As someone who is starting a STEM fast track access course in a few weeks, and considering whether to move on to a Named OU Degree vs an Open Degree this was super helpful, thanks! I had no idea an Open Degree wasn’t necessarily accredited, and the option to change over last minute is also great! Thanks for this content it’s super helpful!

I just started my journey with the OU, and I love hearing about other people's experiences. I'm halfway through my first module but already it has exceeded my expectations. I know for sure that I'm going to love it.

So good to hear your enjoying it, I miss it so much! I'm doing my masters through Derby University and honestly there's no comparison. If the ou masters was accredited I would 100% do it through them. Good luck with the rest of your module!

Ta for that. Thinking of going for an Open degree, for after my Access Module, mostly as this is for my own personal benefit, rather than for a specific career! I can then, more like, go on to a named degree for my Postgraduate one!

I've originally picked Ba Hons Business Management with Spanish but when I've just sat and thought about it, I felt that business mgt part was quite "general" if you know what I mean....so decided to swap into Open Degree- picked Spanish (which was a "must" for me) and to mix it with accountancy....so gearing myself up for "only" 11 modules...ehhh

Thank you! I'm half way through due to having to take a break whilst the kids were off school and everything, but can't complain as they waived any fees that you usually get if you're in the middle of a module. Can't wait to get stuck back in!

Hi I am now in the last year of a masters degree with the university of Derby and recently got a job in the criminal justice system supporting offenders with a range of issues including mental health, drug and alcohol misuse, homelessness etc. I wouldn't have been able to do any of it without my open uni degree so I highly highly recommend it! I would have carried on and done my masters with the open uni aswell if their msc psych was accredited by the bps as I enjoyed it that much. Good luck x

Hi yes I finished with a 2.1 and am now half way through a masters degree with the university of Derby. For me the bachelors degree took a long time but that was because I took breaks and was mainly part time but i loved it. Its such a huge subject so you get to learn about all different kinds of things such as evolution, neurobiology, criminology as well as the clinical side. It's not easy though and if you want to carry on with it expect a lot of statistics and endless reading!

No I've always worked best on my own anyway but they do have regular in person lectures and meet ups at local universities. The course I'm on now has weekly zoom calls and a week long residential so the physical interactions are there they just aren't mandatory

It’s good if you struggled to get previous entry requirements and if you have little time on your hands, but sorry to say it’s not better than a regular degree. It’s still good though considering anyone can do it so don’t let that get you down 🙂
@SelfEmployedStudentMum
@SelfEmployedStudentMum 4 жыл бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by that last part, I'm certainly not down on anything? If you are not going into a specific post grad qualification that requires a named degree as an entry requirement then yes it is 100% the exact same as any other degree.

Where's the evidence to suggest it isn't at least the same as a traditional university degree? I know people who went to a traditional university then did the OU and there's little difference, but depends on what context really lol. Also depends on the subject too. OU doesn't have CS like a traditional university does. You have 2 math modules to choose unlike CS where its very theory heavy involving several math modules. It's no better in terms on the value basically
