Every day, I hear another account of how Russian "soldiers" have treated POW and civilians. I cannot find my way to any conclusion other than to be convinced that the Russian military, and indeed Russian society, are utterly irredeemable. There can be no punishment, no suffering, no poverty for Russians that would be sufficient to pay for the evil that they have brought to bear on Ukraine. I pray that they begin to feel that suffering and poverty sooner, rather than later. Slava Ukraini! God bless the United Kingdom! From Utah, USA.

So when the Ukrainians were attacking the separatists and shelling Eastern Ukraine as well as removing all Russian language etc as far back as 2004 and Ukraine refused to implement the Minsk agreements and killed thousands of civilians and separatist militia, when the coup happened and the previous president was ousted, when Russia wanted to negotiate and Angela Merkel signed the Minsk agreements not in good faith but to play for time whilst nato arms and trains 100,000 Ukrainians soldiers and the entire collective west is happy to trickle weapons into Ukraine and continue the war as long as it takes, to the last Ukrainian... Its Russia that's aggressive. The agreements and promises made when the soviet Union fell were broken and the needless of expansion of nato has been opposed by Russia for more than 30 years but was also non negotiable. Nato that carpet bombed a country in Europe in 1990 and killed tens of thousands of civilians and whose countries have perpetrated over 100 military interventions since 1990 and left 70 million displaced by war, has broken countless peace agreements and has perpetuated poverty with economic warfare across the globe. Libya, Iraq, Afghanistan, Serbia, the list goes on and on. Helping the Saudis by supplying weapons, Intel and support in the Yemeni war. Currently funding the kurdish rebels in the middle East has funded many other terror groups including Al qaeda in the 1980s, the last time Russia had a war that wasn't on its borders... So yes. Those monsters. Maybe value the lives of the Ukrainians more than the land they lived on? Few wars have ever been truly necessary. And of all countries involved only one of them has started two world wars and killed over 10million civilians and unspeakable atrocities.

Been listening for a while now from Kyiv while in the military. I have to disagree on the subject that their airstrikes aren't working because we shoot most of them down. They are achieving their goal of destroying vital infrastructure, even if ineffectively. But many people in the west never really understood that effectiveness had never been a part of Russian military tactics. They're okay with spending tens of thousands of shells, hundreds of rockets and an infinite number of people as long as the objective is met.

I have been following your podcasts regularly from South Africa. They represent the highest standards of journalism. South Africans are very divided in their attitude to the war. To demonstrate this, on the day of the invasion, the Ministor of Foreign Affairs immediately condemned the invasion and called upon the RF to withdraw its troops. She was then chastised by the smooth-talking president to adopt a more pro-Russian stance. The deputy president (a frequent visitor to Russia) wrote a rather pathetic article, supportive of Russia. The support for Russia stems from an inbuilt anti Weast sentiment with its origins in the freedom struggle combined with conflation of the Russian Federation and the Soviet Union. That Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union, seems to be lost on them. Russian propaganda is also readily swallowed as fact. South Africa trades principally with the West and to some extent with China and India. Trade with Russia is minimal. There is talk that the ruling party, the ANC receives large donations from a Russian oligarch. I am personally very grateful to Western countries for the support that is being given to Ukraine. A Russian defeat is the only thing that will bring peace.

Some years ago I interviewed a survivor of the Japanese occupation of Malaya. He recounted to me how a respected local businessman in the pre-war period, the Japanese owner of the local photography and chemist shop, after the Japanese army arrived, surprised everyone by suddenly appearing in a Japanese Army colonel's uniform. He was then instrumental in organising some of the more brutal aspects of the occupation, including execution of more prominent members of the community. Seems a similar 'sleeper' strategy has been used by ruzz in Ukraine to prepare the ground and undermine resistance.

If an Ukrainian post war AAR is conducted as NATO countries Commands always do, this is my input would say: 1-Ukraine maintained an open border of trade with Russia after 2014. This was a mistake. A barrier border should have immediately been created along the whole frontier. All road and railway border crossings should have been destroyed after 2014. Troyitske was one such key railway crossing point which should have been destroyed. War was not treated as war. 2-Crimea annexation should have caused Ukraine to set up barriers and trench defense lines on the Crimea-Kherson Oblast border. 3-Kherson City should have had a leader from Central Command oversea local Command defense of the 3 bridges crossing the Dnipro River. These bridges have to be rebuilt as drawbridges. 4-President Zelinsky and military/civilian patriotism combined with manpads and a reorganized (NCO) military won the early war. After Russia redeployed its military to eastern Ukraine, it was HIMARS that changed Ukraine from a defense to Offense military. 5-The Ukrainian Military deception plan for the Kharkviv Offensive was brilliant. Having patriots and equipment needs good to great leadership to consistently win battles. Ukraine has this leadership. 6-Ukrainian military leadership is also audacious. They found a way to sink the Russian flagship Moskva.They found a way to attack Crimean airfields. They found a way to attack the Kerch Bridge in a way knock out both the roadway and the train bridge next to it. They found a way to use sea drones to attack Russian ships in Sevastopol Harbor. Finally, they repurposed jet drones to attack multiple military airfields deep inside Russia. 7-The Ukrainian surprises for Putin’s Russia War On Ukraine are not yet over!!!

I served for 27 years in the US Army both active and in the Reserve forces as an instructor much of the training involved how to kill Russian armor units fast and efficiently if they came through the Fulda gap. "The Russian Federation Armed Forces continue the special military operation. On Friday, 16 December, Ukraine's military command, defence and industrial complex systems and the energy facilities supporting them were hit with a massive strike by long-range, airborne and sea-based precision weapons. The purpose of the strike has been achieved. All the assigned targets have been neutralised. The strike prevented the transfer of foreign-made weapons and ammunition, blocked the movement of reserves to combat areas, and halted Ukraine's defence enterprises producing and repairing weapons, military equipment and ammunition. In the course of repelling the strike by Ukrainian and Western air defence systems, a significant resource was expended on deliberately launched decoys. At the same time, four radar stations of Ukrainian S-300 air defence systems in the settlements of Andrusovka and Pridneprovskoye (Dnepropetrovsk region), as well as Novotavricheskaya and Nikolay-Pole (Zaporozhye region), have been revealed and destroyed. As a result of the unprofessional actions of Ukrainian air defence units, civilian infrastructure on the ground has been damaged. In Kupyansk direction, fire was directed at Ukrainian military units in the settlements of Petropavlovka and Timkovka (Kharkov region). Up to 40 Ukrainian servicemen, seven armoured fighting vehicles, and four cars were destroyed. In Krasny Liman direction, the Russian troops carried out a preemptive attack on the enemy reserves near Kolodezi (Donetsk People's Republic). Up to 30 Ukrainian servicemen were killed and wounded, two armoured combat vehicles and two pickup trucks were neutralised. In Donetsk direction, the Russian troops carried out an offensive which resulted in gaining favourable lines and new positions. AFU units made unsuccessful attempts to counterattack Russian units close to Bakhmutskoye and Opytnoye (Donetsk People's Republic). The enemy was stopped and dispersed by artillery and assault groups. More than 30 Ukrainian servicemen were killed, as well as seven vehicles were annihilated. In South Donetsk direction, up to 35 Ukrainian servicemen and two armoured personnel carriers were destroyed during the day by active actions of Russian troops and artillery fire. Moreover, two AFU sabotage and reconnaissance groups were discovered and destroyed near Novomayorskoye and Shevchenko (Donetsk People's Republic). Operational-Tactical aviation, Missile Troops and Artillery hit a temporary deployment point of the 14th Mechanised Brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine near the city of Kupyansk (Kharkov region), as well as 53 artillery units at firing positions, manpower and military hardware in 89 areas. A temporary location of foreign mercenaries were hit close to Krasny Liman (Donetsk People's Republic). Two Ukrainian unmanned aerial vehicles were shot down by anti-aircraft defence forces near Zaliman (Lugansk People's Republic). In addition, three Uragan MLRS rockets were intercepted near Tokmak (Zaporozhye region) and four HIMARS MLRS shells near Rozovka and Baranikovka (Lugansk People's Republic). In total, 344 airplanes and 184 helicopters, 2,675 unmanned aerial vehicles, 398 air defence missile systems, 7,140 tanks and other armoured combat vehicles, 931 combat vehicles equipped with MLRS, 3,691 field artillery cannons and mortars, as well as 7,638 units of special military equipment have been destroyed during the special military operation." Has Ukraine built at least a temporary BARRIER border along the Ukraine-RussIa border in Kviv Oblast and Kharkviv Oblast? If not, why is there no layers of wire, minefields, and anti-armor traps where roads and railways were destroyed?
@nian60

Good question. There hasn't been much info about this from what I have seen. Ukraine has fortified their border against Belarus. But as for the free bit of the northern border against Orcland, I don't know.

I believe very many heavily fortified pill boxes and extensive mine fields. Still standing bridges and culverts under Ukrainian control have all had demolition charges set.

@@nian60 Fortified? Ukraine stationed troops. The Russians have crossed the border in Kharkiv Oblast north of Kharkiv City has been crossed 3X since September. Why did these Russians not hit layers of barbed wire and a minefield? Why were they not picked up by cameras or sensors?

1: The border is loooong. 2: They are fighting a war. No time to or even sense in duck bullets while setting up a barrier.

@@jimgraham6722 Not a single dirt road let alone a major hardball road should cross the Ukrainian-Russian border. All should be destroyed, dug up. The hardball roads should have anti-armor traps up to 1000M on both sides. If a probable axis of advance, manned fighting positions with tanks, small artillery, or manpads are required. Railways crossing the Ukrainian-Russian border should be destroyed up to 25K. The roadbeds can be combined with destroyed hardball and anti-armor traps to build the required fighting positions. I counted 19 major roads and railways cross the Ukrainian-Russian border. These are priority 1 in securing the border. As more of the Ukrainian border is reestablished, this barrier border security has to be extended.
