There are very few songs that bring up emotion in me like this one. I can never get through this song with dry eyes. I hate war and violence, and wish we could all figure out how to peacefully co-exist on this tiny pale blue dot in a vast universe.

I hate war too. I like learning about the world and we are so similar yet we don’t care about each other. When I was younger I used to watch videos about the international space station and I felt happy that all the countries were working together. And now I see a division. It might sound far fetched but I hope one day there will be a United Earth.

If memory serves, the version in the film was done by Jinx Dawson of the band Coven. Although it was actually session players that cut the soundtrack version, when it started to gain traction on American radio they released it as a single credited to the band Coven. It's possible that they had no idea that the film version would take off the way it did. Just to be clear, I prefer The Original Caste version ✌️🤘🙂 By the way, if you haven't already seen it, I highly recommend the "prequel" to the Billy Jack saga, "Born Losers". That one is not as well known generally, but Billy Jack fans seem to be familiar with it.

This is the original, but I first heard the cover by Coven when I saw the movie Billy Jack in the theater when I was 11 years old. The movie and song left me gob smacked, and while I held it together on the ride home, I immediately went to my bedroom and cried for a solid hour. Yeah, I was a gullible, easily influenced pre-teen in '71. Truth be told, this 62 year old US liberal still feels the same way.

I believe they are commenting on the wars that have been waged through the centuries on our neighbors and countries to get what they have whether it be treasures or lands. Many times in the name of God and Religion and that God himself is not having any of it on Judgement Day. They are saying go ahead , but do not expect God to reward you for it.

I saw the movie Billy Jack for the first time when I was 7 years old, my brother-in-law to all of us children to see it. My sister was 15 and since she was going I wanted to go too. I didn't understand it at that age and was in awe of the fight scenes as I had never really seen fighting like that before. Since then I have watched it every chance I get. When I was old enough to understand it, I realized what an awesome and profound movie it was.

In about 1977 I moved from Texas to Florida at the age of 17. I went to work at a gas station in Central Florida. My boss told me a story that he had written the lyrics for this song (One Tin Soldier). He said he mailed them in to a contest, but never heard back from the contest reps. The next thing he knew, the movie Billy Jack came out and this song became a radio hit. His story is probably not true, but I remember the story every time I hear this song...

I think of the lines "Go ahead and cheat your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend, do it in the name of heaven, you can justify it in the end" as sort of sarcastic. Like you can tell yourself you are doing what you need to do, or are order to do as a soldier can be, and find someway to justify your actions to yourself, but the real treasure is Peace On Earth, not gold or fame, and people need to stop letting themselves be motivated by greed. The song also says "there won't be any trumpets blowing, come the judgement day" which means that as much as they may try to justify their actions it won't get them into heaven, which is often the ultimate goal, the treasure of the mountain people was peace on earth, which is the true way to heaven. So by justifying their actions to get what they wanted they lost out on the ultimate prize, Peace on Earth.
