This is the only example I can find of a fencer's foil actually not working when they ask the referee to test it 😂

Ref nearly fucked up there. He's (understandably) surprised that his first test doesn't work, so instinctively thumbs the tip again to see if he can get the light to go on (which we'd all do). But if the light *does* go on, now he has to explain to the opponent and the coaches why he's annulling a touch when they all saw the light go on.

Not a big problem? "I tested it and it failed, annulé, en garde"

@@OlympicFoil Optics matters a lot. Arguably the ref can even let the fencer test the foil themselves, and there's actually nothing in the rules that says that a fencer can't first test the foil before showing the ref. Making a habit of cleanly testing the foil exactly once in an unambiguous way is important for maintaining order on piste - even if technically the ref can just assure the opponent that everything was fine.

@@JohnSmith-cx8co Certainly not going to get any disagreement from me on "optics matters a lot."! 😃👍 The rules say: It is not necessary that the failure found should repeat itself each time a test is made; but it is essential that the fault should be observed by the Referee without the possibility of doubt at least once during the tests made by him or under his supervision. Imo there's nothing bad about assuring the opponent everything was fine in an action

@@OlympicFoil I think the best way to assure everyone of consistency is to be very clear and transparent with your actions and movements.

That happens regularly, either when the barrel is deformed and the point cannot travel freely or there is a short somewhere in the system.

I suspect this one is the barrel deforming since he tried to press it again maybe it didn't move the first time and he thought he didn't press 500gs. Maybe it's a short tho 😃

I'm not sure if I remember correctly, but at the back of my head Foconi also 'successfully' tested his foil as not working in last year's championship in France/Paris 🤔 But hey either way, that's a cool uncommon occurence anyways xD

Oh nice perfect! I was hoping this video might bring up a few other examples so I'll have a look for that one. There's one with Cheung in the HKG CHN match from 2019 too, but it's not as good an example as this.

The correct way would be to first check if the bodywire is attached/in good condition, and then press the tip. Rookie mistake from a fie ref🤔
