Thank you for sharing this story. But I disagree with the premise of this video. You didn't do anything wrong. Those "journalists" were just psychopaths with an audience and they were publishing misleading information about you for fast easy clickbait cash. There's a reason why Gawker got sued into bankruptcy. I also recognize that you, as the CEO of Patreon, may not be able to state things as plainly as I just did without consequences. 🤷

Not disclosing he was CEO of Patreon was a bad move. Not an unethical, terrible move. Just not a good move, because it opened him up to speculation that he was hiding something. If Jack had disclosed he was CEO of Patreon, the story could have been completely different. Look, we spent $12K on this tour, but we gained x number of patrons who are pledging $x per song we release. Jack could have looked like the business genius we now know him to be. Or maybe not. Maybe it would have gone completely different. It's good to think about how things could have gone, to inform how we do things going forward.

Hey Jack. I'm 72 & love your passion for both Patreon & Pomplamoose. I love what you & Natalie create & I truly love that you have given KZbin creators the ability to make a living bringing their content to us. Haters gonna hate, screw 'em. Be true to yourself & be good to people & you will never go wrong.

Yo, I'm 64 & I'm smitten by them too. I tripped over Pomplamoose about 6 months ago (Bust your kneecaps) and have watched dozens of their videos without knowing that Jack is CEO of Patreon until I saw this. Patreon is something I have come to believe in (and which is long overdue). Jack & Nataly's openness and honesty about both the creative process and the business model is educational and refreshing. After watching this video, I came here to write pretty much EXACTLY what you had already written. But you did it so well, all I can say is "Whatever Jack says goes twice for me". Keep up the good work and may you all prosper with the fruits of your passionate hard labor. I'm a process guy and I love your music and everything that goes into making it.

Check it out Jack. Patreon and Pomplamoose are separate identities. The people who would criticize you for being the CEO of Patreon, and reflect that back on whether Pomplamoose is financially successful are the problem with the internet. When you said that the Pomplamoose fans are what came to your defense. THOSE, those are the only people that actually matter to you. Your fan base is everything. The rest is just noise. Don't let these people get you down. You shouldn't be ashamed of divulging that or not. I found your band because of your music. I don't care what your "full time" job is. I don't care if your net worth is $1.00 or $100,000,000,000.00. I venture to guess that your real fans, they don't care either. Keep up the killer music. I love your stuff. Ironically for me, that blog post about that tour was how I found out about Pomplamoose. It wasn’t until recently that I learned you were the CEO of Patreon. My first reaction when I connected those dots was “this dude is playing 4D chess, he’s got a cool story.” It also made me comfortable with the fact that I make a good living outside of music, but music is my creative art that I want people to identify me with more than my day job. Keep doing you, my man. You’re an inspiration.

Thanks so much Jack for your absurd transparency. The "mistake" is one thing (although I think this was really not a super clear mistake on your part while you were at it), but the interpretation of that being a mal-intent is truely horrendous! It's like they were misrepresenting your thoughts and intentions, something to which only you have true acces, still other people hiJacked it (sorry, bad pun). This story really helps with my way less big kind of a storm on a community post, where I formulated poll answers and though to be a bit funny. It was about opinion on what the line was between plagiarism, so kinda fragile topic, and people saw in the "funny extra's", which took a bit of a fun dig at stereotypes in the genre of jazz, that I tried to control the outcome of the poll to what I hoped it to be. Totally not comparable with the gravity of your story, but I guess some people really are preset to view something from the worst possible outcome, while ignorance (or bad taste in jokes) might suffice. If more people would apply Hanlon's Razor, this wouldn't happen I guess: 'Never ascribe to malice that which is adequately explained by incompetence or ignorance'.

I love you, CEO of Patreon Jack! Lol. And the people who have been here with you and know you do not question your ethics. But I know it's hard, like, the way you communicate on this channel really speaks to me and really helps motivate me in my personal and artistic journey. I find your attitude, ideas and accomplishments very inspiring, and the way you speak, the enthusiasm, it's captivating, to me. To _me,_ because I guess I think in a lot of the same ways you do. We are dreamers, never-give-uppers, artists. Most people are taught, by their parents, people who fear for them and want the best for them, not to take risks, to walk the safe path. We tend to reject that, and that means that there are a lot of people who don't relate to us, and are even adamantly against one of the core fundamentals of our being: to dream big, work extremely hard, and to reframe failures as lessons. We can't please everyone, the internet is everyone (a lot of angry, unfiltered everyone). Not to mention, controversy gets views. But look at what you have accomplished because of who you are. I know you've already learned this lesson, but don't ever let their hate change the parts of you that you love.

FWIW, you are one of the people that gives me hope and inspires me the most. TBH, I don't really know much about your personal life, but the joy and fulfillment you get from music collaboration is bursting out of every video you're part of (all 147 bands you play with lol). Plus, you launched one of the most influential companies in the world around a positive idea. Seemingly, it has changed whole sectors of the art world and the lives of so many people who would otherwise get overlooked, exploited, or discouraged from their passion. The creative community never had so many of its members fed, sheltered, and free from micromanagers. It has implications on all of our lives. It appears that everything in your life is perfectly aligned with your own values. That's a unbelievable achievement, it's hard just to fight being corrupted, to not compromise any value... That part I've proudly managed, but I'm yet to build a replacement, and I've been labeled by the system a whole bunch of things that communicate, bad apple. That happens to many, but seeing you, knowing that it's possible, is helping and inspiring. I hope you'll be able to have a show in Omaha soon, Much love.

Watching you grow from the solo musician that I watched as a university freshman in 2008-2009 to the CEO of Patreon has been pretty wacky to say the least. Knowing your creative background and humble beginnings has made your explosive success such an interesting contrast to compare. I never really doubted your good intent, even when you'd blunder. You're an artist at heart who helped solve a problem that was affecting not only other artists, but the very things you were struggling with. Obviously my opinion is just a whisper in the wind and I don't know you personally, but I am proud of you (and proud of any artist really who finds their way in this crazy world).

I felt a little bad a few months back when I called out Nat for posting a ‘free album’ post to Pomplamoose that failed to disclose it required a paid Patreon contribution, and didn’t disclose the connections to Patreon either. It has to be tough to have the two so entwined, when you want both to succeed on their own footing. In Nat’s credit, the post was quickly updated to address these concerns. Personally, I’ve never been much of a fan of music but Pomplamoose honestly changed that. The video story format and having only two people produce made it easy to follow along, understand, and feel empowered by the quirky and fun tunes that anyone could honestly make. It represented a huge amount of transparency, that fundamentally helped me appreciate the art being created. It’s been a bit sad to see a transition away from this, yet I’m glad to see through videos like this that there is still a value from you two for transparency and listening to your audiences.

I have been dipping in and out of Pomplamoose for a few years and did not pick up on the Patron thing, my first reaction was how cool is that, I work in tech and from my experience a healthy number of musicians, artists and engineers. making the tech space such a creative environment, also that you are not simply valued or limited to just one thing.

The first thing I was told at a business course was to plan your exit strategy from a start up business. This struck me as very counter intuitive, but the reality is that whether or not a business is a success, sooner or later it will carry on without you. No one is indispensable! However, you can carry on making music until they put you in a box. You just have to realise where your priorities lie.

Didn't know you were the ceo of patreon when I supported pomplemoose through patreon. Good to find out. Nice learning points from the video.

Jack, Thanks for your bravery. Always an inspiration. PS - I’ll proudly write “CEO of Patreon” under your signature on my t-shirt from the First Ever Tour (though it’s a bit faded now).
