I would say there is one "romcom" that isn't this: My Big Fat Greek Wedding. it's literally a movie about a woman who just kind of wants to live her own life, who lives with her, sort of, over baring family (and they want her to marry someone specifically Greek) and she decides to kind of just, be her own person. And, she does that. Not necessarily with the total endorsement of all of her family, but they support her, mostly. Then, she meets a guy who isn't Greek and she falls in love with him. Yes, she lies about dating him, but, she's aware that her family wouldn't approve, despite the fact that she's 30. But, when everyone realizes that they are in love, they all just accept it and the ending is still happy, and no one has gotten jilted to is upset or had to go through the emotional fighting that most romcoms go through.
@JimmySteller4 жыл бұрын
All of that makes me feel that it doesn’t count as a romcom. Not much is at stake in the film and frankly, much as I enjoyed watching the film, it’s not that funny at all. It’s more of an indie slice-of-life film, the kind that Edward Burns would make.

I can ruin that movie for you, the actress who plays the protagonist is the writer of that movie and she didn’t just write herself as the Cinderella kind of fairytale princess but also she wrote in a very handsome man to be her prince charming and gave him her husband’s real life name, and if that’s not enough she made her husband who’s an actor play the role of that Prince Charming’s best friend and forced him to watch first hand his wife kissing a man who is the exact opposite of himself, tall with long flowing hair and a very handsome face. The worst part is, that the whole “my big fat greek wedding” plot is based on what her husband actually did in real life, her husband actually converted to Greek orthodoxy so he could marry her, and he was Jewish (Conversion is much more difficult for jewish people)

Wedding Singer is probably one of the few romantic comedies that doesn't leave me horrified at the main couple. They are both two genuinely nice people that find each other after having to spend time with horrible people, one even actually leaves the person she was going to marry on the alter on the wedding day, the person should be able to figure out that they don't want to be with that person before the day of the wedding when everything is paid for and it just embarrasses the person that was dumped. That was one of the reasons why I couldn't get behind Mary Jane and Peter in the Tobey Maguire version of Spider-Man. Mary Jane was about to marry a boring but nice guy whose family was paying for the entire wedding, but dumps him at the last minute for Peter. I mean it is shown that she was hesitant about marrying the guy and really wanted Peter. She could have any chance before the wedding day.
@jdprettynails8 жыл бұрын
So true! Movies use that plot device way too often. If you're having serious doubts about your relationship, you need to actually say something before hand. Also, it's always the brides who run away and leave the guy at the altar. Way to make men hate women even more, Hollywood.
@brettpgh33128 жыл бұрын
*slips into After Hours mode* But they aren't nice people finding love. They're people in committed relationships (Barrymore at least) looking for something else. If she doesn't love the guy she's with she should leave him. She shouldn't just wait around for someone to sing to her on a plane. And as far as Sandler goes he's overstepping his bounds. It's not his place to decide that the man she's with isn't good enough for her so he gets to break up their relationship. Contrary to what romantic comedies teach us you should only be seeking out a relationship if you aren't already in one. If you are either work on that relationship or end it. Don't immediately move on to the first guy who holds a boom box over his head. *I felt Katie working through me on that one, any of you guys feel that?*

@timothycarney96527 жыл бұрын
I will say that Hitch is actually a rom com where the people aren't villians, Hitch does believe in what he sells, he sells opurtunity, he sets people up and gives them advice to get them through dates, specifically with romance and not just sex in mind, because dating can be terrifying and go wrong, but getting your foot in the door can get you started Hitch is about an expert that is slightly disillusioned about his field, getting involved himself and, after hiccups, finding happiness and learning more about said field of expertise. Hitch is about a man trying to control relationships, not because he is evil, but because they are hard, and fail often, so he tries to help people start meaningful ones, or at least improve their odds, and in the course of teh film his own aibility to mangage a relationship is challenged, and he is forced to confront his own flaws and be more honest, not because his attempts to help people were wrong, but because life, and relationships aren't so simple and sometimes you need to take a chance to have any chance. The woman (cant remember character, I think she was played by Rachel Dawson?) is worse but not unbeleivable, she takes a bunch of Hitch's gestures badly, because of mistakes on his part, and after he appologizes she respects the spirit they were given in, but her attempt to ruin Hitch (before she knew he was the same as the guy she was dating) was because a friend blamed him for a manipulative boyfriend (when If I remember correctly the man was not coached by hitch ever, and only mentioned him as "thanks Hitch" in the girlfriends hearing, the girlfriend (or Dawson) latched on to this but it was probably sarcastic, refering to how he either didn't need hitch to get that far or upset that he didn't get the coaching to get farther, any info he got from hitch was likely freely available advice from whatever advertising he had, rather than anything like advice from the man himself)... IN any case ?Dawson? sets out to ruiin Hitch instead of suppporting her friend or looking into the manipulative jerk who used her, turining a op ed piece of journalism into a vandetta and potential slander campain, only stopped because Hitch confronted her If there was anything wrong with Hitch it was that it focused too much on the idea of men as the instigators and women as the recievers in a relationship. It puts all the pressure on men for a relationship to start at all, and makes women passive and helpless when the "wrong" kind of guy succeeds. Relationships need give and take Hitch shouldn't have felt that grand gestures were teh only way to "win" Dawson's attention, the film shows he was wrong, but only because those gestures weren't "honest" but his almost getting run over to see her was fine, as he gave his "hope you can fly speech". It flies because it is a romcom and because Hitch still has the tendency to go overboard but what really grinds my gears is that Dawson never apologizes, or aknowolges her faults at any point, including planing on ruining a man on the words of a jerk that just dumped her friend after manipulating her so he could sleep with her, and if it weren't for Hitch's tendency for grand gestures for them to have a big talk she might of gon on to permanently ruin him, and far more relationships than the one that hitch managed to help by actually talkin to the woman involved

This was *_hilarious_*. Absolutely love _After Hours_. Wish they'd mention _Time Traveler's Wife_, though. It's probably one of the few Rom-Com films I actually like and it'd be cool to hear them twist it around and present it as an "evil" movie :D

coming back to this many years later, but I can think of one movie that doesn't fit this: The Wedding Singer. Yeah, the Adam Sandler movie. Think about it, both Robbie and Julia are genuinely good people. Julia is basically just the sweetest thing in the world, and Robbie gives freaking piano lessons to old ladies for literal meatballs. Meanwhile, Glen is a cheating, emotionally neglectful, sexist sociopath who is only using Julia as a status symbol, and Linda is a gold-digging, manipulative bitch. The entire conflicts of the movie revolve around Robbie agonizing over whether or not to ruin a presumably happy relationship with the news that Glen is a dirtbag, or if he's just jealous because of his own feelings for Julia, and Julia coming to terms with the fact that Glen treats her like shit and she isn't happy with him. Even the _one_ time one of our protagonists is a jerk, he _immediately_ recognizes his fault in the issue and tries to fix things. I can't believe I'm saying this, but Adam Sandler made the perfect rom-com.

Something borrowed has to be the most horrifying of romcoms. It’s literally about a woman having an affair with her best friend’s fiancée, and they to convince us that they were meant to be just because she didn’t tell her friend that she liked the guy and he was too chicken shit to break up with her. All the while the movie makes the best friend look like a stereotypical shallow woman who drinks a lot and sleeps around to justify that the mousy main character is the hero of the story when really she’s a homewrecker. The only person who calls them out on all this is John Krazinkski, and the poor guy gets hit in the nose for it.
@willemverheij34128 жыл бұрын
In most rom-coms the entire romance seems to be based on a lie. And in the third act its revealed, the other person freaks out and takes them back anyways. I'd like to see one where they actually reject the liar, like a normal person would do.
@JimmySteller Жыл бұрын
A lie is one thing. What really irks me is when a rom-com romance is based around something deeply unethical, like in "The Proposal" where Sandra Bullock is a boss forces her assistant to act as her fiancé so she doesn't get deported, threatening to ruin the assistant's career if he doesn't play along. Or that one where Sandra Bullock pretends to be the fiancée of a man with whom she's never interacted before, only to fall for his brother instead while the first guy is in a coma. Good lord, Sandra Bullock is worse than Julia Roberts when it comes to her rom-com characters...

I like the 'that's not kooky fun, that's evil' line and it's quite an effective one for getting across that you don't condone or feel good about a character's actions, even if you like the character and know it's exaggerated and/or for comedic reasons. (eg some of Amy's cruel heist tricks in Holt spying on people for the heist in B99 although the spying was more heist-like and less targeted/cruel in a sense than the therapist and coma tricks.)

"The Wedding Singer" is the only RomCom I liked since I started paying attention to details. Because: 1. The guy the girl was with originally was a bad man from the beginning. Not just when we needed to be ok with him getting jilted. And 2. The girl was an absolute doormat, as opposed to some other movies that try to hide that fact it was a part of her character and she came to terms with how miserable the relationship (with original guy) would make her irregardless of another guy waiting for her. I think she still needed the other guy there to leave the relationship though.
