William Windom gave an amazing performance in this episode... you could feel his helplessness... the horror at dooming his crew...

When I was first watching this I was six years old and the terrible special effect of the Doomsday Machine did not stop me from being absolutely sold on this man's performance and scared to death of whatever had scared him so badly. I had nightmares about that thing for weeks

as someone who's deeply religious there's something so powerful about seeing a presumed atheist broken down to absolute terror believing he saw the devil itself.

They would often write other Starfleet captains in the show to either appear very weak/traumatized (Decker), incompetent (Stocker), or completely insane (Garth), so that Captain Kirk would stand out more and appear to be the better captain.

Why do I have the feeling Shatner had something to do with that policy? :)

This is the best acting in the entire series by anyone. Windom said he hammed it up a bit and didnt take the part that serious but my god was this totally believable and frightening at the same time.

This is the first time that an American TV series used "hell" as in "opposite of Heaven" in a non-religious context. "The City on the Edge of Forever" was the first time "hell" was used as an expletive on American TV.
