Consider the 'Method of 16' or 16 Bead Method for casting hexagrams. It has the benefit of having identical mathematical probabilities as the traditional yarrow stalk method, but with the convenience of the 3 Coin toss. You can use a small bowl or bag to contain the beads (or marbles; any identically shaped small objects), or you can even shake the beads in your enclosed palms to pick out a random bead corresponding to one of the four lines. You can also create a 16 bead bracelet so you don't have to worry about losing or dropping any of the beads, so long as the beads can move freely along the bracelet. I've used this method exclusively for over 20 years and love it.

I've never seriously thought that I could learn the deeper sciences of divination, up until I found this post. I got my I Ching book earlier this week, and I think that I can have some fun with this :-)

I have the Bollingen version of the I Ching, Wilhelm's translation. The version you review here is quite interesting! I didn't know about the composition of the Man in the High Castle. Just finished Valis, getting ready to start on the second book in the trilogy. Also just got a copy of and started reading Atalanta Fugiens by Michael Maier. I wasn't looking for the book - I have never been called to study hermetic treatises - but someone saw it for sale and recommended it to me. Not one to turn down the Universe, I bought it. =) Hope you have a lovely holiday, with lots of interesting discoveries and happy synchronicities!

@@FoolishFishBooks I can see where the 2nd and 3rd novels echo the first but they read more like exposition hung on a fictional frame. Feels a bit like a lecture on gnostic thought. I have decided to get a copy of this version of the I Ching, based on your review, so thanks for that! Atalanta Fugiens is a slow read so far, though bear in mind I usually have several books going at one time. Working my way through the introduction and such. Been a very long time since my music theory days and that is discussed at length. Haven't gotten to the actual text yet. Will let you know what I think of it. Hope you and yours are doing well!

Did you have a chance to check out the correspondences in the back of the book? I just got done watching your review of the Complete Magician's Tables by Dr Skinner so I wonder if the correspondences in the back of this I Ching book correlate to those in Dr Skinner's book?

I've had a chance to review this version of the I Ching and I have to say, the correspondences are somewhat different from how I learned them with the Visual I Ching (ages ago). For example, the Heaven card is considered yang in that system, where it's yin in this book! Makes for a very different outcome depending on which book is used. When you've worked with a certain correspondence for some time, it's strange to change it. Thank you for the info! There really is a lot of data in the Eranos edition - very absorbing. It says the ORIGINAL translation but the names of the trigrams are completely different to the Chinese names. For example, mountain, lake, wind, etc. Why is this?
