 within 3 min of the launch.

Sounds good but then the argument will continue that this new camera is the R1. Canon will need to come out and say there aren’t anymore flagship cameras, rather they are in the business of selling niche cameras.

I wonder if we as photographers are allowing our pride to interfere with common sense judgments? I have a IPhone pro 15 . I now use it on my z8 as a screen for filming videos. It connects via my phone to my z 8 and gives me full control over the setting iso f stop and shutter spend plus a good idea of what I am doing picture frame wise. The other thing I use it for is frame finding by filming in the iPhone I get an impression of the area and easy to see the locations beauty spots had a camera allows . I film using the z 8 and find I can get away with out using the more complex gimbal. I would imagine canon has an app same as snap bridge? Really for older photographers like me (70) it helps with the bending into awkward positions . You can buy a small rig mount for the flash mount and it works really well holds connection well and is reasonably fast connection wise. So it’s worth trying out different but it works for me more so on a tripod . I can set up lower to the ground see what the cameras sees focus and shoot . May be iPhone would give you a thumbs up if you promoted it a useful piece of camera accessory hope you get to do your trip . And thank you from your friendly advice . Ps when set on a tripod it give me a free hand to look around knowing I have to touch the screen to start recording or I can record and still have the freedom to look around for a second to see if I was missing something . Hope you did not mind me pointing this out

Have a great trip, Jan. I look forward to seeing lots of superb images! The original R5 is such a great camera, it really didn't need dramatic upgrades that some people seemed to expect. Canon was smart with R5 Mark II. Don't mess with success! There are still a few minor things that they might be able to iron out in R5II software updates (such as allowing users to adjust how many shots are taken in the pre-shoot mode). The most significant R5II shortcoming I see is the continued use of an SD card slot. That's a potential bottleneck that could have been avoided by putting dual CFExpress card slots in the R5II (like in the R1). To me the R1 is more like an R3 Mark II. In fact, R3 sales will likely be seriously undermined by the R1. Perhaps Canon plans to discontinue the R3. It's hard to imagine the R3 and R1 selling alongside each other. Yes, the R3's list price is $1300 US less than the R1's. But $6299 isn't all that big a stretch to someone already planning to spend $4999. In light of all that, maybe Canon plans to revert to their old naming conventions and eventually add a high megapixel R1"s" (similar to how they offered 1D and 1Ds series DSLRs alongside each other in the past). Lots for the Canon rumor sites to discuss! 😂 Personally, I won't be buying either an R1 or an R5II. I'm waiting for an R7 Mark II (now that the APS-C lens situation is improving). I seriously hope Canon goes back to more traditional controls on the R7II, while also reducing rolling shutter, improving AF, and making the camera compatible with a battery grip. Once the upgrading gwts into full swing and the market gets flooded with original R5, causing prives to drop, I might buy one of those too. That would serve my less frequent full frame needs very well.

So I purchased a Canon R6 Mark II to replace my R7. It is hands down my favorite camera I have ever used for shooting wildlife, except the 24mp sensor. Flexibility of autofocus system and how well it tracks and nails focus is nothing short of amazing. This new R5 II is basically a R6 II with electronic mode dial, screen on top and 45 BSI sensor with more than twice as fast read out speed as R6II or R5. Then add one of the most sophisticated autofocus systems available with 30 fps Raw. So what is not to love on this camera? Finally pre-burst implemented properly, thank you Canon. That new action sport mode is very interesting, why couldn't you add birds and wildlife also? Load images just like you can people if you want to target certain species. 14 bit Raw on all photo's is also very welcome. Bigger brighter EVF, improved in-body IS and also some pretty great Video specs as well. My dream camera so I pre ordered mine about one minute after it was available for purchase.

What Jan said @12:05 ! Truer words have never been spoken ! ALL the cameras Jan talked about in this vid are better than my R7's in a lot of ways. But reach is SO important to me, I don't have much choice at the moment. It kills me that Canon apparently thinks that folks using crop bodies are not really serious about their photography, or willing to spend more $$$ on their gear. I'd pay $3K in a heartbeat, for a more pro level APS-C with more of the features of these higher end FF bodies... Great video Jan, and as always, your photography is as good as it gets :)

Though I am a Z9 shooter myself, I would like to add 3 more things about the R5 MkII... 1. IBIS wobble on wider lenses 2. Better noise in video in shadow areas 3. Eye control autofocus As for the R1... What if they called it the R2 MkII... In your opinion would it have made a difference???

I wasn't in the market for the R1, but the R5 II I did pre-order. However, my question always goes back to, "how on earth did pro wild life shooters ever make a living shooting those 5 to 12 or so megapixel cameras prior to the megapixel explosion?" I'm not saying it's not important, but nowadays and with all this technology, most KZbin photographers seem to think they can't get great results unless they have a camera that does everything for them or shoots 100 fps with a 100 megapixel sensor. That's my 2 cents worth on the matter.

A big part of it is that higher resolution screens and viewing devices make it much harder to get away with low megapixel shots than in the past.

I've been a wildlife photographer for 40 yrs and long before YT came on the scene and even going back to the very first days of AF in film cameras. The MP and FPS debate will continue to rage on, we managed with what we had and got the job done, albeit with far less successful hit rates than with ML & DSLR's of the last 15+ yrs! Nonetheless these days I'm using and thoroughly enjoying ALL of the 45MP's on both my Z9's. It's such a joy to be using these new ML bodies, whether it's Nikon, Canon or Sony!

Of course you can use lower MP cameras and I have taken many images with 8MP 1d Mark IIs, but it's a lot harder and now there are many brands who have the high MP, which would out you at a great disadvantage when selling your images. A lot of place won't even accept an 8 MP file these days

Jan, I love the channel and you are the reason I bought the original R5 and RF 100-500. I love my gear and have been enjoying it for years now. I know all the buzz right now is for the R5 ii, but that means there will be a lot of R5’s in the used market and a lot of potential new users. There are times I think Nikon is making more affordable gear for me. I would love to see a video on R5 with the 100-500 matched against a Z8 100-600. I’m basically wondering should I stay Canon or jump to Nikon as an enthusiast amateur. Btw,love the prosets! Stay well!

I do sports and think the R1 should have 45 MP too as we often want to get even closer into the action. I shoot wide enough to make sure I don't miss any action or can anticipate the action so I often crop in post - reason why I use the R5. I ordered both to see if the R5II will give me enough reason to keep it over the R1's capabilities. We'll see in November once I have hands on both to compare.

I definitely would rather have an R5M2 in a R3 body, with 2 CFe cards. I don’t know why Canon is so slow to figure this stuff out. It’s simple. Also, yes, I’m exactly like you when i travel, extra bags for electronics (cameras, lens, laptops, AVP, etc).

My only complaint about the R5 Mark II is that it's a downgrade from the R5C in ONE category. The R5C has proven that 8K oversampled 4K60p is possible and Nikon had 8K oversampled 4K60p for years but the R5 Mark II still limits it to only 30fps. The R5 Mark II would be capable of 8K oversampled 4K60p as R5C has proven but Canon seemingly doesn't want to give us oversampled 4K60p to leave it as an exclusive feature for their R5C. Their newest R5 Mark II should at least match everything their older R5C was capable of. Canon gave us 8K oversampled 4K60p and then took it from us again. Cutting features from your newest flagship camera to leave them as exclusive features on an older camera even though their new camera would technically be capable of is a bad look! It's not too late to fix this by bringing 8K oversampled 4K60p to the R5 Mark II with a firmware update though.

Yep, I'm hearing you about packing to go on trips. 2 camera bags and a drone bag and just a small bag with clothes 🤣. In regards to the new canon gear, I just bit the bullet and sold my Canon gear and moved over to the Z8 with the Z 600MM f4 TC, and I couldn't be happier. The R5 was great, but the canon just doesn't have the lens selection Nikon has. Canon also doesn't seem to care about wildlife photographers either.

Great video as usual! I agree that most reviewers haven't picked up on the significance of 14 bit files in electronic shutter. For my landscape photography, this (hopefully) means that focus bracketing will produce 14 bit raw files, significantly increasing dynamic range at low ISO.

My only gripes with the R5Mii is the slower stacked sensor. We will have to see if it matters in the field though. Well that and the lack of great wildlife lens options that nikon has.

@@AstairVentof for sports maybe, but for wildlife honestly it's not like even the R5i's rolling shutter was a deal breaker for even pros. My guess is it'll be a non issue and indiscernible from the other stacked sensors out there.
@AstairVentof
@AstairVentof Ай бұрын
@@simonthibodeau7082 I'm currently shooting the R6mii and sometimes I notice the rolling shutter, yet its faster than the R5. It really depends on what you are shooting. If its static birds and mammals then you're fine. But when I shoot hummingbirds it can ruin shots. I'm thinking that it should be fine since its only a bit less than half the speed of the Z8/A1 but the pricing makes it a harder sell especially when many of the updates that would distinguish it seem to be software based. Meaning other brands might implement true raw precapture after the fact.

The R5mkii is a great upgrade for Canon shooters but I don't see that it will attract many Nikon shooters to the brand. For Sony shooters it's less obvious as Sony doesn't really have anything comparable in the lineup (but since wildlife shooters with Sony all just paid-up for the A1, the R5mkii is not enough of an incentive to move to Canon). So it's a great option if you are in the eco-system already but not much of a reason to change. The R1 is such a niche camera, I could see Canon resurrecting their strategy of the past when they had a Canon 1D and 1Ds - I could actually see an R1s with the R5mkII sensor announced in 6 months.

It's got be buggered why people seem to have had such strange expectations of the R1. The 1 series has always been a sports camera, the 3 has always been an experimental platform with only intermittent model releases, the 5 has always been the photographers all-rounder (most of whom don't want a large built in grip body). The R5 2 is definitely an incremental upgrade, but again, what on earth did people expect? It's not like there has been a paradigm shift in technology in the interim, like the introduction of mirrorless tech that made the R5 seem such a big jump. If I hadn't accidentality crushed my R5, I'd sit with it until it needed changing, however since it's gone to heaven, I've pre-ordered an R5 2 while I get by with my R6 2 (which I like, but I need the extra cropping space the 5 gives me).

I would consider the R5 MK2 a significant not incremental upgrade to the R5. For those of you comparing the two models the improvements in the R5 Mk2 include the following: 1) Stacked sensor with faster readout and less rolling shutter 2) Faster 30 fps vs. 20 fps 3) 14-bit RAW at 30 fps vs. 12-bit RAW at 20 fps 4) RAW pre-capture 5) Inclusion of EyeControl AF 6) Improvements in AF Tracking 7) User adjustable frame rates 8) Ability to have shutter sound when using the electronic shutter 9) AE metering divided into 6144 zones for more precise exposure vs. 384 in R5 10) faster top shutter speed of 1/32000 sec 11) Increased number of shots and video recording time 12) Black-out free EVF

The R5 has been a fantastic camera, and while I shot different kinds of birds than you, I loved the 45 mp sensor on the R5. Agree that the ES bit depth improvement is a big deal. For photography in a theater from the audience seating, I like to use ES so as not to bother others with shutter noise, and there the low noise performance clearly shows because I like to use high shutter speeds which requires high ISO. Also, for microscopy, the first curtain shutter still vibrates the apparatus when it starts the exposure, so ES is best. Again, low noise perf an be very important.

I think R5 Mk2 is a great option as it supports battery grip, higher megapixels will give us more reach since we can crop it further. Also it'll probably provide an even higher reach than the R7 if it's "in body upscaling" does a good job. I'll definitely buy the R5 mk2 because of it's new viewfinder eye track autofocus feature. It just seems to be the dream body. And it's about the same price if not cheaper with all the accessories and multiple backup batteries. It'll be a great fit to the 200-800 lens.

Thank you Jan for your video and your thoughts. I am s Nikon shooter and I like the Z9 in the field. It is robust, the battery is big and it is heavy. You are completely right: disappointment with the R1 is: many people want a robust flagship camera. The R1 is a great upgrade from the R3. Canon made the mistake not naming the R3: R1. And in future they can bring a higher megapixel camera with a bigger body (for example the R2 or R1s). For me in the future the best camera has the specs from a Sony A9III with more then 45 MB and a robust body: birds are small, cautious and fast. Best wishes for your trip, Roland

R5ii seems like an excellent advance--aside from the HD card slot and the subpar weather sealing. Assuming that the AF is vastly improved for birds in the R5ii, what I will be really waiting for is a Canon zoom that is longer than the 100-500 and of better quality than the unimpressive 200-800 lens. In the past when DSLRs were the cutting edge technology, Canon had the 5D Mark IV with a 30 MP sensor and the 1DX Mark III that had a 24 MP sensor but superior speed cutting edge autofocus, a rugged weather sealed body and a heavy duty durable shutter rated for over 500,000 actuations. The differences in sensor resolution was not as great as the differences between the R5 Mark II and Canon R1. We are living in a time after the introduction of the Sony A1 and Nikon Z9 that have together redefined what a flagship mirrorless camera is. Hence the disappointment that some people have expressed.

Have a great trip, and fingers crossed that you find your target species. For me, a high MP camera in a pro body would be ideal, not only because of the weather sealing, but also because of the ability to use both AF motors in the RF600f4. I pre-ordered the R5 II and it has almost all features I wanted except for bigger battery and burst mode that compares to Sony's 120fps.

The original R5 and Sony A1 have really changed the game that it is possible to do high megapixel and high frame rate shooting and especially with the A1 stack BSI sensor where no compromise is needed. You can have both. Where in the past, high megapixel cameras barely get over 10 fps so in the past with limited technology, you have this concept that if you want to shoot fast, you have to use a lower resolution camera. And if you want to shoot high resolution, you can shoot higher frame rate. Public perception of what is truly a flagship camera has shifted now with more flagships cameras like Nikon Z9 and even a lower price Nikon Z8 so it is very hard to go back to the past now because technological advancement has made it possible to have both and being able to do that and not giving it to the consumers seems like a ripoff when Canon can really take advantage of that R5 mark ii sensor and make it an R1

I like your suggestion, R5 II in R3 body! I have made a pre-order for R5 II. There were times that my R5 struggled keeping the birds in focus during flights. The new R5 should handle it quite easily.

I pre-ordered the R1 about 3 years ago, hoping it will be “the” do it all Flagship. High fps, high megapixel (45 is fine), rugged weather sealed body and a big battery. After the announcement I canceled my preorder. Will keep the R3 and R5 for now. The new R5 II can’t to multiple exposures as RAW. This is a feature i need and use all the time. Canceled that pre-order too. Canon, please.. just put the R5 2 tech in an R3 style body.

Yes, I would use a R5II over my R5 without question because of precapture, less rolling shutter, better IBIS, etc...but wish Canon had more lenses for wildlife. I'm tired of the 100-500 with the teleconverter limitations and would like something with more reach. 200-800 is not available, almost a year after release.

I went over to Nikon for their fantastic collection of wildlife lenses. I would love to see a 600 f/5.6, 600 f/4.0 TC, 800 f/6.3 DO, 200-500 f/4.0 TC from Canon, some big hitters. The R5 Mk2 is also a bit disappointing since its electronic shutter is slower than the Z8 and mechanical shutters(1/160th vs 1/270th). While the rolling shutter is subject dependent, I shot a lot of fast moving animals. Hopefully they'll really start kicking out some of the big wildlife lenses for you soon!

@@codebunniesI feel the same. I'm really tempted to switch from my R6Mii and 100-500 to the Z8 and either their 500pf or 180-600. I'm used to the Canon body and I like having three dedicated command dials. I love my RF 28-70. If the R5Mii was not so expensive, we find that the rolling shutter is minimal and the lens options improved I would see no reason to leave Canon. I really wish they would fix the buffer issue though...
@codebunnies
@codebunnies Ай бұрын
@@AstairVentof the R5ii buffer is a bit weak compared to the 450-1000 images of the Z8. And it's a 1/160th electronic shutter vs 1/270th in the Z8(mechanical is about 1/280th to 1/300th) On Nikon I use the 24-70, 70-200, 105 macro, 400 f/4.5, 100-400, 600 PF, 800 PF, and 600 f/4.0 TC, Canon don't have a good answer Nikon's long lenses (yet). And like you are thinking, I switched to Nikon for the 500 PF (which I upgraded to the 600 PF). I imagine the 28-70 would be really hard to give up, and to an extent the 100-500 too(brilliant lens). Have you considered a Z6iii or Z8 + 180-600 as your wildlife setup and keeping your R6ii for the 28-70?

Agree 100% with your argument about having an high mpx R3. That would be a big seller IMO. I have to give you props for at least being somewhat critical of Canon's choices here, unlike most who love everything Canon releases. I would think you are the preeminent bird photographer and its good to have someone of your expertise commenting. Seems there are millions of Canon loyalists who claim the R5 body and battery are "more than enough" for anyone's needs. I have shot the R5 and a 1DX2 in heavy rain and the R5 shut off while the IDX2 didn't miss a beat. There is a difference because if there wasn't, these companies would put small batteries and less durable bodies on every camera to save money. And I would hold off on the idea that "action priority" and the ability to determine where a volleyball is going will translate to finding a songbird in heavy cover. That's a different situation entirely and the R5 certainly didn't excel at that. Plus $4300 plus close to another $700 for grip and batteries puts it at Z9 price range. For me the R5 is a hard pass. Maybe if I had to shoot women's volleyball though I would be so thrilled 🤣

Good points Jan. If you use electronic shutter then the R5 II is a nice upgrade with the reduced rolling shutter and getting 14 bit files (in addition to higher fps). I agree that the 14 bit files from the eshutter has been under appreciated. I am very much looking forward to more testing as there are reports of higher DR and lower noise from this new sensor. I've seen initial samples that appear to have less noise. However, I'd like to see more testing. The new autofocus and action priority modes look amazing for sports photography but, I wonder how much better the R5 II autofocus will perform for wildlife. There are a lot of great features for discriminating between multiple subjects to find the one that is at the center of the action for sports. Most of the time for wildlife, I don't have that many subjects in my viewfinder. The R5 is already pretty good at that so, I wonder if one will feel any difference with the R5 II with wildlife. Looking forward to your testing!

If it were not for unresolved rolling shutter. I would be anxious to place my order for the R5-ll. Instead, I am contemplating a Z-8 for $800 USD less with a 600mm F/6.3 In reality what good is 30FPS over 20FPS when both have a rolling shutter effect? It means I still have to shoot mechanical at 12 FPS and more than likely face EVF blackout / interruption. The autofocus improvements were a must. I am disappointed that they chose to add a bunch of useless features instead of addressing what was really required in the area of rolling shutter. Enough ranting :( For the Cockatoos :) Would you be talking about the Black Cockatoos? More particularly the Glossy Black? Halmaturiuus only found on Kangaro Island? Just a wild guess. Exactly what I thought when I went through the specs: 14 bit RAW with electronic shutter makes electronic shutter finally usable without compromise - big improvement! Once it comes to shadow recovery, 12 bit just doesn't cut it. I tested this initially at my R5, and use only mechanical shutter on the R5 since. No oversampled 4k 60 is disappointing, though, even R6 II does it. And these in-camera AI 'enhancements' go in the wrong direction, too.

Agreed on most. But I think the biggest deal in R5ii is the variable electronic shutter. My biggest challenge is waiting for buffer to clear. At 15fps standard electronic, I should be able to go to 300 shots per buffer. And I don't want to go to craw to achieve 130 and be shooting craw when its not needed. The 14bit electronic is nice to have but my understanding is that it does not matter above 400 iso, and for animals this rarely happens. The biggest downside is $3000 upgrade costs (2,300 sell buy, $500 new batteries, and $200 for a bigger card to manage the 30fps and precapture. And another $400 for new grip for cooling if you are a video person).
