Lazy Dog Farm

Күн бұрын

We have another busy day in the backyard garden and we need some rain badly! We'll be harvesting the rest of our softneck garlic and comparing the silverskin types to the artichoke types we harvested earlier.
We'll also start harvesting some of our leeks so we can make one of our favorite meals from the backyard grocery store -- leek and potato soup! Finally, we'll check a few of our potato plants to see if we can gather a few for our soup. It's tater time at Lazy Dog Farm!

How can Abram get both cuter and also more handsome every time I see him? Seriously, in our family our old man didn’t want us anywhere near anything he was doing. It was bad when we were kids and it’s worse now he’s gone. Not only is Abram a good helper, but he is learning that he contributes some valuable effort towards the family. And it is a strong bond with you. A very positive and happy memory he will have forever.

I've been a follower of your gardening techniques since deep into the Hoss days. Witnessed the transition from the blue stuff to AgroThrive and Nature Safe and Azera. No-till plots, cover crops and spicy mustard. Arch trellis, drop string trellis, chicken tractor, fire rings. Broken back, Brooklyn behind the wheel hoe. Comparative trials of tomatoes, figs, okree and many more cultivars, all grown in a spirit of enquiry and adventure. Look at the results of your yields and produce quality improvements over these few years. Those onions, those leeks, that garlic. Even when you fail you get right back on the horse. It's been a treat to follow along. Many thanks. Jasmine Street Farm

I bet he'll remember harvesting those potatoes with you for the rest of his life. You're growing way more than a garden there Travis. Nice work. I planted a good garden this year and we're getting some produce, but the only water it got this year so far is what I put on it. We got about 1/4 inch of rain one time at the end of March and no other rain. Tap water can't replace rain, especially with melons and squash, well everything really.

Drain as much as you can and then drop the single layers in hot oil. They fry up for some of the best tator chips you'll ever eat!!

I grew Red Viking and Kennebec white potatoes this year (Zone 9B). I was very happy with the Vikings, harvesting over 60 pounds of big, beautiful taters. The Kennebecs, however, produced less, were smaller, and a bit soft. When I processed them for canning, I noticed a little darkening in the center of the Kennebecs---not sure what that was! Still and all, I had a pretty good first year of growing 'taters!

Please tell us if you liked the taste and texture of the potatoe that had so many tubers. I went with the Yukon golds and Pontiac reds this year and they did pretty good but not even close to the one plant you harvested. @@LazyDogFarm Continued thinking about there Multiplying onion, I have some I started from seed last year and I'm wondering if the old timers dug them up completely every years so that they do not get too big ??? I might try that, lift then all, re-plant young singles back in and see if we can cure the larger ones and use like regular onions and use the small thin ones like scallions. Maybe the right way is to dig 1/2 of them every year, don't know, none of my ancestors are alive to ask. Maybe you can find an old time with some ancient history on growing, digging, using and storing. Peace, W

The natural chemicals for biofumigation are in the mustard leaves. That's the trick. Grow a thick crop of mustard and incorporate it into the soil.

As always, great video and info! I’m close to you all, so I watch every video to learn and be better within my zone. I noticed you mentioned ants around one potato plant, I had 3 30ft rows of Taters and I’ll be darned at least a third of them were killed by fire ants moving in and eating them all. Any recommendations for any control in the potato plants outside of just the mustard cover?(I even tried a spraying of the dreaded 7 this year).

We had a good amount of ants in the soil when digging more taters today. They hadn't eaten any taters or plants, but they were there. Spinosad can be used for fire ants, or sprinkle an ant bait between the rows.
