Nice, AKA the 2-2 / 2-3 rule: play on strings 6 and 5, shift that pattern 2 strings down, 2 frets up (2-2) and play it on strings 4 and 3. Now shift down 2 strings and 3 frets up (2-3) to play the pattern on strings 2 and 1. This trick works for ANY scale, lick, arpeggio, you name it.

I appreciate the lesson but have one critique: if you want to keep things simple, why introduce 2 patterns at all? Obviously the "half tone / whole tone" pattern suffices for major and minor (or mode for that matter). Place it at fret two and you're in either E minor or G major; place it at fret 6 and you're in B major or G# minor). The same could be done with the other pattern in a completely separate lesson without clouding the issue. To make it even more easily understandable to the beginner, maybe just introduce the whole-tone pattern as the major pattern, as that starts on the root and can be placed properly just by knowing the notes on the 6th string. You could then explain that this pattern can be used for the minor scale by starting it three frets higher than the root on the 6th string. You could make it even easier and introduce a minor scale on the "whole tone / half tone" pattern, as it starts with the root on the 6th string... For instance, G minor starts on fret 3 string 6, and follows the repeating "whole/half" pattern. Use the same pattern for any major scale, explaining that the root is on the 3rd note of the pattern...
