In the original Peter Pan, Tinker Bell almost straight up murders Wendy on sight. Disney has a (bad) habit of neutering stories.
@JimmySteller
@JimmySteller 3 жыл бұрын
Tinker Bell still does that in the movie, though. Hell, the mermaids admit to trying to drown Wendy, and when Wendy tries to defend herself, Peter physically and verbally punishes her before going to save another woman who loves him and ignoring Wendy. Wow… it took me this long to realise just how messed up the story of Peter Pan is when it comes to 100% of the female characters.

Ok now do one on how children's cartoons today are teaching kids that adults are completely incompetent. Have you seen an educational kids show where the parents or adults in general roles of authority who aren't fumbling idiots who are screwing up and need to be saved by children? Seriously if I was a child growing up watching these things I would have the hardest time trusting or relying on adults for help with anything. To a degree I get it and agree that parents don't have all the right answers or make all the right decisions all the time. And the old ways of the pre 90's where kids were taught that adults decisions are absolute and unquestionable actually put children into harms way more than people admit. There has to be a middle ground on this that teaches kids that parents don't always know what's best but they have their reasons and they will be there for them when shit gets bad and they aren't on their own.

Uh, I thought a big part of "Hook" was that, viewed from an adult perspective, all the things you thought were so scary as a child--for instance, *being* an adult--aren't really as bad, and you just need to face it down. Hence the over-the-top Hook performance: he's not so menacing now, he's just kind of pathetic and annoying.

Sometimes I wish they made a movie or tv show where they showed it was smart to actually listen to our parents. I mean our parents for the most part understand you on a deeper level, you could probably learn at least something from them about life. But most movies glorify the idea that kids are always smarter than their parents. Is this just me?

For me that's To Kill a Mockingbird. Atticus doesn't do a lot of direct parenting on screen but is every scene it's clear that he's a wise adult and the children are children. The Disney Pinocchio is sort of that except Pinocchio's father isn't in the film that much. The parents in the incredibles are like that, adults trying and failing to keep the kids out of trouble but always supportive. In Cheaper by the Dozen the kids are a little neglected because the parents are pulled in so many directions, but on the whole they're good parents who try to keep their kids safe and respectful by giving reasonable rules and things are better when the kids listen. Edward Scissorhands has very very supportive foster(?) parents who take him in and keep him safe. There's a few if you look.

I was all on-board for this rant until near the end, when they imply Ducktails and Talespin didn't have any adults in them. I mean, yes, Muppet Babies only had Nanny, but Nanny kept the kids going in the right direction. But, it would be like saying "You know what I like about Gargoyles ? How it didn't have anyone from Star Trek doing the voices." Because that line would do NOTHING but annoy the people you're trying to cater to. I'm not going to take time to point out who is and isn't an adult in the Disney Afternoon cartoons, because if you're sitting through this, you probably know that. I'm just saying, why even bring it up ?

Also isnt the pt of that movie overall to say that its fun to be irresponsible sometimes but at the end of the day you still need your parents. Hey maybe the pt of all these isnt that adulthood sucks, but that adulthood doesnt mean that you have all your shit together and thats normal and ok

The thing people don't understand when they talk about how 'being an adult sucks' is that, yes it does, but it doesn't suck more than any other stage in your life. There's this assumption that the older you are the worse life gets- but by that logic being a toddler would be the best stage of all and being a toddler was terrible. Sure, you didn't have to cope with jobs, relationships, responsibilities or anything like that- but your pain threshold was so low that just tripping over could make you starts crying out in pain and a simple trip to the shops was so stressful that you'd often end up having a complete emotional meltdown, screaming and rolling around on the floor. When responsibility and work get you down, just thank God you've finally moved past the stage of your life where people could literally trip over you.

Wow. What a nostalgia trip. I actually saw every movie mentioned at least twice (except for Spy Kids & Agent Cody Banks) as a kid. Two that also came to mind: Getting Even With Dad and Carpool.

Great episode per usual. However, small note: the way they all said "Hook" together makes me believe that this is written and not just an extemporaneous debate on pop culture among 4 friends who happen to be writers about pop culture.

Not being good at "adulting" is a hyperbolic joke and it's only used by brand new adults like college students who are still learning how to function in an adult environment

Ailish Forner There's no such thing as an adult. There is no age where you become this fabled always responsible, all knowing, "Adult". Life is just a series of events you learn from. Shit happens, you learn how to deal with it, then some other shit happens, and you learn how to deal with that. On and on until you die. We're all just a bunch of really old kids trying our best.

it's really frustrating because I want to be alerted when a new After Hours or OPCD or Escorts or whatever, but there are so many videos produced by Cracked that i'm NOT interested in, just because of what they are about, that if I do i'll be inundated by alerts that I don't want. with some channels I don't mind that, but ones like Cracked are essentially studios with tons of series and people working on them all essentially just coming under one name and youtube chanel, and there's too many to handle as a result. i'm subscribed but I never get any alerts because apparently I need to be alerted for ALL of them to get any at all and it sucks
