Drawing completely random boxes makes little sense. When you force yourself to use specific ratios and angles is when it actually becomes useful. Let's dissect a popular box rotation exercise invented by Krenz!

I practice this, but I add a bit of fun into it. I start by drawing boxes, and imagine I'm drawing my characters, while adding their proportions.

That's a great thing to do! Also because it's really the point of the exercise, it's just a means to an end! The goal is to learn to rotate anything in perspective

This is the tutorial beginners should start with after learning how to make smooth line art. Very clear explanations and easy to follow. Drawing a circle on opposite faces of a cube and connecting them will give an easy cylinder. I suppose I have to practice this and try to draw everyday objects to master this and then move onto anatomy. this will be a fun ride. Thank you for this tutorial.

Nemo, I have to thank you from the bottom of my heart. I was always SO confused how to rotate the box and draw them believable in said rotations and you showed and explained it so well I actually understood it. And believe me when I say I have watched a lot of videos about boxes. This was really well done, thank you! I was desperate and nearly quit (which is bad, because I think this exercise and drawing stuff in perspective is a really good way to get better and better). Thanks a ton, really. 😭

It's interesting that keeping the units consistent during rotations works. In the 3rd column (first row), when viewing the cube directly from the corner, the distance between the sides appears to remain the same as the unit length of the original square. However, in reality, it's sqrt(2) times the unit length. This simplification makes things way easier.

Here is the math that your head is doing when it comes to angles: θ= d/D Where: 𝜃 θ is the angular size of the object. 𝑑 d is the actual size of the object. 𝐷 D is the distance from the observer to the object. Now thats pretty cool

@theartofnemo
@theartofnemo 2 ай бұрын
Nope, it really just is rotating on one axis, then again on the other axis. Better to do it like that, I wouldn't recommend trying diagonal rotations manually tbh. Just doing these will cement them in your head anyway, to the point you should be able to recall them at whim

Funnily enough you can use boxes to draw cylinders.. just draw 2 boxes which makes a rectangle then draw circles in opposite faces (so choose 1 face on front box and other face on the corresponding face of the second box) then connect the lines.
