Thank you so much for this! I've been trying to combine 3-4 actives (salicylic acid, lactic acid, niacinamide, retinol) and I've been asking everyone on the internet what the proper layering would be to avoid ruining my skin and no one has been able to help. With this video I learned that I CANNOT AT ALL use all of those actives in the same routine. Thank you for all of your help!

I get the best results combing retinol and Lactic acid…I’m in my mid 40’s with zero lines. Different skin types get different results, it’s not for everyone. I’m also an esthetician of 24 years and I’ve been my own Guinea pig, lots of trial an error. Skin care today has evolved and nothing compared to how it was when I first graduated. Glad to see great knowledgeable videos like this.

You can use this treatment ongoing (the whole year) if you need it. Generally, the frequency needs to be adjusted accordingly to your skin tolerance or skin needs. Between 5-8 drops should be enough for your entire face and neck; just test it and do not overdo it. You can use Vitamin C in the same routine if your skin is not sensitive and if you have a Vitamin C derivative. However, if you have a Vitamin C serum with pure Ascorbic Acid, I recommend not using it.

Hey Melissa ! Thank you for such informative video once again . I want to ask you about my skin issue. I moved from a topical country to Canada ,Since I landed here my skin starting breaking out. Although break out is being controlled with switching to actually non-acne prone skin cleanser and ordinary zinc solution on and off,but the marks are not fading away its been 4 months now. Any recommendation ? I have incorporated ordinary retinol / LACTIC acid in skin care as well. I did not find good vitamin c earlier so for almost 6 months I did not use one but started now.

Hey! :) Have a look at Paula's Choice Vitamin C Booster, or Dear Klairs Vitamin C Drop or Revolutions Vitamin C serum. Those all use Ascorbic Acid (pure Vitamin C) and are all excellent Vitamin C serums which can help to even out your skin tone. However, when using a Vitamin C serum with Ascorbic Acid, please do not use them in the same routine when using The Ordinary Niacinamide. Keep them separate! :)

Hi Melissa, I would like to start usibg lactic acid. I was using glycolic acid so want to switch to something mild for my KP alongside the nose. I have a lot of blackheads too. I just purchased gow receipe bha pha pore tight toner. Can i use lactic acid on the rest on my face and on my KP and bha/pha just on my nose? Also, can these go with TO resveratrol?
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet Жыл бұрын
Well, honestly, for blackheads, it is best to extract them using a tool or visit an esthetician who can do it for you. You may need to redo the extraction once they come back. However, in the meantime, you could use certain products. The best option would be to use a product containing Salicylic Acid. Yes, you can use these products individually on different areas of your face. They can also work well when combined with resveratrol and ferulic acid.

Do you not bother with a toner then, I'm just about to start on lactic acid..I use some salicylic aswell and azelaic when I get some more although no results after first bottol. Anyway is a toner is not so important with a mild gentle cleanser? And then lactic acid..Also love your blue hair have your tried any of the ordinary or inkey list haircare on your coloured hair.

@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDietits quite the list. I have been struggling since early 20s. Acne. Was on Roccitain..worked a bit but was left very sensitive and irritated after it and thread veins. I was sensitive to foods and mineral oils/petroleum in products but took a while for me to realise and it was in nearly everything. So still 20 year later. Combination oily T zone, spot prone and some congestion Redness,,texture/closed bumps esp chin and fine lines mostly around the eyes I would like to improve.I didn't really wear sunscreen except very hot as it at least temporarily helped blend my skin tone to all same colour and gave some confidence. So at the mo I'm using salicylic acid cleaner or Elave cream cleanser. Serums are. Either buffet and niacinamide or salicylic and niacinamide. Will get more azelaic and order some Retinal. At the moment ordinary moisturising factors (will get some rosehipseed oil)and an aloe vera suncream This routine is just a couple of months old. It's hard to know which concern to target. I would try lazer for threadveins again if everything else is improving, I was burnt from it before in the early days of it. I then use a Anti redness formula factor 50 most days to blend skin tone. So I guess my question is around a toner and Lactic acid in a complicated (for me ) routine. Phew! Hope that isn't too much and set out clear enough ❤

@@debee1544 Ok. So, were you using Salicylic Acid for your acne/closed comedones? I'm not sure if using an AHA (Glycolic Acid or Lactic Acid) is the best option if you already have redness-prone skin. Mandelic Acid may be different. However, usually Salicylic Acid and/or Azelaic Acid should help to reduce it. Still, I think that it's best to get them treated by laser or so if your veins are creating redness and not sensitive skin or rosacea. Otherwise, look into Centella or Oat-infused skincare products. Have you ever drier Differin Gel (Adapalene) and/or Benzoyl Peroxide for your acne?

Niacinamide helps a.bit with colour both are helping with reducing spots fast and probably helping stop future spots and I'm.not sure if Buffet is doing anything. I'm prob a bit on the dehydrated side and not seeing any benifit. Yes iv heard of centella and want to try, maybe in a toner be good? and I think your right il start a bit gentler with the Mandelic acid and see how I go. Hi Melissa! I am currently building a skincare routine for my mother that targets HYPERPIGMENTATION due to UV rays, acne and dark spots and oily skin. I would really like your opinion on what Ive come up with so far! AM routine Cleanser = CeraVe SA Serums = TO alpha arbutin 2%, TO niacinamide 10% + zinc 2% Moisturizer = CeraVe moisturizing cream Sunscreen = 3W clinic SPF 50 +an additional spot corrector by the inkey list PM routine Cleanser = CeraVe foaming facial cleanser Serum = TO lactic acid 5% +HA and TO alpha arbutin 2% +HA Suspension = TO Azelaic acid suspension 10% Moisturizer =CeraVe moisturizing cream +additional spot corrector by the inkey list What do you think?
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet 2 жыл бұрын
Hello 😀 I think she needs a retinoid or retinol to see some improvements. AM Routine Cleanser = CeraVe SA Serums = TO alpha arbutin 2%, TO niacinamide 10% + zinc 2% Moisturizer = CeraVe moisturizing cream Sunscreen = 3W clinic SPF 50 PM Routine 1 Cleanser = CeraVe foaming facial cleanser Serum = TO lactic acid 5% +HA and TO alpha arbutin 2% +HA (Optional CeraVe moisturizing cream) Try it first without. Sometimes Their suspension and moisturizer do not work well together. And the suspension is generally the last step, but try both ways. Suspension = TO Azelaic acid suspension 10% PM Routine 2 Cleanser = CeraVe foaming facial cleanser Retinol = Paula's Choice 0,3% Retinol + 2% Bakuchiol or their clinical 1% retinol treatment (be careful it is very potent!) Moisturizer =CeraVe moisturizing cream Some people in the skincare community said that for them, Azelaic Acid 20% or tretinoin and hydroquinone worked best. Still, these treatments are only available in the pharmacy or from a doctor as a prescription. So if the routine above does not show improvements after 2-3 months, I suggest asking your local doctor or in your pharmacy for more advice.

Hey Melissa, thank you so much for such an informative video. I have a quick question. I am using "The Ordinary Lactic acid 10% +HA". Since it says one shouldn't use HA in dry face. So is it that I have to use "this Lactic acid 10% +HA" on damp face ??? (i do not use toner)
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet

You can use Hyaluronic Acid on dry skin. There is a misconception that patting the skin dry immediately means that your skin is dry when in fact, it still remains damp for at least a few minutes. So, wash your face - pat the skin dry, apply Lactic Acid, and then use Hyaluronic Acid.

Hey :) How often do you us Lactic Acid during the week? You may be able to use LRP serum in your AM routine after Niacinamide but before your SPF and still keep on using your usual PM routine. Or replace Lactic Acid with the LRP serum. This depends on what your skin can tolerate. Also, keep in mind that you may need to use it in the beginning only a few times per week (2-3 times per week) before you can use it more often since your skin needs to build up the tolerance for it :)

Do you experience any irritation? If not, you may need to increase the frequency to every other day to see results. Since I think using it only twice a week is not enough. PM (every other day): Cleanse your face thoroughly with a mild cleanser and pat dry. Wait for at least 5-10 minutes until your skin is dry. Apply a pea-sized amount of tretinoin cream or gel to your fingertips and spread a thin layer evenly over your face, avoiding the eye area, lips, and nostrils. Wait 10-15 minutes before applying moisturizer Also use sunscreen daily during the day as tretinoin can increase the skin's sensitivity to the sun. Am: Cereve cleanser /ceraphyl Sunscreen (ideally a mineral SPF, but you need to look for a formulation that suits your skin, I like COSRX Aloe Soothing Sun Cream and NIOD Survival 30) You generally do not need to use the other products you have. The tretinoin when used correctly should show results after a few months.

Hey, well, I am not sure if this is going to help you. I know most products are promoted in the wrong way online😞 The ordinary says the following: "Unfortunately, none of the Ordinary products can be considered medical treatments for melasma; you may wish to discuss suitable treatments for persistent signs of melasma with your physician or dermatologist." However you can try it, you can use the products in the following order: PM: Lactic Acid Alpha Arbutin Azelaic Acid Make sure to wear sunscreen during the day! When using Lactic Acid, it can lead to stinging or burning if that happens, reduce the frequency. If you feel that it is drying, add a moisturizer. It depends on the Glycolic Acid cleanser you have; if you have high strength (over 5%), my advice would be not to use it with Lactic Acid, especially if you plan to do it daily. And you can layer the products immediately after another there is no need to wait long in between. Maybe 30 seconds to a minute so that it can absorb into the skin.

@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet 2 жыл бұрын
Hey! :) There are many peptides that can be used in skincare products. So, not all peptides are sensitive to exfoliating acids. However, The Ordinary specifically recommends keeping their Peptide serums separate from exfoliating acids as it can influence their efficacy of them. So, don't worry about your moisturiser, you can keep on using that one.

Hello Sanne, You can if this is working for you, just go for it. But generally speaking, people tend to mix a lot of acids, so they get skin irritation. Based on my comment section, people tend to use it just because they saw it on TikTok, Instagram, etc. but they do not really have skin concerns, but just want to look like the filtered person showing it. But again if that is working for you, just do it. If you experience irritation, this may be the issue ;) This is only a guide and should help you to reduce the irritation.

I think my skin is AHA sensitive 🙂 so should I try it or avoid it??? I do use prescribed tretinoin (0.05%) once a week.

@@zahraalamliya6461 Generally, when using Retinoids, you should avoid AHA and BHA. But since you do not use it that often it may work well. But my suggestion would be to use the tretinoin more often. Or do you have sensitive skin, and what does your doctor say? 🤔

@@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet My doctor prescribed me tretinoin for 6 months as I had very bad acne. But, now my skin is clear ( very oily and a bit dull) and that's why I use BHA as I'm not using tretinoin like before. I use tretinoin once a week just as an anti aging agent. Facewash : Cerave Moisturiser : Cerave Oil cleanser : The body shop chamomile Sunscreen : Nivea super sun gel Tretinoin : Every friday Paulas choice BHA : Every monday This is my everyday routine. I don’t really have sensitive skin but my skin cannot tolerate glycolic acid. I've tried several times. So I'm seeking for suggestion from you wether to add Lactic acid or not? 🥺
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet 3 жыл бұрын
@@zahraalamliya6461 Okay, well, lactic acid is very similar to Glycolic Acid, the molecules are a bit larger, so they penetrate slower into the skin. But I think it isn't that much. So probably Mandelic Acid would be the better option for you. But you can only figure it out when testing it ;)

You can start with Retinol and use it every other day and see how your skin reacts to it before using it more often. Maybe give it a month before including Lactic Acid to your routine as well! However, depending on your skin, you can use Lactic Acid 2x per week and use your Retinol on other days (every other day). Have a look at the video below: How To Use The Ordinary Retinol: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jV7WmouYp6ybrpI Hope this helps :)

No, because it is sensitive to the pH. So use exfoliating acids and Peptides from The Ordinary at different times. For example, your Peptides in the morning and the exfoliate(Lactic Acid) in the evening

If you like your current skincare routine and you like the cleanser, then there is no need to use Lactic Acid. However, if you want to use Lactic Acid, I recommend using a gentle cleanser (non SA cleanser) before using Lactic Acid.

Hey! I’m looking for some help here - I accidentally mixed Green Cleans Deep Sweep Toner (BHA/Salicylic Acid) with Lactic Acid 10% I think I used too much product as well. It started to burn so after about 15 min I rinsed it off with water and a washcloth and added more lactic acid with niacinamide and then a moisturizer. 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m not sure what I was thinking. Now I have slightly red face with some slight welts. Please help lol

Hey! :) I recommend taking a break from exfoliating acids and niacinamide. Once your skin has calmed down, do a patch-test of all the treatments (one after the other) before applying it all over your face to see if sensitivity occurs. Especially if it's the first time that you are using exfoliating acids.

@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet 3 жыл бұрын
@@yarosh1821 The main issue with acid and vitamin c is that vitamin c is better absorbed at a low pH. But also, this increases the change of irritation. If you increase the % it can lead to more irritation. So, therefore, it is not recommended to do this. But with your sunscreen, it won't matter. But also you should use your Lactic Acid ideally in the evening. And in the evening you do not need sunscreen since there is no sun. 🙂

Thank you so much for this!!! I've been using Lactic acid in the evening, but have been wondering if Amino acid is safe to use in the morning? I do the peeling solution once a week, so on the day I do this, I shouldn't use the lactic acid......am I ok to use the lactic acid the very next day?
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet
@MelissaVanDijkTheSkinDiet 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can use Amino Acids; they do not exfoliate the skin but hydrate it and helps it to heal. Technically you can use it the day after the peeling solution, but how often you use an AHA (Lactic Acid, Glycolic Acid) product will depend on your personal tolerance for these products.
