🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:05 🍗 The significance of dietary protein in weight management - Difficult to gain weight from overeating protein compared to fats or carbs, - Protein impacts muscle protein synthesis and metabolic machinery, - Suggested intake: 0.7 to 1.0 grams per pound of ideal body weight. 01:40 🥔 Importance and source of carbohydrates in a diet - Carbohydrates often misunderstood, - Recommended sources include fruits, vegetables, and complex carbohydrates, - Suggests a balanced 1:1 ratio of protein to carbohydrates based on calorie needs. 03:15 🏃‍♂️ Adjusting carbohydrate intake based on activity levels - The average American's high carb intake coupled with sedentary lifestyle is problematic, - Increasing carbohydrate intake should correlate with exercise, - Recommended not to exceed 40-50 grams of carbohydrates without exercise due to insulin response. 04:00 🥑 Caloric distribution among macronutrients - Setting a protein goal of 0.7 to 1 gram per pound, - The RDA for carbohydrates is 130 grams, but adjustments can be made based on activity and metabolic health, - Fat intake can be calculated as 0.32 to 1 gram per pound, preferably from polyunsaturated sources. @@apeinto5637 I agree. I am wondering if the range is multiplied by your current weight or your goal body weight? In a visual person and need clarification, sorry! Also, concerning the protein, are we talking about the amount of protein in protein sources or the actual scale weight of your protein in grams or ounces? Apparently, there is a difference per what I saw online. How should we measure our fats: kitchen scale, measuring spoons or go by the product label labels. This goes for anything we eat! Thank you

People are obsessed with protein, carbs and their ratios....and people (like the good doctor) make good money via the internet in keeping us locked into being obsessed. And you also have people keeping us obsessed with these fads diets like carnivore, keto, vegan or this eating one meal a day type of crap. I remember about 50 years ago people predominantly just ate a variety of foods but they were all whole foods. There was very little processed foods in the diet. Soups and stews were a big thing in our family. Or things like boiled potatoes, veg and boiled meat was common. The diet was balanced and the cooking method was healthy. Nobody was obsessed with carbs, meats or whatever. Bad health from obesity didn't seem like a problem. The main scourge of health was tobacco and alcohol at the time. Then processed foods, big supermarket chains, fast food chains started to get more popular. It coincided with life getting busier, so people started getting lazier. Instead of taking the time to cook and boil those wholesome family meals, we turned to those 15 min packaged processed meals in the microwave or starting frying everything quickly in a pan. Or we were grabbing something in the fast food outlets or those junk food sandwiches in delis. And then we were treating ourselves to all those sugary treats on top of all that. That sort of living destroyed my own health but thankfully I got back to keeping it simple and start eating whole foods again about 8 years ago. I've had no health issues since and I maintain a healthy weight. And its effortless. I don't have to count calories or obsess about how many carbs or protein I'm getting or worried if I eat a few apples because I'm carnivore or worried about eating a little bit of meat if I'm a plant based eater. And obviously I'm getting enough of everything if I'm still working in a physical job and I'm working out 3 days a week and exercising most days at the age of 62 and I'm still maintaining good weight. I'm too busy living and enjoying life to be obsessed with all that crap about measuring out my carbs and protein at every meal.

I have to agree with both comments here. I feel the same way. I am trying to lose some pounds. Being honest, there’s just an overload of info concerning weight loss, and healthy eating. There’s too many opposing views as well. So much of our food sources are terribly depleted of nutrients due to food companies wanting to make as much money as possible. When you read food labels, it’s mostly chemicals. Kid’s breakfast cereal is nothing but sugar and the milk as well. No wonder the children have learning disorders, ADHD perhaps, uncontrollable in school. Growing up, mom never cooked these frozen meals or out of a box. Everything was cooked from scratch. It was homemade and we counts sit around the house and watch tv all day. We had to go out and play. So we got plenty of exercise. Children who didn’t, were usually the overweight kid and eating lists of candies and cookies. Mom had a vegetable garden. Most times, we would go to the farms and pick peas, beans, okra, apples, nuts… When we got home, ladies in the neighborhood were invited over to help shell the peas and beans and they were given a portion for their household! We had to do yard work, painting the trim, watering the grass… It was something physical to do always. Personally, I am so tired of all these diets. I always heard of you eat too much protein, it can damage your kidneys. I just want to lose this weight in a no nonsense way. Just tired!!

i'm eating around 150 grams of protein. i currently weigh 172 pounds - i'm pretty fit and perform strength training 4 times a week and 1 day of cardio/zone 2 training. if i keep my carbs to a protein 1 to 1 ratio, that would equal to 150 grams of carbs, which in total is 1200 calories from protein and carbs. let's say i want to increase muscle and gain some weight - should the extra calories come from fat or carbs? (considering i need about 2500 a day to be in a surplus). i ask because increase my carb intake dramatically means i would have to eat probably an extra 150 grams or more which could, as you mentioned in the video, have a more robust insulin response. if the calories come from fat, my lipids could be affected negatively. what would be the best approach here?

On a somewhat related note, Plains Tribes lived almost exclusively on bison meat. Maybe they augmented their diet with berries and roots. But most of their calories came from grass fed bison. There is no evidence of vitamin deficiency. This has always been significant. I used to read the journals of early trappers who took note of this diet and upon changing over from the traditional European diet to the Plains diet, they noted no ill effects. We read where they gobbled intestines raw and found them delicious. I am not able to go full on carnivore. My digestion requires at least 30 grams of fiber. That being said, I aim for 200 grams of protein and 100 grams of carbohydrates. Target calories 2000-2400 and I lift quite heavy 4 days a week. 6 ft 230# working to get back to 220# after a little bulk to break a strength plateau on bench press.

I think Plain tribesmen were not geniuses in nutrition....a lot of people look to our ancestors to what they were eating at the time and think that they were masters in nutrition. That's a false assumption. They eat what they did because they had no other choice. That was all they had to survive on. If there was no bison or plants available they would have eaten themselves just like the people in the Andes Air Crash to survive. So what if the tribesmen had ended up in that scenario, would you have taken that to been some sort of nutritional genius on their behalf and have eaten humans in your diet? If there was a lot more choices available to those tribesmen, they would have eaten differently....no question about it. I hear this "ancestor" BS all the time. Actually if you go back even further, most of our Paleo ancestors died of starvation before 33 years old and would have eaten dirt if they got away with it. They probably eat more humans than wild animals. Thankfully, most of us are not in survival mode and we have an abundance of good choices that are more beneficial to our health than what any ancestors had. We can knock ourselves out trying to live like them but why bother? We can live and have been living a healthy life with a lot of different good foods in our diet for centuries. Unfortunately us human conjured up a lot of processed junk to eat too that we fallen foul to and we have to avoid them. But its no different to technology.....there is technology that help us enormously to live better than out ancestors and there is technology that can destroy us.

@@patrickokeeffe4787 You are reading your own bias into assuming I said something I did not say. Nowhere did I extol the virtues of eating an almost exclusive diet of bison. I merely say that they did. Choice, wisdom, virtue had nothing to do with it. I merely stated the facts that they lived on bison. Then, when Mountain Men came out to interact with the Plains Tribes, they were introduced to the bison diet. I then paraphrased what they wrote in their journals. They remarked that to their surprise, they suffered no ill effects from the diet. In fact they noticed a surprising exhilaration upon eating even the intestines raw.

@@aubietigerton1807 I was noting in your story about you trying to be carnivore and maybe the reasoning behind it. Seems to me from your story that you think it is healthy apparently based on just the journals of trappers. So your evidence is mostly based on hearsay in journals. But what is the truth IN YOUR OWN EXPERIENCE about solely eating bison or meat? Well you already gave it. You couldn't eat meat or bison on its own because its unhealthy for you as you obviously don't function properly. So my question has already been answered about solely eating meat..... thank you very much.

I was presenting evidence from two scientists who observed a large population of people eating a carnivore diet and having no ill effects. I am not endorsing it. But they were two scientists making first person observations. This is a valid scientific survey. You need to understand what research is. This was a real time experiment being conducted on a large population of real subjects. Furthermore, they are not the only subjects to have similar results. Look at Native peoples in the Arctic who lived on fish, seals, and whale blubber. They were not consuming any fresh fruit or vegetables. But they did not experience scurvey or rickets.

That's what so many people believe - it's a myth. For example a small meal of 3/4 cup of quinoa before cooking, 1/4 cup cooked black beans and 1/2 cup of frozen carrots and peas gives you 21.8 grams of protein and that's without the many other things that you would usually place on your plate. Let's not forget that dessert that you might have after your meal. It's one big lie that the meat industry has spread and wants us to believe. I can very easily get 100 grams of protein a day on a WFPB diets without even trying or thinking about it. Also don't fall into the myth that we have to balance this food with that food to get the proper protein (amino acid) balance. As long as we eat a variety of WFPB foods, all amino acids in the protein we consume throughout the day mix together and gives us all the complete protein we need. One more thing, all plants contain all essential and non essential amino acids - if they didn't, they would never exist...

I’m soooooo tired of doctors on KZbin all declaring they know the perfect diet and macros for EVERYONE! That’s impossible as we are all unique and have very specific nutritional needs for each person . Ditch processed food stick to real food then self experiment to discover your personal best diet !

Your presentation is outdated and misleading. Calories in and calories out is not applicable to everyone. There is no such thing as a “best diet” since we are all very different. It is not helpful to calculate proteins in relation to body weight without considering the percentage of body fat, the high prevalence of insulin resistance and the importance of low carbohydrate intake and intermittent fasting in order to lower insulin levels and trigger autophagy.

Calories in and calories out is absolutely applicable to everyone. You’re not exempt from the laws of thermodynamics. Sorry, bud. And there is no such thing as the “importance of low carbohydrate diet”. You’ve been brainwashed into thinking carbs are bad. Lastly, Intermittent fasting is one of the worst ways to trigger autophagy. Want to know the best way to trigger autophagy? Calorie deficit (even high carb) and exercise. Those two things blow fasting out the water and it’s not even close.

@@max8141 as a physician having accompanied dozens of patients, calories in and out are definitely applicable for individuals in good health but not applicable in case of insulin resistance that is now at the root of the metabolic syndrome that is producing type 2 diabetes and obesity in some 2 billion humans on the planet.

@@max8141 you most definitely do not reverse insulin resistance by merely reducing calorie intake nor increasing calorie consumption. If you ever manage that with a patient I will nominate you for a Nobel prize. You are merely repeating old myths that breed deception and guilt. Do some reading instead of blurting fallacy Your prescriptions are valid for 80% of humanity that is not yet insulin resistant, but at the present rate the WHO predicts 50% of insulin resistance in 2035. We cannot prescribe an ideal diet for all mankind, whatever the age or physical activity or condition, any more than we can prescribe the same size of shoes or eyeglasses.

@@anewlifestirring hahahaha okay. Decades and mountains of mountains of research show otherwise. You may be a physician, but you are clearly no scientist. What she said wasn’t outdated. Your thinking is just unfounded, and that was beyond clear in your amateurism displayed here. Go read some literature and, specifically, meta analyses of experimental trials showing a simple caloric deficit to decrease insulin resistance. You’re barking up the wrong tree here, bubs. Any time you go up against science, you lose
