If I’m being completely honest, I actually don’t really struggle with staying motivated - I think I was blessed with good brain chemistry or something. But I DO STRUGGLE with staying positive. I’m super fucking hard on myself, and I often feel like the only road forward is the road OUT. And that is a defeatist attitude that will sometimes drag me down for days. When I’m in that dank awful pit and my brain is stuck on a “fuck this, I’m done” spiral, I try to go back to the concept in this video - the mission. so far, it’s worked for me. I figured I’d share it, because I know a lot of folks struggle with this, too

I do something similar to what you describe. My inner monologue is "I'm sick of busting my ass." I have always been very critical of myself so even though I have a lot of self discipline, I'm also very prone to self doubt and that often leads to giving up too easily. I really appreciated your video today because it helped pull me out of the negative mindset that was threatening to pull me down...again.

Jack you are a master of inspiration and motivation (considering how much you've been able to make!), for which I look up to you, but I do think you miss the point a bit here. I hear your chain of reasoning like this: Why make art? -> art is what makes life worth living -> when we're stuck we should ask ourselves why we do it -> by reading the stories about how much people love what we do -> making people happy = inspiration I think this is flawed, because it reinforces the idea that if other people like what we do, it's "good". And the seeking to write a "good" song that loads of people like, is the biggest inspiration killer I know of. Nothing wrong with asking what our why is, but my suggestion for HOW to ask ourselves would be: Why do we do it? What do we ourselves want to learn and explore? When we're learning something that excites us, it truly doesn't matter if we play for 0 people or 1 million. The thing we want to investigate, is our why. I think you're extremely good at this, and that's why you're able to stay constantly motivated, that's what your "good brain chemistry" is about :) Many of us don't yet have a library of motivational and encouraging comments to use. Especially those of us who mostly play for 0 people. But I think anyone can learn to stay constantly inspired, it's just a matter about finding out what excites us! :) Love, Petter

Thank you so much for this video. On Sunday, our dog died very suddenly. He was my constant companion in my art studio and practically everywhere else. In the last couple of days, I’ve asked myself how to go on creating videos while I feel so sad and am experiencing so much grief. And you helped me answer that. As a early-stage KZbinr, it's soooo easy to get sucked into extrinsic validation. One of the most powerful ways I applied this video is BEFORE I decide what to create: I ask "If only my loved ones watched this, what would I want to create just for the joy of it?" Then, it's worth it no matter the reception. ❤️

Kids to feeds and rent to pay and ready to give up my dream of being a musician/ youtuber and start some crappy job just to survive...Then Patreon came along...Say no more. I now own the very house and land I was actually renting back then. As one muso to another Jack, you have no idea how many of us hold you in the highest respect for creating this platform. Thanks Jack, way back when I was making jewellery and my mom was painting watercolours, we would go to craft markets and swap stalls. I would sell hers and she would sell mine. It's so much easier to praise someone else's work! She got a bit tetchy in her older years, but when I have to describe what I do, sometimes I imagine, when my mom was still happy, how would she have described this? And I say that.

God damn... I forget how much positive impact, what I do had on me when I was younger and aspiring to do what I do. And not just the work that was acclaimed, smaller comics and games, long forgotten... Thanks for this...and for everything you do, even if I haven't pushed publish my own page yet. Because your platform allows some of my favourite creators to create consistently and supply me with the conetn I consume to keep me, and many others, inspired.

Damn, your videos are always on point. This one actually made me tear up, the anecdote plus the way you said like 3 or 4 times the word "why" kinda hit me hard. I don't know why but I consider myself a creator, even though I don't really ever finish anything. I won't say that your videos are inspiring, because that would imply that I actually follow through on that inspiration, but they do hit a nerve that other stuff doesn't. It makes me wanna ask the opposite question of your "why". "Why not?" . Why am i not creating? Why don't I feel like I can make those pieces of art (or anything) that would make someone write a comment like mine, or like those? Why do I feel so disconnected to everyone and everything?

But this has given me the smidgen of confidence I needed to keep at it. Thanks.

In highschool each kid in our grade was sat down in a large room and asked to sit around the edge. We were given an envelope and asked to write our name on it. We were also given a stack of pieces of paper that fit the envelope and a pen. We were then asked to pass our envelopes 10 spaces to the left. Each did this and we ended up with an envelop in front of us with a fellow student's name on it. We were then asked to write something positive about that student on a piece of paper and place it into the envelope. If you really don't like the person and absolutely cannot think of something positive, write nothing. Then, pass the envelopes around again. And again, write something positive about the kid whose envelope lands in your lap and pop it inside. And keep it anonymous unless you truly want the receiver to know it was you who wrote it. Once done, we had around 40 pieces of paper in our envelopes. Each piece of paper had something nice about you written on it. And we were told, if we ever feel down in life, get out that envelope and read through it, read all he positive things people have said about it you. THAT, sir, is what your #love document reminds me of when applied to a group instead of on an individual level.
