Too deep for me, but looks interesting! Josh McDowell''s book Evidence That Demands a Verdict was my first entry into studying that type of material.

I do think FF Bruce is a highly intelligent person and writer and i wish he were still around to answer one question i have had for a while that no one seems to want to answer for me. Maybe, sir, you or one of your followers would like to. In Bruce’s books he does elude to the early councils of Hippo and Carthage in the late 4th century but i think he does not give these councils credit for having much to do with the canon of the 27 books of the NT. With the overwhelming evidence of the early church fathers not agreeing on the 27 books with the exception of Athanasius, and maybe one other, well into the 4th century. My question is - what was the purpose of those early councils? Why were those councils relevant or held at all if there was no need in them? It seems, given the facts that there was more than just a couple that didnt agree on the 27 books that there was need in the church to make a declaration of not only the 27 books but the many other books being considered inspired. Peace!!!

One kind of hidden fact of history is that there were several councils held that are rarely mentioned. The basic conservative view is that the canon was settled in the 1st century. These councils just confirmed what was already done. And the few writings we have of that time are scant evidence of the totality of the situation. God bless you!

@@NewLifeOfAlbanyGa i understand and have heard this many times. But saying the canon was settled in the 1st century and showing that it was is 2 different things. The fact that Athanasius coming up with the proto canon not until 367 should tell us something, right? And that he was the only one. To say that “it was settled in the 1st century” is what i am actually looking for evidence for. Something that will override the evidence to the contrary that show that centuries later there was no settled canon. Just look at the would-be canon’s of the early fathers of the times. The evidence show quite the opposite that it was GROWING and confusing. Hence- the councils and clarification. Peace!!!

@@srich7503 I’ve got another video in the pipeline attempting to show it was settled very early. I’ve got a couple on the channel already. God bless you friend.

@@NewLifeOfAlbanyGa then i suppose my question stands unanswered - what was the purpose of those early councils?

@@srich7503 You have to realize that there was a huge variety among Christian beliefs in those days. So a few people who believed relatively the same thing would get together to discuss questions. But a great number of professing Christians were left out of those discussions.
