I was part of Team Cougar Bait at Lemons in Toledo in 08. About an hour into the race our first driver got turned into the concrete barrier and smashed up the right front. We spent hours rebuilding the car, a Saab, even getting a lot of help from Team Sofa King racing who parked next to us in the pits(They turned out to be a Pratt & Lambert Corvette racing pit crew) and using my van to pull out the subframe. We moved it enough to run either a radiator or an intercooler for the turbo. We put the radiator in and finally got back on track. Overnight it was cool, but when the sun came up the engine started to get hot. We ended up parking it for the final few hours, then getting back on track with about 15 minutes to go. We finished and we won the Most Heroic Comeback trophy. A few years later we went to Nelson Ledges, OH, a miserable, cold and wet weekend. 30 minutes into the race our engine exploded. The engine had been rebuilt by someone who used gallons of blue RTV instead of gaskets and it clogged the oil pickup. Some local said said he knew of an engine that would work and was for sale. So two of guys jumped into a pickup and drove off into the wilds of North East Ohio with a complete stranger never to be seen again(OK, that's not true). They were gone about 4 hours but eventually returned with an engine. We worked for 7 hours, but the new engine wouldn't work with our transmission. We spent the remainder of the weekend drunk. Good times!

He sold it when I was 11 for $14,000 (aud). Fast forward 6 years, we see the car in the yard of the guy that brought it completely stripped and sitting in a paddock behind a boat shed. Shell was completely stuffed, busted glass everywhere the works. Made the old man shed a manly tear.

As a part of my job, I deal with people who want to make specialty investments. This ranges from pieces of art and jewelry, horses, and also cars. Along with this comes people who want to invest in race cars and race teams. This might sound pretty niche and it sort of is, but you would be amazed at how many wealthy investors are just dying to invest in race cars and race teams. I think I've done about 50 of these deals, and I can only think of one that actually ended up being a profitable investment. I'm not gonna get into how these deals are generally structured, but when he says no one makes money in racing, he really isn't kidding. The one deal I remember making a profit was an older gentleman who invested in a GT4 team by purchasing 75% of an Aston GT4 and then putting $100,000 into operational expenses for the team. Apparently the guy was very well connected because within a month the team had secured several large sponsors worth about $150,000 per year. I think the team ran for about three years like this and then sold off the car and everything else and the guy ended up making about $90,000 in profit.

Corruption and cheating is rife in sport and other organised activities. Lemons is open about it. If you exceed the budget or you show dubious evidence, it's bargaining time: To avoid a ton of penalty laps, you need one or more of the following: 1. Novel and humorous theme (not Blues Brothers, Family Truckster, easy race livery), with quality compensating for a lack of novelty. 2. Unusual or notorious car (korean sedans, Chrysler Avanti etc) 3. Bribe the judges with food, beverages or relevant gifts (e.g a rare part for a judge's project car, suitcase of spaghetti-ohs), and/or food, beverages etc for the marshalls 4. Have a very poor chance of running well (e.g Roadkill) or driving well (e.g Car & Driver) 5. The Epic Concept: twin-engined Honda Odyssey; Ford Contour with a Mustang body and a Hoonicorn paintjob; Viper-enginged Rolls Royce; Upside-down Corvette, sideways VW Microbus, 4-poster bed, "The Spirit Of Lemons" Cessna-bodied Toyota minivan (these last 4 were all by SpeedyCop).
